There are plenty of web services around which can try to help you find a stolen computer. Usually this involves equipping your system with a small agent of some kind, which then uses the system IP address, wifi connections and more to determine its current location, before communicating this to a central server. If you'd like something more lightweight, though, there are a few simple free tools around which you might like to try. IPFetcher, for instance, won't grab images from your webcam, and can't lock down your system remotely. But it can retrieve a system's IP address, then email or upload it to an FTP server, and that's more than enough to be useful. The program arrives as a compact (1.2MB) download. Unzip this, install the two components included (IPFetcher.msi and IMFetcherBackend.msi) and reboot your PC. Launch IPFetcher from the Softraven section of the Start menu, and click either "Set FTP" or "Set Mail", depending on which method you'd like to use. In both cases you'll need to complete a form with your server names, account details and so on. Setting up the program is awkward - but you only have to do it once The "Set Mail" page includes a "Test Mail" button, which in theory should send a test message to confirm your settings are correct. But in practice this didn't work for us. If we tried it, the program interface would first stop responding for a while, before displaying a horribly technical .NET error message (even though we'd entered the right information). There are other setup problems, too. Once you've completed the form you'll probably click "Save", but this just displays a less than clear error message. You'll have to click "Set interval and log" and set both the "Reset log count" and "Repeat hours" (how often the location will be sent) values; "200″ and "24 hours" will be fine for now. We would manually start the service, too, just in case (click Service Settings > "Click to manually start Service"). Finally, enter a password in the box, click Save and reboot your PC. If this sounds all a little irritating, then it certainly was. But if you're interested in the idea, don't let it put you off. Once we were past the clumsy setup process we found IPFetcher worked very well, correctly retrieving our external IP address and emailing or uploading it as we'd specified. And there's no further maintenance required, unless you change your email account or FTP server, anyway - it just works.

If you are using, or have ever used, a multi-monitor computer, you’ll know just how useful a setup it can be. Have the extra space afforded you by double the usual number of monitor enables you to see more at once, work more quickly and be more productive – but it can also be expensive and requires you to have a desk large enough to hold two monitors comfortably. If you have a mobile device, however, you can use iDisplay to gain an extra monitor from your existing hardware. The name of the software might imply that this is something that will only be of interest to Apple hardware owners, but in fact it can be used in conjunction with an iOS or Android phone or tablet. Your mobile device does no need to be physically connected to your computer – the desktop version of the client software is available for both Mac and PC – which opens up new opportunities. iDisplay This is an app that would seem to be more useful for tablet owners, particularly when used in conjunction with a vertical stand, but there is a also great scope for using with a phone. While the smaller screen of a phone means that you’re unlikely to want to use it to display complex spreadsheets from your desktop computer, it can be used to house program panels and controls to help free up space – for example, in an image editor, you could move some of the controls to your phone’s screen to gain a larger work area on your monitor. If you ever find yourself needing to give a presentation, iDisplay can also be used in mirror mode. This means that you can share the display of your PC or Mac with a number of iOS or Android devices so your audience can get a great view of whatever you are doing. When used In regular mode, you can easily switch between portrait and landscspe mode, and app can bemoved between displays with a quick shortcut. You can find out more by paying a visit to the iDisplay review pages – iDisplay for PC, iDisplay for Mac, iDisplay for iOS and iDisplay for Android.

Oracle has issued an emergency fix for its cross-platform Java software. Java 7 update 11 for Windows, Mac and Linux, and Java 7 Update 11 64-bit for 64-bit versions of Windows and Linux, aims to plug a number of alarming security holes that were being used for phishing attacks and other crimeware. While update 11 should be considered an essential update for all Java users, researchers have warned that the new build is little more than a sticking plaster for the problem, and recommend users actually disable Java from running inside web browsers. Update 11 specifically acts on a Java exploit in web browsers that the US Department of Homeland Security warned is being “actively exploited” by malware. This allows code to be executed outside of Java’s sandbox, allowing keyloggers and botnet code to be distributed through the Java exploit. Check your browser's add-ons or extensions menu should you wish to disable Java. The update basically sets Java’s default security settings to “High”, which means all code from unknown sources will be flagged before running on the user’s say-so. Researchers warn that despite this new setting, the security can be bypassed by hackers able to mask their code through “social engineering”, which allows them to mask its true origins and claim to be from a trusted source, encouraging users to accept the code even though it’s been flagged. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team has recommended users should actually disable Java from running in web browsers – even after applying the latest update. The warning is echoed by other experts, including Rapid 7 and Polish company Security Explorations. At the present time, Mac OS X disables Java browser plug-ins by default, while Firefox has implemented click-to-play protection on recent updates (but not for this newer build). Users of other web browsers and OSes should check their browser’s add-on settings and – if wishing to follow the recommended advice – disable Java manually. In the meantime, Java 7 Update 11 32-bit and Java 7 Update 11 64-bit are both available as free downloads for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Berlin developer O&O Software has released a brand new version of its drive-imaging and backup tool. O&O DiskImage 7 Professional 32-bit, also available as a 64-bit build, adds full support for Windows 8 and EFI/UEFI systems. Version 7 also allows users to create an emergency boot CD from directly within the program itself, plus debuts a streamlined interface designed to appeal to less experienced users. It’s also now capable of adapting to third-party energy saving settings, ensuring disk images aren’t compromised. The latest build debuts a simplified and streamlined user interface, headed by a dashboard-like start screen that provides a clear indication of which drives and partitions have been backed up by the tool. Users can then back up all outstanding partitions via a single button, or access the tool’s other backup and restore options. The new build debuts a redesigned user interface, which aims to make the tool more accessible. The redesign goes further, logically grouping together related tools such as options for creating backup jobs as well as backing up immediately. Previously these were found in separate parts of the program. O&O DiskImage 7 Professional also integrates the tool for creating a boot CD or USB thumb drive directly into the application itself as opposed to leading users to a separate download over the internet. It also adds capabilities allowing it to adapt to third-party energy settings, ensuring imaging operations don’t fail due to energy saving schemes set by other programs. Version 7 also updates its standards, adding full support for Windows 8 – already present in version 6.80 and later – as well as newer EFI/UEFI systems. This is in addition to continued support for traditional BIOS-based systems. O&O DiskImage 7 Professional 32-bit and O&O DiskImage 7 Professional 64-bit are both available as free 30-day trial downloads for PCs running Windows XP or later. 1GB RAM is recommended, and the full version can be purchased now for a special launch price of $23.96 - 25 per cent off the MSRP - through the Downloadcrew Software Store.

Internet Explorer's security zones provide support for more than 70 key settings, which gives you very fine control over what websites can and can't do on your system. These settings are spread around several dialogs, though, and it can be difficult to get a feel for your current configuration, or spot any problems - unless you get a little help from IEZoneAnalyzer 3. If you'd like an overview of your current security settings, for instance, don't waste time browsing around the Tools > Internet Options dialog. Just launch IEZoneAnalyzer, choose "Internet" in the Security Zone box, click View Effective Settings, and the program will display your configuration in a single dialog. This includes the source of each setting, so you'll know if a particular restriction was applied by your preferences, machine preferences or Group Policy. And a couple of clicks will export this data to the clipboard, a CSV file, or even directly to Excel, if you'd like to run further analysis or just save it for posterity. IEZoneAnalyzer also allows you to compare entire collections of IE security settings. If you're having IE issues on your laptop, say, but your desktop is fine, then you can use the program to save the settings from one configuration (File > Export Local Settings), compare it with the other, and highlight any differences. Alternatively, you could use the same idea to monitor changes in a single IE installation, over time. So once you've optimised your security settings, you might save these as a baseline. Then, maybe every month, you could use IEZoneAnalyzer to compare your current zone settings with that baseline, and if the settings have drifted for some reason (someone else with access to your PC has tweaked something, maybe) it'll be highlighted immediately. And the program's third option makes it easy to compare settings for particular IE Security Zones, either against each other or Microsoft's templates (the default values selected if you choose High, Medium High, Medium, Medium Low or Low security). You might think you've set up IE to have a high level of security, for instance - but is there a setting you've forgotten? To find out, you can choose the High Security template, compare it with your local settings, and the resulting report will immediately highlight any differences. IEZoneAnalyzer 3 is a useful tool for anyone who would like to better understand Internet Explorer's security settings, then. It's portable, for extra convenience, and the latest version is available now.

It's important for your PC's security to install application updates just as soon as they become available, but if a program doesn't check for these itself then that can be a challenge. Unless you have the time to monitor every application website yourself then you'll probably need some third-party help, and the latest candidate is the free and portable AutoUP. The program provides support for updating 68 applications, which isn't in itself particularly impressive, but there are at least plenty of major names in the list: Adobe AIR/ Flash/ Reader, CCleaner, Evernote, Firefox, Foxit Reader, Chrome, KeePass, Paint.NET, VLC Media Player, and more. (The full list is here). Launch AutoUP, and it'll display any supported programs it finds on your system, along with the current version number. Choose any you're particularly interested in (or right-click and select Check All to highlight everything), click Scan and you'll be quickly alerted to any updates (regular or beta) which might be available. AutoUP displays any missing updates for your installed applications with a click All you then have to do is choose any updates you'd like to install, click Download, and the program will grab the various files to the folder of your choice. Unlike the similar Patch My PC, it won't also try to install these for you, but we're not sure that really matters (personally we like to keep some control of our updates). And just in case this isn't enough functionality, click the Software tab and AutoUP will display all its supported applications, whether they're present or not. If you're setting up a new PC, say, and want to install Audacity, Blender, Defraggler or anything else on the list, simply check the relevant boxes, click Download and the program will grab the latest versions for you. We did spot a few interface quirks and other problems with AutoUP. There's no immediately obvious way to scan everything for updates when you first launch the program, for instance. Clicking the Download button opens new dialog, which then pointlessly waits until you click Download again. And once it's grabbed everything, you'd expect to be left with a "Close" option, but only the "Download" button remains (and clicking that produces an error message). So you're left to click the regular window close button in the top-right corner. Once you've learned the basics, though, none of these issues will get in the way of AutoUP's core functionality. And while we'd like it to support more applications, on balance the program remains a straightforward and very useful software update checker.
