Windows Explorer Tracker: easily record Explorer's file-based actions

When you need to understand exactly what programs are doing on your PC then tools such as Process Hacker, Process Explorer or Process Monitor will almost certainly get the job done. They're compact, powerful, and an excellent aid for all kinds of troubleshooting tasks. These tools often produce extremely lengthy reports crammed with low-level detail, though, which can be intimidating to some users. And so if you're looking for something more straightforward, you might be interested in the free Windows Explorer Tracker, as it's the kind of system monitoring tool which just about anyone can use. The program focuses on tracking high-level drive, file and folder-based actions: delete, create, rename, insert, add or remove. Which means there's nothing on file modifications, Registry activities or process actions (launching programs, threads and so on). The Tracker reports provide a very easy-to-understand record of your file and folder-based activities And as you might guess from its name, Windows Explorer Tracker is primarily about tracking what's happening in Explorer. There's no complexity to it, just launch the program and then watch as your file creates, deletes and so on are listed in a table (though they're also saved to log files for easy reference later). In our tests we found Windows Explorer Tracker did record details from some other programs, though, as they worked with temporary files, saved test images and more. And it also successfully recorded the actions of some (though not all) installation programs, handy if you'd like a better idea of what a particular setup tool is doing to your system. For all this, Windows Explorer Tracker still has only a tiny fraction of the power of the big-name system monitors. If you really want to understand what Explorer is doing then there's no substitute for learning how to use something like Process Monitor. If you only need a more basic record of your file and folder-related operations, though, Windows Explorer Tracker certainly delivers, and that could be enough to justify its inclusion in your troubleshooting toolkit.

Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 adds intelligent hyperlink recognition

Nitro PDF Software has released version 1.4 of their PDF Reader, a small but worthwhile update that contains a number of useful time-saving features. And top of the list is their new intelligent hyperlink recognition, a simple but welcome addition that should get help you to bypass a common PDF annoyance. You've seen it many times: your PDF document includes a URL, but it's in plain text, and therefore clicking it has precisely no effect at all. Which is irritating. Nitro PDF Reader actually scans the document ahead of time and converts plain text web addresses into active links, though, so there's no need to manually open a browser window and paste the address - you can simply click the URL to open a site, as the author intended. If you ever have to close a PDF file before you've finished reading it, then there's more good news: Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 should remember and restore your last page, along with the page view and zoom settings, when you next re-open the file. Or, at least, that's the theory. In practice we found this didn't work when the program was installed, as the feature was turned off by default. Fortunately it can easily be enabled from PDF Reader's settings (File > Preferences > Interface, check "Restore last view settings when reopening documents"). And elsewhere there are a range of tweaks to existing features, which generally makes the program more intuitive and easier to use. So, for instance, the Ctrl+A keypress now selects the entire document, which we'd expect, rather than just the current page (which we really wouldn't). You can now toggle full screen view by pressing F11, just as in Firefox and Internet Explorer. And the Output Pane is hidden unless it has something to display, helping to deliver a cleaner, simpler interface. These are only small incremental changes, then, but in combination they all help make Nitro PDF Reader 1.4 an even more usable alternative to Adobe Reader. The program remains free of charge, and it's available now.

Add shortcuts to Windows 7's right click menu

Windows' right click menu has many uses. It is sometimes referred to as the context menu but its contents can change depending on the item that was selected when the right mouse button was pressed - different items appear in the menu if the desktop has clicked than when a file is clicked, for example. Using Your Menu, you can transform the right click menu of Windows 7 into an handy repository of shortcuts to programs you use on a regular basis, avoiding the need to look through the Start menu or clutter your desktop with icons. Some of the programs you have installed may have already added their own entries to the right click menu and it could be the case that your menu is already fairly lengthy. If this is the case, you can take advantage of Your Menu's option to create a cascading menu. With this option selected, any shortcuts you choose to add to the right click menu will not appear in the root of the menu, but in a sub-menu. To start customising your right click menu, install and launch Your Menu. To add a shortcut to a single program, select the Single option at the top of the screen and in the Menu Name column, enter a meaningful name for the shortcut you are adding. Click in the corresponding empty field in the Select program column and use Explorer to select the program you would like to create a link to. Now click the Generate REG File button in the lower right hand corner, choose a name and save location and two .reg files will be created for you - one will have the name of the program you are adding and the other with be appended with the word 'undo'. Double click the [program_name].reg file you have created, and the necessary registry changes will be made for you and when you click the right mouse button you should see that your new entry is present. Should you decide that you want to remove a menu entry you have created with Your Menu, simply double click the [program_name]_undo.reg file to reverse the changes that have been made to the registry. You can use this 'single' menu entry creation method to create as many new shortcuts in the Windows 7 right click menu as you need, and all can be easily removed when you no longer need them. The other option is to create a cascading menu which is a great way to add a large number of shortcuts without creating a lengthy menu. Select the Cascading option at the top of the Your Menu window and enter a suitable name for the menu entry. Using the empty fields below you can create shortcuts in the same way as before, generating the necessary registry file and undo option when you're ready. Your Menu is a very simple idea, but it can be put to great use. If you're tired of having to hunt through the Start menu to launch a particular program, you can ensure that a shortcut is never more than a click away.

Opera 11.10 released, boasts faster Turbo, revamped Speed Dial

Less than one month after arriving in beta, Opera 11.10 has been given a final release. One standout feature is an overhaul of Opera’s Turbo function, which is designed to speed up browsing on slow networks such as dial-up connections, 3G networks and crowded wi-fi hotspots. Opera Turbo, which works by reducing the size of the web page being requested before its sent to the browser, now uses Google’s new WebP image format. This helps speed up browsing further while better maintaining the quality of the page’s images after compression. Opera claims that in testing the changes introduced in version 11.10 produce pages that are 35 per cent smaller and subsequently 15 per cent quicker to load than before. For those who missed the beta release, Opera 11.10 also features a greatly improved Speed Dial feature. It now supports an unlimited number of dials thanks to a new button that allows the user to add their choice of sites to the list. To help facilitate this change, the Speed Dial layout is now customisable, and the user can choose a layout of between two and five columns. An improved zoom slider makes it practical to accommodate even five-column layouts on smaller displays. Other changes are less prominent: the Flash plug-in is now installed automatically in the background the first time it’s required, while there’s added support for new web standards, including the WebP image format Opera has utilised to improve its Turbo feature. Opera 11.10 is freeware, and available for PCs running Linux or Windows 2000 or later, plus Intel Macs (running OS X 10.4 or later).

Adobe releases Android apps that turn tablets into viable design tools

Adobe is a name associated with design tools, and it has long been associated with desktop software that can be used to create everything from websites and products designs to page layouts and perfect photos. But in recent years there has been a huge interest in mobile devices, and while handheld devices are a little limited when it comes to being used as a design tool, the same cannot be said of tablets. The larger screens found on tablets have been put to great use in Adobe’s latest Android apps – Adobe Photoshop Touch, Adobe Proto and Adobe Debut. Adobe Photoshop Touch is, perhaps unsurprisingly, a touch screen compatible version of the company’s flagship image editing tool. The selection tool has been redesigned to make it easier to control with just a fingertip, and the usual raft of filters and effects can be found here to help enhance images on the move. For most people, this app will be the one that appeals most from Adobe’s new range of Touch Apps. For designers, Adobe Debut can be used to debut ideas to clients, while Adobe Proto can be used to draw up design prototypes – the naming convention could not be accused of being illogical. Each has the feel of being a tool that has been designed specifically with touch screen mobile devices in mind, rather than just being a knocked together port of an existing piece of software. Debut can be viewed as a presentation tool that can be used to show off designs that have been created on your Mac or PC, while Proto can be used to create wireframe mockups of apps, pages and web sites – these can be interactive so you can get an idea of how things will work as well as how they will look. Each of the tools can be used in conjunction with Adobe Creative Cloud which makes it possible to upload files from your desktop to an online storage location and then access them on your tablet – but this is obviously dependant on being able to pick up an internet connection on your Android. Weighing in at $9.99, these are not cheap apps, but they have heritage. Adobe is one of the few companies that can justify charging such an amount for a mobile app, but the software still need to live up to the price tag. With its foray into the iOS market, Adobe had a chance to test the water with its mobile apps. The tools that are now available for Android are well evolved apps that are surprisingly well developed considering the 1.0 version numbers. You can find out more about these apps by paying a visit to the review pages – Adobe Photoshop Touch, Adobe Debut and Adobe Proto.

Boot Camp 5 adds Windows 8 64-bit support

With Apple’s release of OS X 10.8.3, the latest update for Mountain Lion, it has upgraded the Boot Camp utility, which allows users to dual-boot Windows and OS X on a supported Mac, to version 5. Boot Camp 5 allows users to install either 64-bit editions of Windows 7 or 8 alongside their copy of OS X – by downloading Boot Camp Support Software 5, you’ll have all the drivers you need to run Windows on your Mac. One consequence of upgrading to Boot Camp 5 is that support for 32-bit versions of Windows – including XP and Vista as well as 32-bit iterations of Windows 7 and 8 – is no longer supported. Boot Camp 5 effectively ties Mountain Lion users into choosing Windows 7 or 8 as their alternative OS by dropping support for all previous versions of Windows. It doesn’t affect existing Boot Camp installations, so should you wish to install XP, Vista or a 32-bit version of Windows 7, make sure you set it up now before applying the OS X 10.8.3 update. Alternatively, go down the virtualisation route by installing a copy in a virtual machine for free using VirtualBox. BootCamp 5.0 supports 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and 8 only. Boot Camp 5 not only supports 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and 8, it also now supports Macs with 3TB hard drives. It’s only available through the OS X 10.8.3 update, which also upgraded Safari to version 6.0.3. Therefore Macs running OS X Lion or earlier aren’t supported. Users will need to source their own copy of Windows 7 or 8 – you can download Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit as an ISO image here to work with a licensed product key. The Boot Camp Support Software 5 contains the latest versions of all Apple hardware drivers across its platforms – including Thunderbolt, USB 3.0, Apple Trackpad and all chipset, wireless, audio, Bluetooth, keyboard support and graphics. Also installed are the Boot Camp Control Panel for Windows and the System Task Notification item. Boot Camp Support Software 5 is a free 554MB download for Macs running OS X 10.8.3 or later – the drivers are installed after Windows has been installed using Boot Camp 5. Updated versions of Boot Camp Support Software 4 are also available for existing Boot Camp installations - visit Apple Support for details.
