Optimising your PC's performance can be a tricky and complex business, but the best place to start is by benchmarking its current speed, ideally with real-life tests such as the time it takes to launch some of your larger applications.
Once that's done then it's easy to measure how your system changes over time. Whether you've installed a new security suite which seems to have slowed you down, or a new defrag tool looks like it's ramped up your speeds, then you won't have to guess what's happening; just run your tests again and you'll see precisely what's going on.
Of course it's important that your benchmark is accurate, and that means hand-timing is out. It's a much better idea to use an automated tool, like the free PassMark AppTimer, which can launch an application, then measure how long it takes to appear and poll for user input. Before closing the program and repeating the procedure, just as many times as you like, for improved accuracy.
To set the program up you must first specify the application you'd like to launch, and the log file where any data will be stored. AppTimer will use this to fire up your app, and start the clock.
Next, enter a word which appears in the program window's caption bar. Normally the name of the application is enough: "Notepad", "Word", "Skype", say.
And then tell AppTimer at what point you'd like it to stop the test clock. Typically you'd check "Input Idle", "Window Name" and "Visible", which means AppTimer will wait until a window has been created with a caption containing your specified word, it's now visible, and waiting for user input. (But if that doesn't work, clear "Input Idle" and try again.)
Once the time has been recorded and logged, then AppTimer will try to close the application for you. Check Alt+F4 to have the program simulate that keypress, for instance, or try the other two options as an alternative.
Finally, enter the number of times you'd like to repeat the launch test in the Executions box (we'd opt for at least 3, and ideally 5 to be sure you're getting representative timings). And then specify the gap between each test in the Delay box, in milliseconds. By default this is only 1000 (1 second), but if it's a bulky app, like Outlook, then you may want to extend this, giving the program time to close down properly: we'd use 10000 as a minimum.
And that's it - you're finished. Now close down any other programs you have running, click Run App, and watch as AppTimer launches, closes and relaunches your test application, just as many times as you've specified. Once it's finished, open the log file to see the launch times. And if you repeat the test next week/ month/ year, or after installing an app, or running some speedup tool, you'll be able to compare these times with the original set and look for any changes.
This process has its limitations, of course; measuring application launch times will primarily just tell you about hard drive and file system performance. And after the first test, it's not even really doing that, as your application files will almost certainly be loaded from the Windows disk cache (so you may want to consider the first timing as the most important).
AppTimer has its usability issues, too. It really ought to save your chosen configuration options, for instance, so you can re-run the same tests without having to re-enter everything. And a button to display the log when the tests are complete would also be convenient.
Still, once you know what you're doing then it only takes a moment to set up the program. And then AppTimer becomes a quick and easy way to measure application launch times. Its compact site (124KB) and portability are also plus points, and on balance we think the program merits a place in your benchmarking toolkit.

Piriform Inc has released version 3.10 of CCleaner, its popular free cleaning tool for Windows-based PCs. CCleaner 3.10, which is also available as a portable version, adds support for Internet Explorer 9.0.2, Firefox 6.0 Final and Firefox 7.0 Beta.
Version 3.10 also adds a number of new and improved cleaning options, plus promises better accuracy and reliability when wiping free disk space as well as entire drives.
New cleaning options added to version 3.10 include Microsoft Search, cached fonts, SUPERAntiSpyware, Foxit Reader 5.0 and SpeedBit DAP. In addition to adding support for the aforementioned browsers, CCleaner 3.10 has also added an option for binary cookies file cleaning and management in Safari 5.1.
The program also promises improved cleaning for Opera 9’s Last Download Location feature along with Safari’s local storage, Chrome’s “Saved Form Information” and “Saved Passwords” options, plus Internet Download Accelerator. It also includes non-specified “minor optimization tweaks”.
CCleaner 3.10 is a free download for PCs running Windows XP or later. This latest release follows hot on the release of Piriform’s system information tool, Speccy, which is also for PCs running XP or later. Speccy 1.12 adds compatibility with newer NVIDIA cards, better RAID support and improved display of Operating System data, including environment variables and running processes.
A Mac version of CCleaner is currently also in development. CCleaner for Mac Beta 3 is available now as a public download for Macs running OS X Leopard (10.5) or later – as with all beta software, extreme caution should be applied before using it.

An application's move to a whole new version number is normally accompanied by much publicity, as the authors boast about the many exciting new features they've included.
Popular photo sharing package Jalbum 9.0 appears to be a rare exception, though, with the release slipping out so quietly that it didn't even rate a mention on the company blog.
And that's a pity, because while this isn't as nearly as revolutionary an update as the move to Jalbum 8.0, the latest version does include some useful enhancements that will make a real difference to anyone who uses the program.
One interesting addition is the new high resolution (2048x2048) image linking option, for instance: if your visitors want to download a printable version of your best pictures then they can now do so at a click.
When you add images to your projects then the program will now default to copying, rather than linking them. And so if you move or delete your original photos then you will no longer break an existing album.
If you've ever built a huge Jalbum project then you'll know how much work can be involved, and how annoying it is if you accidentally lose the project files. But not any more. Publish with Jalbum 9.0 and the program will by default save a lifeboat.zip that contains all your captions and program settings, so even if the worst happens you can still restore your project details in just a few moments.
Elsewhere, there are some welcome usability improvements. So when you launch the program for the first time, for instance, it won't display a sign-in window that you'll probably have to cancel: instead you're only asked to sign in when you opt for a particular online service.
And a range of under-the-hood tweaks help to enhance performance, improve reliability, and generally ensure Jalbum 9.0 is a little better than its predecessor.
It's not going to change your life, then. But Jalbum 9.0 adds welcome features to an already excellent program, and if you currently use the service then you should upgrade as soon as you can.

Taking care of your computer can easily turn into a full time job, so it makes sense to delegate at least some of the responsibility to a third party tool. Uniblue PowerSuite is an impressive collection of maintenance tools that can be used to manage the registry, keep drivers up to date, clean out junk files and much more. The latest addition to the suite is MaxiDisk, a defrag tool that makes it simple to keep your hard drive shipshape - and there are a few extra options to investigate as well.
At its heart, MaxiDisk is a fairly basic defragmentation tool, but if all you have used in the past is the one that is built into Windows, it is a great leap forward. The analysis process is completed faster than Windows’ defragmenter and you are provided with basic information about the layout of the data on your drive, along with an indication of whether or not defragging is required. The re-organization of files on your disk is something that unavoidably takes time, but it is something that is well worth doing.
Maintain the performance of your hard drive with MaxiDisk
There is also a system cleanup tool that can be used to track down junk files that can be remove as well as out of date backups that you may no longer need. The program also offers to compress the largest files on your drive to free up more space. While these are all useful options, they are somewhat oddly positioned after the defragging section in the program interface when it would make much more sense to perform these tasks first.
The final section of the program enables you to decompress any of the files you chose to compress, and it also details information about your computer – but nothing you cannot determine through the Control Panel. You also have the option of scheduling defragmentation to save you from having to do this manually. Looked at on its own, MaxiDisk is a fairly basis tool ,but when considered as a new component of a larger suite, it’s a great addition.
Whilst Uniblue release a new tool, they appear to have silently cancelled RegistryBooster, which was always one of their more controversial tools. All references to RegistryBooster has disappeared from the Uniblue website.
You can find out more and download a free trial of the program by paying a visit to the Uniblue MaxiDisk review page.

There’s little doubt that solid-state drives (SSDs) are the future for hard disk-based storage. They’re quicker, quieter and cooler than the drives we’ve come to rely on over the past few decades. But with SSDs now entering the mainstream as prices fall within the reach of consumers, there’s one potential performance hurdle to overcome.
TRIM is a command designed to fix a problem whereby over time the write performance of a SSD starts to degrade to as little as 50 per cent of its original speed. Unfortunately, TRIM isn’t supported on a lot of operating systems, and while newer drives boast their own technologies to combat this problem with relying on the OS, older drives rely on TRIM being supported. Apple plans to rectify this with the upcoming release of Mac OS X Lion (and possibly in the next update for Snow Leopard too), but there’s still no guarantee it’ll support TRIM on non-Apple SSDs. But now there’s a possible solution that’s small, free and quick. It’s called TRIM Support Enabler (UPDATE: version 1.1 has been released, and the text below has been updated to reflect this).
As things stand, TRIM support can be enabled in the latest revision of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.7), but it only works with Apple SSD drives. Most early adopters will be using third-party drives from the likes of Corsair, Kingston and Crucial, which probably explains why the Mac community has been working overtime to discover if it’s possible to add TRIM support for these drives too.
The good news is that a solution has been discovered, and – better still – TRIM Support Enabler has been developed to make it possible to switch on TRIM support for any supported SSD drive with one click and a reboot. Before performing any tweak of this nature, however, we’d strongly urge you to back up your hard drive first – just in case. Some people have reported problems after applying the update, so it pays to play it safe. Carbon Copy Cloner is our tool of choice here.
Once done, launch TRIM Support Enabler and click Backup to back up the original settings. Next, click Patch and reboot when prompted. After rebooting, click the Apple menu and select About This Mac, then click More Info to launch System Profiler. Select Serial-ATA from the left-hand menu to verify that TRIM Support is enabled (it'll say Yes if it is).
If you run into problems, reboot your Mac in Safe Mode and click the Restore button to remove the patch and return to your previous settings.
We strongly advise reading through the following forum post before attempting to apply the tweak. That's because it extensively documents the experience of various users, plus points people to an article explaining how the hack does more than simply switch a flag. The forum post is also worth checking to see if your specific model has been mentioned and if any problems were encountered using it.
Wot, no SSD?
Note: some SSDs may still report TRIM support as being disabled even after running the patch. This may indicate that the drive itself doesn’t support TRIM, but if this is the case, take a trip to the drive manufacturer’s website and look for a possible firmware update that enables TRIM support. For example, Corsair drive owners should visit the Corsair Forum for a list of compatible firmware updates. Note that updating the firmware may wipe the drive’s contents, so back up first using Carbon Copy Cloner.
One final warning: the patch is still in its infancy, and glitches and bugs are being found (and rectified) all the time. Unless you're desperate to enable TRIM support right here and now, you might be better served waiting a week or so until it's been more extensively tested and problems documented and ironed out.

Figuring out why your PC doesn't go to sleep can be a challenge, not least because there aren't usually any error messages to help. Could it be a software conflict, a hardware problem, a configuration issue? There's no way to tell.
If you've been left baffled, though, you may be able to get just a little help from PassMark Sleeper. The program has no magic solutions (this is too complex a topic for that), but it does offer some useful features which might take you a little further forward.
Sleeper is a ridiculously small download (164KB), which unzips into the folder of your choice. Close down all your other programs, launch Sleeper, and it'll immediately tell you which sleep states it thinks your system supports (S1, S2, S3 or S4; if the system doesn't support something you were expecting then that could be your problem), and whether the computer should be able to wake up after some predetermined delay.
Does sleep work in practice, though? Click "Sleep Now" and the program will try to make your system sleep for 30 seconds (at the default setting), waking it up afterwards.
Experiment with sleep options and the left-hand log records exactly what's happened
If this doesn't work at all, choose a difference sleep state in the "Suspend Types for Cycle" box and try again. You might run through S1, S2, S3 and S4, for instance, regardless of that the program says is supported.
Or maybe your sleep issues seem to be intermittent? Sleeper can run its Sleep test repeatedly. Click Configuration, enter the number of runs you'd like in the "Number of Cycles" box, and click OK. Now click "Sleep Now" again and the program will try to send your PC to sleep for a few seconds, then wake it up again, repeating the process for as many times as you've specified, and logging the results.
At the end of all this, at the very minimum, you'll have confirmation of the problem (if Sleeper can't make your system sleep, either). But the program may also have revealed useful system information (various sleep states aren't supported), and of course you might have found that your system can sleep, after all, as long as it's set to use the correct sleep state.
Sleeper's abilities don't stop there, though. Because if all you want is a shortcut you can use to make your PC sleep, then the program provides an extensive command line interface which should help. You can choose your sleep state, duration, and force the system to sleep, for instance (useful if some application is trying to block your request).
Put it all together and that's really not bad, especially for such a tiny and free (for personal use) executable. So the next time your PC has insomnia, give Sleeper a try - it's a surprisingly capable tool.

If you're looking to preserve your privacy online then there are already a host of free tools and services queuing up to offer you a new IP address, so discovering yet another, in the shape of SafeIP, didn't exactly fill us with excitement.
The program doesn't stop there, though. It also claims to block cookies, conceal your referrer and browser agent, block ads and prevent you from accessing known dangerous sites. And all for free, no adware or similar catches. Perhaps SafeIP was worth a look, after all.
Installation was straightforward. The program asked that we close any open browsers and other internet tools, but didn't force us to do that, or ask us to reboot: it just opened a small, simple console and was ready to work immediately.
SafeIP correctly displayed our current external IP address, and displayed a list of five countries where we could obtain another (the US, UK, Poland, Germany and France). And getting a new identity is just a matter of double-clicking one of these, at which point your new IP address appears in a second or two and is ready for use.
Double-click a country on the left and you'll be allocated a new IP address immediately
Does it work? It seems that way. We gave ourselves a Polish identity, for instance, and this was correctly reported at various IP-checking websites (some of which now displayed ads in Polish to reinforce the effect). Our browsing speeds were a little slower, but in general it all seemed very smooth and easy to use.
Websites can track you with more than just your IP address, of course, but clicking Settings reveals more tools to help. You're able to block the transmission of your browser user agent or web page referrers, for instance, just by checking a box or two. And SafeIP can block all cookies in much the same way.
The Settings dialog also included checkboxes for "Advertisement blocking" and "Malware protection", though, and they seemed the most intriguing. Would they offer any real protection? Well… No.
It seems all the program tries to do is add some entries to your HOSTS file; not exactly the most sophisticated of solutions. And it couldn't even do that properly on our test system, complaining that "there was a problem adding updates to your HOSTs file" when we checked the relevant boxes.
SafeIP isn't quite as advanced as its lengthy feature list might make you think, then. And if you really want to block ads or malware then we'd probably recommend you use something else.
If you just want to change your IP address occasionally, though, the program will get the job done quickly, easily, and with the minimum of hassle.
