Google Priority Inbox not good enough? Prioritize your inboxes with EmailTray

The need to prioritize emails is an idea that has been around for some time, starting with spam filtering that aimed to reduce the amount of junk reaching your inbox. Google and other email providers have made further advances by highlighting emails believe to be more important than other you receive based on content, sender and previous correspondence. EmailTray provides you with even more control by automatically filtering your mail into high priority, lower priority, no priority and spam. This is a desktop app that can be used to check as many email addresses as you want providing you are working with POP3 or IMAP accounts, but all of your email is made available in one place. The program analyzes your email message as they arrive and filter them in to inboxes of different priorities. Emails that are sent by people with whom  you regularly communicate with will be assigned a higher priority than other emails, and all of your mail is sorted into ‘Top priority’, ‘Low priority’, ‘No priority’ and Spam. EmailTray Notifications can be customized so that you are only warned about the arrival of the most important email and do not waste your time looking through unimportant messages and you can define rules of your own so that email from certain contacts or messages that include certain words are always sent to spam or prioritized as necessary. The program also checks through the spam folders of your email accounts to ensure that the spam filters of your email providers have not been too rigorous. The reduction in email notification is very welcome, and the program seems to do an excellent job of correctly determining how different emails should be dealt with. As an added bonus, EmailTray provides you with more information about anyone you receive emails from by pulling in information from their Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. The Android version of the app includes all of the features of the Windows edition of the software and is also available free of charge. You can find out more and download a copy of the app by paying a visit to the EmailTray or EmailTray for Android review pages.

Dexpot 1.6 brings interactive previews and a window catalog to your virtual desktop

Virtual desktops are a great alternative to having multiple monitors installed to gain more space to work with. Dexpot is a virtual desktop management tool and it has just been updated to include and impressive new interactive preview screen that can be used to move windows and program between desktops, and even perform more advanced options such as creating copies of windows. There’s also a portable edition of the same version of the app available Dexpot Portable. The preview window also feature support for mouse and keyboard controlled zooming, but one of the most intriguing new features is the Window catalog. This displays all of the windows that are included on a desktop as a series of tiles and if you start dragging windows around Dexpot will automatically switch to full screen preview mode. Old favorites such as the desktop manager and desktop preview have also been redesigned. Dexpot A big step forward sees the addition of support for multiple monitors. If you have two or more screens connected to your computer, you can now use Dexpot to gain even more workspace. There are advanced optoins such as the ability to exclude a particular monitor from being used by the program so you can keep content static when required. To help make virtual and real desktop easier to differentiate, you can choose to have a different background to each desktop or for the desktops of a particular monitor. In addition to all of this, there are also new keyboard shortcuts that make it easier than ever to interact with the program and access frequently used options. If you find that you use Dexpot in a number of different ways and have set up various profiles, these can now be loaded via shortcuts to allow for easy switching. New support for hot corners is another quick shortcut to accessing the features you use most. You can find out more by paying a visit to the Dexpot and Dexpot Portable review pages.

Fix an unbootable PC with Paragon Rescue Kit 10 Free

You turn your PC on, a BIOS message or two pops up, then Windows loads, and (eventually) the desktop appears. This happens automatically, every time, and so it's very easy to take the process for granted. What if the startup sequence didn't run quite so smoothly, though? An error message pops up at some point, maybe the boot just hangs altogether, and your desktop never appears.  Windows provides several options that might be able to help - Safe Mode, "Last Known Good", Startup Repair - but there's no guarantee that they'll fix the problem. And so it's important to equip yourself with tools that can see you through disasters like this, and get your system working again. No-one knows this better than Paragon Software. For years they've bundled a bootable recovery disc with their partition and hard drive software, so if you accidentally wipe something important then you have at least a chance of restoring normal operations. You don't have to buy one of Paragon's apps to benefit from this recovery tool, though, because its core functionality is available for free in the shape of their Rescue Kit. The company have just released version 10 of the system, and it's packed with essential disaster recovery functionality. The Boot Corrector, for instance, has options to fix all the most common startup problems: it can fix the Master Boot Record, examine the partition boot record, tweak the partition table and its parameters, correct boot settings in Windows structures (boot.ini, BCD), check for incorrect drive letters in the System Registry and more. And while this may sound complicated, it's really not - a helpful wizard walks you through the steps involved. You also get an Undelete Partition tool, which will scan your hard drive, searching for and restoring accidentally deleted partitions. And if these utilities can't get your PC back to normal, then the File Transfer Wizard will at least help to recover your most important documents. Just choose the files and folders you need, and the program will copy them to a local drive, ready for migrating to another PC. The Paragon Rescue Kit can't solve everything. If there's a hardware issue, say, or your PC is infected by malware then it's probably not going to be able to help. The Rescue Kit can fix the most common Windows and partition-related boot problems, though, and that's why you need a copy. Go download it now, and you'll be prepared if disaster strikes.

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 released to public beta

Bitdefender has released the first public beta of its Total Security 2013 suite. And while the "New Features" list this time doesn't exactly reveal much in the way of innovation (you'll probably have some across many similar ideas before), there are still some welcome additions to what's becoming a very powerful security suite. Safepay, for instance, is an isolated browser which runs in a secure desktop, with a virtual keyboard. It automatically launches when it detects you're visiting banking, payment or other sensitive sites to help ensure your transaction details stay safe. Anti-Theft is Bitdefender's take on a computer location service. If your laptop is stolen, say, you can log in to a web console, display its whereabouts on a map (maybe), then try to lock it remotely or wipe all the data it contains. The USB Immunizer aims to make your USB flash keys "immune to autorun malware". We've yet to test this - and most similar tools aren't quite as powerful as they claim - but any level of protection here is welcome. It takes a moment to discover where everything is, but then Total Security's new interface seems very easy to use If this kind of ultra-comprehensive suite always seems too complex, then you may appreciate Bitdefender's new Autopilot: essentially it's a "leave me alone" mode where the program doesn't hassle you with popups and alerts, instead managing your system entirely automatically. All of this is presented in a flashy new interface, which works well with a few exceptions (there's a desktop gadget which feels like a waste of time). And of course all this comes on top of the core features you'd expect from any security suite: on-demand and real-time antivirus protection, a spam filter, firewall, privacy tools, browsing protection, online backup, file encryption and more. Is it worth taking the trial for a spin? If you're interested in Bitdefender in particular, or this kind of do-everything suite, then we'd say yes: there are bugs and omissions, but in the main it seemed fairly stable and reliable during our tests. And by way of encouragement, Bitdefender are offering a few prizes to the beta testers who provide the most feedback. You could win an Asus B121 12.1 inch Tablet, an Acer Aspire S3 13.3 inch Ultrabook, a Nokia Lumia 900, and 100x Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 licenses for 6 months. One point to remember, though, is that Bitdefender Total Security 2013 really isn't designed to run alongside other security suites. These will generally be detected at installation, with the program refusing to proceed until your existing solution has been removed. And keep in mind also that this is a first public beta. And bugs in this kind of low-level application could have very serious effects on your system, so don't even think of installing the suite on a PC unless you have a full and recent backup available. But if that's not a problem, then grab a copy of the beta and take a look for yourself: there are 32-bit and 64-bit flavours available.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 and Internet Security 2014 betas now available

Kaspersky Lab has announced the public availability of Technical Previews for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. These are very early releases and some way from being complete, so there's little information on new features yet - but a few basic details have appeared. The interface has been updated, for instance. It's not radically different, just simplified, and even more Windows 8-like than it was before. The new releases now support touch screens, too, and our initial impressions are that the program could work well in a touch environment. Kaspersky's Safe Money (a feature which helps to secure your online transactions) now supports more banks and web stores, and allows you to choose your preferred browser. The interface has been simplified, and is more Windows 8-like than ever The company claims the new release will use less resources. And apparently it will also provide "connected standby technology support", although what level of support, and where, isn't yet clear. This doesn't look like a release which is going to win over many new customers, then, but if you're a Kaspersky fan and want to try it anyway, the process is at least fairly straightforward. There's no special beta registration, and you don't have to sign up to anything: just download the installer and you're ready to go. (Although we would recommend removing any existing Kaspersky installation, first, and running a backup if the system contains anything important.) And to find out what might happen then, we've briefly installed and tried out both programs, with mixed results. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 displayed error messages saying our system wasn't activated, for instance, while the interface said we were, while Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 noticeably cut our test PC's performance. But scanning and other features worked well, if a little slower. So on balance, not bad for an early beta, and if you're interested in Kaspersky products then you should find there's plenty here to explore.

VLC 2.0.1 FINAL tweaks interface, improves support and blitzes bugs

One month after open-source media player VLC reached its landmark 2.0 release, the VideoLAN Organization has released VLC 2.0.1 FINAL. The brand new update of this popular cross-platform media player divided opinion – particularly among Mac users – when version 2.0 shipped, and this latest release aims to fix many bugs and annoyances reported over the intervening period. Version 2.0.1 also tweaks the revamped Mac OS X user interface further, plus adds support for MxPEG files and streams as well as limited support for Blu-ray disc menus. It also improves support for multi-tracked MKV video files and removes version 2.0’s “flawed” auto-detection of ALSA audio channels. There are also a number of security updates. The most visible changes can be found on the Mac platform. Having already overhauled the user interface for VLC 2.0, version 2.0.1 tweaks things further to provide more customization options for OS X users. Watch just about any video on any platform using VLC Media Player The Qt interface can now be customized to let users replace the blue seek slider with a sleeker, native one. There are also fixes to the playlist, menus, the main toolbar and various dialogs, including add-ons, open, preferences and customization. In terms of file and disc access, there are a number of major fixes in VLC 2.0.1. CDDB information retrieval has been both fixed and improved for music CDs, and a number of unspecified fixes for both Blu-ray disc playback and HLS support (particularly on the Windows platform) and for encryption. Also fixed is DVD decryption on some RPC-1 drives. Also fixed is UDP/RTP multicast stream reception on OS X Macs using the 10.7 SDK. Other fixes include support for split RAR archives, tweaks to the web interface – adding support for .3ga and .drc file extensions while also fix mobiles display for remote control mode. In all there are over 120 bug fixes and a number of security updates. VLC 2.0.1 FINAL is an open-source, free download for Windows, OS X and Linux.

Opera 10.63 released

The increasingly popular web browser Opera has been updated to version 10.63. while in terms of version numbering this could be seen as a minor update, the latest version of the browser includes a number of important stability and performance enhancements. Perhaps one of the most important bug fixes to be found in Opera 10.63 plugs a security hole which previously allowed for data theft by bypassing cross domain checks. In a similar vein, security problems that allowed for easier web address spoofing have also been fixed. Browser stability has also been improved thanks to the fixing of a bug that caused Opera to run at 100% CPU usage as well as a number of issues that had been detected with JavaScript implementation. Opera is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. There is a mobile version and a mini version of the browser for your smartphone. Find out more about the most recent version of the browser and download from Downloadcrew.

Webroot reveals super-fast, ultra-lightweight SecureAnywhere 2012

Webroot is describing its new SecureAnywhere 2012 range as being "the fastest and lightest virus and spyware protection you can buy". And while this sounds like more security company hype, on first glance at least it looks like they may have a point. The core antivirus engine is a compact and ultra-lightweight cloud-based affair, which makes smart choices about the files it checks to minimise scan times. Webroot say this means system scans will typically be under two minutes, something that we confirmed (they were closer to 30 seconds on our test PC). And the program is very careful about its use of RAM: we found it peaked at around 50MB when scanning, and when idle was closer to 5MB (private working set). Yet despite this compact framework, there are still plenty of useful features to be found here. Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus 2012 ($39.95) provides real-time protection, on-demand and scheduled scanning, some browsing protection, a sandbox, the ability to prevent malware from changing your settings, and more. Webroot SecureAnywhere Essentials 2012 ($59.95) takes that core package and adds a firewall, privacy tools, a phishing filter, and 2GB of online server space to use for file synchronisation or basic backups. And the high-end package, Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2012 ($79.95) further adds password management, extends your online backup space to 10GB, and perhaps most importantly, offers additional security packages for both iOS and Android devices. These will variously scan your apps for threats, block dangerous website and secure your online transactions, and if you've a 3 or 4G device can also try to locate a lost device, and even wipe it remotely. The SecureAnywhere range is lacking in a few areas. In particular, there's no spam filter or parental controls, which can leave the programs looking a little expensive. Still, if you're tired of your system being weighed down by bloated security suites then there's plenty to like here. All the packages really are fast and lightweight, and for the most part you'll be able to use your system without knowing they're running. What's more, both SecureAnywhere Essentials 2012 and SecureAnywhere Complete 2012 actually are licensed for installation on up to 3 PCs, so if you'll use all those, and perhaps the mobile security features, then the price begins to look much more reasonable. Either way, SecureAnywhere represents a major and very interesting revamp of the Webroot range, and is definitely worth a closer look. Trial versions of all three SecureAnywhere packages are available now.

Find, install and update free software with Milouz Market

Managing the software on your PC can sometimes feel like a full-time job, as you have to find the best applications, download and install each one, then do your best to keep them up-to-date. If you have better things to do with your time, though, you could just install Milouz Market, which can manage a lot of this almost entirely automatically. The program must be installed itself, unfortunately (there's no portable option). But that's easy enough, and on its first launch Milouz Market will then scan your PC for all its supported applications. There are only just over 50, but the list does at least have plenty of big names, including 7-Zip, Adobe Flash, Adobe Reader, avast! free antivirus, AVG Free, CCleaner, Dropbox, FFDShow, Freemake Video Converter, GIMP, Google Chrome, Java, K-Lite Codec Pack, LibreOffice, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Picasa, Recuva, Skype, UltraVNC, VirtualBox, VLC Media Player and µTorrent. When the scan is complete you'll see a grid-based report, with any programs requiring an update at the very top. Simply click the Update button for as many apps as you like (or use the Update All button to select everything), and Milouz Market will download and install everything for you. There's support for more than 50 popular applications and tools Your system is fully up-to-date? You can also use the program to find and install interesting applications. Suppose you need a photo editor, for example - you might scroll down the report, see PhotoFiltre, and wonder if it could be useful. Clicking the Help icon will display a little more information, and if it looks good, clicking Update will download and install it automatically, without you doing anything else (no browser windows to open, no files to download, no setup program to navigate - nothing). And if you decide later that you don't need one of the supported applications after all, then Milouz Market can still help. Just click the Delete icon to its right and the program will be uninstalled for you. The obvious issue here at the moment is the relative lack of supported applications. There's enough to be useful, though, and if this is a big problem for you then the author is openly inviting suggestions for new programs which he can add to the list (send an email to market@milouz.com). There are also some smaller issues here and there. Hitting the Delete button will remove an application without asking for confirmation, for instance, which seems a little risky. And although this is nominally an English language version, it still includes fragments of French here and there (a "Fermer" button on the Help dialog, for example): no big deal, but it looks a little sloppy. Still, Milouz Market, is small, extremely easy to use, and the author seems to have big plans for the future (you'll be able to maintain a list of your software on a central server, for instance). We'll be intrigued to see where the program goes next.

Dropbox launches dedicated Windows 8 app

Cloud-storage provider Dropbox, fresh from opening a second hub in Dublin, Ireland, has launched a dedicated app for Windows 8 tablets and computers. Dropbox for Windows 8 offers basic functionality in its initial release, but allows users to browse and preview files from within the app itself, plus open, save and edit files using other apps such as OneNote. The app’s release basically brings Dropbox functionality to Windows RT, the cut-down version of Windows 8 found on ARM-powered devices such as tablets, for the first time. It can be installed alongside the Dropbox desktop app on regular Windows 8 machines for access through the new Modern UI. Once installed from the Windows Store, the Dropbox app is launched from the Windows 8 Start screen, and sports the usual minimalist, stripped-back interface of its contemporaries. It actually bears more than a passing resemblance to the Microsoft SkyDrive app that ships with Windows 8. The new Dropbox app gives you access to your Dropbox storage from within other apps. Functionality within the app itself is currently rather limited. You can browse your Dropbox folder and preview individual files, plus use the Search and Share charms to look for content and share it with other apps and services respectively. However, there are currently no options for editing or deleting items directly from the app – instead, users must install the desktop version, Dropbox 1.6.13 for the complete functionality. The only way users can directly access, edit and update files within the Modern UI is via other Windows 8 apps. When opting to open a file in another app, a Dropbox options allows users to access their folders, selecting files to open. A pause follows while the selected file or files are physically downloaded to the user’s computer. Dropbox for Windows 8 is a free download for PCs and tablets running Windows 8 or Windows RT. Dropbox 1.6.13 is a free download for Windows, Mac and OS X, while apps for iPad/iPhone and Android are also available. A free or paid-for Dropbox account is also required to use the service.

Watch TV channels from across the world with ChrisTV Online! FREE

Let's be frank: most free internet TV apps are utter rubbish, little more than a front end to a collection of web links which either don't work, or point to channels or shows which you'd never want to watch anyway. One or two applications are a little more interesting, though. And ChrisTV Online! FREE, in particular, shows rather more ambition than most of its more basic competition. Things don't start too well, admittedly, with the program trying to add no less than three browser addons during its installation process (including a less-than-obvious option on the very final screen). Launch ChrisTV Online! FREE, though, and you're presented with a straightforward interface - a TV tuner sidebar, playing area and basic controls - which provides plenty of options to explore. Browse the channel list, double-click something and you could be watching it immediately Click the OnlineTV tab, for instance, and you'll find a lengthy list of channels which can be grouped in various ways: by country, genre, language, station type and more. Many of the more popular channels aren't available in this free edition, unfortunately, but there are plenty of others available. And while, just occasionally we found a link which didn't work, this was nothing like as common as problem as we've seen in similar tools. This was just the start, though. ChrisTV Online! FREE can also help you browse Justin.tv and Veetle channels. These were easy to view - choose a category, double-click a channel and watch - and although resolution wasn't always the highest, this did at least make for pause-free playback. A "Movies" tab was a little more mixed. An "HD Movies" box was entirely empty, but a "High Quality Movies" option acted as a front end to a website where you can watch various movies online. (Largely pirated, though, so best avoided if you're concerned about copyright issues or have the faintest interest in picture quality.) And a "TV Shows" tab similarly provides easy access to a couple of websites where you can locate and view a wide range of big-name shows. In theory, anyway. We found playback typically froze every few seconds, making it largely unwatchable, but this might vary depending on your location and viewing time. ChrisTV Online! FREE has plenty of frustrations, then, but it still delivers considerably more functionality than much of the competition. And if there's nothing on your local TV right now, the program's lengthy list of viewing options should keep you entertained for quite some time.

Review: LibreOffice Productivity Suite 3.5.0

There aren’t many things in life that you can say are completely free. In the case of free software, you often find that you are having to make some sort of compromise whether it be in putting up with a limited version of a commercial application, enduring advertisements, or simply having to work with something that is less than impressive in terms of standards. Almost every computer user has need for an office suite, or at least some component of it, at some point, if not every day of their lives. Microsoft Office may be the most widely installed suite, but for the average user it is expensive and unless a copy came pre-installed on your computer, you may not feel inclined to part with that amount of money. This explains the increased interest in free alternatives, and one such suite is LibreOffice Productivity Suite which has just hit the milestone release number of 3.5.0. It is fair to say that an office suite is not the most exciting piece of software anyone is going to be installing, but it is something that is vital to so many people and it is important that it does its job well. One of the reasons Microsoft Office is so popular is the fact that it is so feature-packed that it can cater for almost any requirements you may have. When you start to look at free alternatives, you’ll often find that quality starts to slip and important features start to get dropped. These are not charges that can be leveled at LibreOffice which is just about as riddled with features as you could possibly hope. Should you be unfamiliar with the suite, this particular set of office programs comprises a word processor, spreadsheet, drawing tool, presentation application, a database and an equation editor. Fully loaded suite LibreOffice Writer has everything you need to create letters, novels and more It is impressive to see that a database tool has been included, and while this is not something that everyone will need it great to see that no corners have been cut. For many people, the cornerstone of any office suite is the word processor, and LibreOffice’s offering is suitably adorned with everything you would expect. On the fly spell checking has become a fairly standard feature of modern word processors and while grammar checking is sometimes available, it is often slow and unreliable. The latest version of LibreOffice sees the introduction of a faster checker and improved handling of errors to help make it clearer what issues have been detected. Recent changes to the handling of headers and footers make these document components even easier to work with. But an office suite is about more than the word processor, and the spreadsheet tool is just as important. Calc is an extremely competent program that is Excel compatible and now boasts support for documents that contain up to 10,000 sheets. Elsewhere in the suite you’ll also find the presentation tool Impress, drawing and logo creation app Draw, and Math the equation and formulae editor. Each of these programs has very much the same look, so once you have spent time using any of them, you’ll immediately feel at home in any of the others. Speedy development This is an office suite that has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. Breaking away from OpenOffice has led to a faster development cycle which in turn has mean that it has been possible to address issues that have been causing problems for users in different ways. Something that has long deterred serious writers from making the switch to LibreOffice was the lack of a live word count. This might seem like a minor point, but when you need to write to a word count, you want to be able to focus on getting the words down on the page rather than having to keep checking through menus to see how many more words you have left to work with. The addition of a live word count to the latest version is a small but important change, and just goes to demonstrate that such a little thing makes such as big difference, and is an excellent example of listening to the target audience. LibreOffice Calc supports gigantic spreadsheets of up to 10,000 sheets In the past, if you wanted to keep up to date with the latest version of the suite, it meant having to perform a manual check online to see if anything new had been released. Arguably one of the most useful additions to the software is the update availability notifier – when a new release hits the servers, the program will let you know so you can update your program straight away. There are few complaints with LibreOffice, but where it does fall down slightly is in terms of looks. The toolbars are a little cluttered and the design of some of the buttons a little busy, and the aforementioned live word count, while useful, has been oddly implemented so a separate window needs to be kept open to monitor a changing word count. The way the installer works is interestingly different to other apps and recognizes the fact that making the switch from one office suite to another is a big step. On the one hand, the installer informs you that it could be used as the default handler for Word, Excel and PowerPoint document – but importantly, does not steal file associations by default – and also points out the fact that if you are only trying out the suite you might want to leave this option disabled. This is a small touch, but it irons out an annoyance that has plagued too many other programs in the past. Cross-platform compatibility A big plus point for LibreOffice is the fact that it is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. Cost conscious computer users may have opted to go down the Linux route to save money on hardware and software, and this suite is available for users of this operating system. But if you are working in a multi-platform office environment, or want a reliable way to collaborate on projects with people using different systems, this is a great way of ensuring a level playing field on which everyone has access to the same tools and options and does not have to worry about incompatibility issues. Overall, this is an office suite that comes highly recommended. The decision to break away from the main OpenOffice product has led to a faster development cycle and this has resulted in the impressive product we now see before us. Choosing an office suite is quite a personal affair, and it is not possible for one suite to cater to the needs of every user. LibreOffice Productivity Suite 3.5.0 achieves an excellent balance of everyday features that are intuitive and more powerful options that will be welcomed by businesses and power users. Whether you are currently in the market for a new office suite or not, this is well worth taking a look at as you may just be swayed. However it is worth noting that this release (version 3.5.0) is recommended for power users - The Document Foundation recommends that less technically minded users and businesses hold off updating for the time being.
