Windows disc-burning tool BurnAware 6.0 Free has been released. This major update, also available with additional features as BurnAware 6.0 Premium (rebadged from Home Edition) and BurnAware 6.0 Professional, comes with an updated burning engine and a number of new features, including a new tool for checking discs for read errors. BurnAware 6.0 also ships with a number of improvements, including the grouping of all burning elements at the bottom of the main form, and a number of notable bug fixes. BurnAware 6.0 adds a new View menu to its roster, allowing users to view the basic options in normal or large size. The new menu is joined by a brand new Verify Disc tool that scans discs for read errors. Users can now specify the cache size when burning in BurnAware 6.0. Also added is an option to burn an 800MB CD from the Disc Type drop-down list, plus users can now select the cache size (press [F10] and then set the size via the Recorder tab). BurnAware 6.0 also adds support for importing multi-extent and UDF embedded files, and there’s a new log window accessible from the Copy Disc and Copy to Image tools. The program’s burning engine has been updated, and the user manual has been rewritten from scratch to reflect all the changes in this new build. BurnAware 6.0 is also now capable of locking the burning drive for exclusive access when burning using the SCSI Pass Through Interface (SPTI). Version 6.0 also promises better optimized data transfer and buffering during the burning process. The update is rounded off with five notable bug fixes: problems causing potential read errors in produced disc images, write errors at the end of the burning process on DVD-R/-RW discs and with ejecting discs at the end of the burning process have all been resolved, along with fixes for BD-R disc burning errors on certain Pioneer drives and the “A general error occurred” error that occasionally appeared while Blu-Ray disc images were being prepared. BurnAware 6.0 Free is available as a free-for-personal-use download for PCs running Windows XP or later. Users wanting direct disc-to-disc copying capabilities and the ability to extract audio tracks and recover files from discs should download the 10-day trial of BurnAware 6.0 Premium, while a 10-day trial of BurnAware 6.0 Professional adds an option for burning a single ISO to multiple drives simultaneously to its commercial-use license. The two packages cost $29.95 and $39.95 respectively.

With more and more computer users counting the pennies, the move to lower cost and free software is gaining momentum. Microsoft Office may still be the world’s most popular office suite, but there is a growing user base that has turned to one of the free alternatives that have been gathering strength in recent years.  LibreOffice is one such suite, and the latest version addresses a series of known bugs and helps to improve stability. Although there are now major new features or options to be found in LibreOffice 3.6.2 – this crown was taken by the 3.6 release – there have been improvements in a number of areas which increase the overall stability of the program and make it a piece of software that more businesses are likely to look to as a free office suite. 3.6.2 includes bug fixes for both the Windows and OS X versions of the suite. LibreOffice 3.6.2 Among the changes are several crashes fixes in different areas of the suite, and correctly an error with older versions of the Javas Runtime Environment. Problems with saving and opening files in different formats have been address, as have issues with the word count and PDF creation features. Other fixes include changes to the way footnotes are displayed when the mouse is hovered over them – they are now shown on a single line for ease of reading – as well as addressing a problem that caused LibreOffice to crash when opening Lotus 123 files. Additional spreadsheet related fixes include changes to the pasting of data between cells and various issues that had been found with pivot tables. You can find out more and download a free copy of the program by paying a visit to the LibreOffice review page.

If you're bored with the regular Windows wallpaper then there's no shortage of software which can help. But much of it will just download fairly random images from a variety of online sources. And even if you can select a theme which appeals to you - "landscapes", "animals" or whatever - there's no guarantee that you'll like everything the program selects. Livecam Wallpaper, though, is different. As you might guess from the name, the program allows you to set images from your choice of internet webcams as wallpaper, so you can be sure the picture will be something you like. But it can then update the images as often as every 10 seconds, a very interesting way to bring your desktop to life. We were initially a little wary of the program, as it sounds like just the kind of tool which comes bundled with ten toolbars. But no. The download is a compact 834KB, and it only includes the core program files. Even the Livecam Wallpaper licence is only 168 words long, a refreshing change these days. The program offers a host of gorgeous webcam pictures to choose from The core interface is very simple, too. There are no menus, no hidden settings - everything you need is accessible from one dialog. And so you'll start by setting the number of webcams you'd like to use (1, 4 or 9). There's the refresh time to decide (10 seconds, then 1, 3 or 10 minutes). And after you've chosen whether Livecam Wallpaper should load from the desktop, that's your basic settings completed. All you have to do now is choose your webcams, and that's just as easy. Choose a category, first: "HD", "City", "Mountains", "Tech" and so on. Then click the default image, select your preferred camera and the desktop will be updated right away. There are some limitations here. The webcam categories don't all offer a lot of choice, for example - "City" has 45, but "Forest" has only 3. And while the program includes webcams from all over the world, there's a considerable bias towards Europe. This kind of idea may not be too practical in some cases, either. If you display icons on your desktop, the regularly changing images may make them hard to view sometimes. And there's the resource usage to consider. Memory requirements are impressively low at under 9MB when minimised, but if you're updating 9 pictures regularly then that's going to generate plenty of network and hard drive activity. Overall, though, Livecam Wallpaper remains a very likeable program. It's easy to use, looks great, has some spectacular webcams, and does its best not to be too demanding (you can always turn off the "Run on startup" option and run it just occasionally). So if you're bored with normal wallpaper then this makes a great alternative.

Evernote, the online note taking and sharing service, has released a new version of its Windows client. Evernote 4.2 promises a host of new features coupled with improvements and bug fixes, and is a recommended download for all Windows Evernote users. Version 4.2 adds a preferences dialogue box for the Evernote Web Clipper option for Internet Explorer, which is built into the Windows client (Firefox and Chrome extensions are also available separately). URLs are now automatically converted into clickable links when typed in, and there are a number of improvements across the program, including the note editor which is now described as more “robust and reliable”. The Web Clippers Preferences dialogue box now lets users specify where web clips are sent to by default, plus choose whether to strip all but the most basic of formatting and suppress the New Clip dialogue box if it’s not required. The note editor has been made more stable through a number of improvements. Fonts are handled better, while there’s better reliability when creating or pasting numbered, bulleted and multi-levelled lists. There’s also improved control over the display of encrypted text, while the clipboard shortcuts benefit from improved support across the note editor too. Background synchronisation can now be enabled from the Task tray, while there’s also better printing options, ink note support and improved file drag and drop, with support for adding text files. Corporate users will also be pleased to learn that Evernote 4.2 has improved its proxy support too. Evernote 4.2 is available now for Windows XP, Vista and 7.

Installing a regularly-updated antivirus tool will ensure you're protected against most malware, but no security suite is 100% effective, and of course they're all vulnerable to the very latest threats. So if your PC is behaving strangely and you think you might have been infected by something nasty, but your antivirus tool says otherwise, then you need another way to explore what's going on. And we've the perfect candidate. Launch Process Hacker and at first it looks like a more colourful version of Task Manager, with details on all the processes running on your PC. And you can use it in much the same way. Click Hacker > Show Details for All Processes, then scroll down the list, looking for any process name that seems unfamiliar. Spot something unusual, though, and you can start to take advantage of Process Hacker's extra features. Right-click a process and click Search Online, for instance, and a browser page will open with the results of a Google search for that process name. If it turns out to be an innocent application, then that's good news. But if you discover that it might be malware, then right-click the process again and select Miscellaneous > Upload to VirusTotal. The site will scan it with more than 40 antivirus and security tools, and you'll see another browser page open where you can read the results. If you're still suspicious of a particular process, then double-click it for more information. The General tab provides basic information like where the process is stored. Clicking the Handles table will show you any files or Registry keys the process has open, often a useful clue as to what it might be doing. And best of all, clicking Memory > String Scan will search the processes RAM for any text strings and display the results. These vary depending on how the process is coded, but generally you'll see file names here, text prompts, copyright messages, internet addresses and anything else embedded in the program, all very useful when you're trying to figure out whether this is a legitimate process or not. If manual searches alone don't reveal anything then Process Hacker has a couple of other options that might help. Click the Network tab, for instance, and you'll see all the processes that currently have a network connection option. The Remote Address column will highlight any internet connections, and you can even find out who owns the remote address by right-clicking the relevant process and selecting Tools > WhoIs. And if you click Tools > Hidden Processes > Scan then Process Hacker will try to locate and highlight any processes that might be trying to stay out of sight. There are two ways of doing this, so if the default "CSR Handles" method doesn't work, try Brute Force instead. This isn't quite as reliable (we found it highlighted GoogleUpdate.exe once) so don't panic if it picks something up. Rather, run the Brute Force test a couple of other times, then apply the tests mentioned above to confirm that this really is malware.

Your hard drive is buzzing, and you don't know why. Finding out what's going on is probably a good idea: at best a legitimate program is tying up resources and slowing you down, at worst you've got a malware infection. But what do you do now? Launching FolderChangesView, the latest release from NirSoft, could be a good first move. The program monitors file changes on your hard drive, and opens by asking exactly which base folder you'd like it to watch. By default this is C:\, but can be set to whatever you like. And you also have the option to view changes only in that folder, or all its subfolders as well. For your first run, though, just click OK to accept the default settings, then do something which will create file system activity: launch Firefox, say. And immediately you'll see the FolderChangesView window begin to detail what's happening, listing the path and name of any files; whether they've been created, modified or deleted; and the date and time of each event. The program lists all new and modified files on your hard drive If you have been experiencing any odd hard drive activity then this report, in particular the file and folder names, should give more clues as to the cause (Firefox-related action usually takes place in or below the \Users\[UserName]|AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox folder, for instance). And simply leaving FolderChangesView running for a while can tell you a lot about what's happening on your system. If you find a non-critical program is more active than you thought then maybe it's worth considering removing or restricting it in some way, so reducing background activity and improving your PC's performance. Of course Sysinternals Process Monitor (a far more sophisticated tool) will do all the same things, and a lot more, including telling you which process is responsible for each action. FolderChangesView is simpler and easier to use, though, so if you'd just like to find out more about drive activity right now - no need to mess around with filters or anything else - then the program makes a better first choice. Although as the entire set of FolderChangesView files consume only around 92KB on our test PC, it's not really as though you have to pick one or the other. We say: you need them both.

RootsMagic, Inc has updated its popular family history software, RootsMagic, to version 5.0. RootsMagic 5, which can be road-tested as a cut-down Essentials version, adds a number of new features for those who purchase the full version. These include media tagging, a research manager and timeline view. The software also benefits from around 80 non-specified improvements, a selection of which apply to RootsMagic Essentials 5 package too. All of the new features are restricted to the full version of RootsMagic 5 only, which can be unlocked by purchasing a registration code and inputting it into RootsMagic Essentials. These include a new Timeline View, which allows individual lives to be seen in the context of their family members. CountyCheck is a new feature designed to help establish whether states, counties or even countries were in existence, and what their geographical boundaries were, when a selected ancestor was alive. RootsMagic 5 also supports media tagging for the first time, allowing you to tag a single photo or document with multiple people, families, sources or places. There’s a Research Manager designed to help focus the user’s mind on specific tasks that need completing, and an “On This Day” list, which provides historical context for selected dates in history. Also added to the full version is a database management tool, capable of testing the research file’s integrity as well as providing index rebuilding features and the ability to strip out deleted records to compress the file. RootsMagic 5 also benefits from 80 other enhancements and features. Again, many are restricted to the full version of the program, but there are several notable improvements that work in RootsMagic 5 Essentials too. These include a streamlined Edit Person window, which makes it easier to review and edit a person’s details in a single window. The ability to add unlimited facts, notes, sources, people and more has also been implemented in version 5 while both Places List and Descendant List views have also been improved, along with the process of adding source documentation to individuals, families or places. RootsMagic 5 Essentials is a free download for PCs running Windows 2000 or later. The full version of RootsMagic 5 can be unlocked from within RootsMagic Essentials for $29.95 ($19.95 if upgrading from an earlier version), and includes many other additional features to those added in version 5.

When you're looking to speed up your PC's operations then learning any available keyboard shortcuts can often help, by minimising the time and effort required to perform common system tasks. If you've already mastered the standard shortcuts, though, it may be time to consider creating your own - and HotKeyMan is a very simple way to help you get started. The program creates a few sample shortcuts when it's installed, allowing you to minimise, maximise or restore the active window. Pressing Win+N will launch Notepad, while Win+S fires up HotKeyMan's screen capture tool, which displays the current screen and allows you to save it to a file with a click. And if this isn't enough, the New Hotkey wizard makes it easy to create additional shortcuts of your own. A simple interface makes it easy to manage your existing hotkeys The process starts by choosing your preferred keyboard shortcut, which may be constructed from your choice of four Shift keys (Win, Alt, Ctrl, Shift) and any other key. Next, you select the action your shortcut should perform. This may maximise, minimise or close the active window; open a program or document; launch a particular website; place predefined text (or the content of a specific file) in the clipboard; capture the active window or screen; exit Windows, or send keypresses to the current application. And once you've set this up, that's it: you just leave HotKeyMan running in the background (consuming just a little over 11MB RAM), and it'll carry out your defined actions whenever the matching hotkey is pressed. If you've tried PC automation tools before then you'll probably have realised already that HotKeyMan is a little on the basic side - and you're quite right, as most of the options are fairly limited. Even the ability to send keypresses isn't as useful as you might think, because it's not possible to simulate control or shift keys (you can't send Alt+F to open a menu, for instance). What's more, Windows provides some of HotKeyMan's capabilities already, no need to install anything further. If you want a keyboard shortcut to launch a program, say, just right-click its Start menu shortcut, click Properties and set whatever you need in the Shortcut Key field: it's as easy as that. HotKeyMan isn't going to impress the Windows expert user, then, but if you're just after something simple then there are plus points here. The screen capture tool is a convenient way to save grabs to disc; the shortcuts can be set up to use the Windows key, and are easily edited; the ability to place the contents of particular files into the clipboard could be very interesting for some; and the whole program is lightweight and easy to use. If you're looking for very basic PC automation with none of the usual complexities then HotKeyMan just might fit the bill.

When you're looking to optimise a PC's performance, then defragmenting its hard drive and reorganising the file layout is generally a very good place to start: it's easy to do, typically delivers great results, and doesn't have to cost you anything as there are plenty of excellent freeware defrag utilities around. Auslogics Disk Defrag 3, for instance, has always been one of our favourite PC freebies. A clean interface makes it easy to use, defragging is fast and the program can rearrange your files to noticeably improve performance. It's a great product, so when we heard the company would be enhancing it to produce a commercial version, Disk Defrag Professional 4 ($29.95), we were very interested to see exactly what features might be added. And so when a very complete, near-finished beta version arrived, we installed it to take a closer look. Interface The program itself remains compact, with a 3MB installer, and a 12MB disk footprint. The interface has undergone a major revamp, though, and while you generally operate it in a similar way, there's much more to explore. Click the Analyse button to check the condition of a drive, for instance, and as usual you'll see the percentage of fragmented files, as well as the usual mosaic-style drive map. There's also a "Files" tab listing every fragmented file. Detailed statistics on offer include figures for free space fragmentation, the maximum free space block and more, and the program uses all this data to produce a figure estimating the impact on your system performance. Perhaps most significantly, though, these reports aren't just isolated one-offs any more. A Statistics tab records your Performance, Fragmentation, Free Space Fragmentation and Fragmented Files figures, then plots these on graphs allowing you to see how they've changed over hours, days and weeks. So if some change in your system is resulting in more file fragmentation, then this will be quickly highlighted, so you can dig deeper and try to uncover the cause. Defrag strategies One of the most important features of any defrag tool is the number of methods it provides to optimise your drive, and Disk Defrag 4 Professional doesn't disappoint here: it's packed with useful options. In a click or two you can choose to defragment an individual file, a folder, a single drive, or all your local drives, for instance. You can decide to organise your files by their last access or modification time, so for example a file you changed yesterday might be moved to the fastest area of your hard drive, while one you've not touched since 1997 may be safely exiled to somewhere less speedy. There's an option to take more advanced control of this, and define exactly what should go in the faster or slower areas of your hard drive. By default, for instance, folders, system files, frequently accessed documents and Registry files are optimised for speed, while temporary files, large and multimedia files, archives and temporary files are assumed they can be moved to the slow lane, but if this doesn't suit your needs then it's all up for change. Interestingly, Disk Defrag Professional 4 can also use Windows own prefetch data to optimise your file layout. Windows already uses this to determine which files need to be loaded when your PC boots and applications start, so having your defrag tool relocate those files to a faster area of the drive makes a lot of sense. And there are all kinds of other useful tweaks on offer here. You can set up the program to delete temporary files before it begins defragging, for instance. You might instruct it not to bother defragmenting particular file types at all. There are options to reduce future fragmentation by leaving a small amount of free space after specified file types, for instance, and the list goes on. But don't think this means the program has become bloated, or complex. At its simplest, you can set up the appropriate actions through a Defrag Wizard, which just asks you a few basic questions, chooses the appropriate settings and schedules a defrag job for you. And even if you want to exploit every possible option on offer, it's still relatively straightforward. Once you've combined your preferred settings into a custom profile, this can be set as your default, and Disk Defrag Professional will then carry out your wishes at a click, nothing else to worry about. Resource management You'll often want a defrag job to finish just as fast as it possibly can. We'll tell you more about Disk Defrag Professional's performance when we review it, but our first impressions are that it's every bit as fast as previous editions, and the way you can configure its scans also suggests there's plenty of opportunity to optimise the program for speed. It's often better if a defrag tool can simply minimise its impact on your system resources, though, so it continues to run in the background, but without you really noticing. And Disk Defrag Professional includes a new resource management scheme to make this happen. These allow you to define, say, the maximum percentage load the defrag job is able to create on your CPU. You're able to limit the amount of traffic it causes on your hard drive. If you're using Disk Defrag Professional on a laptop, then you can reduce its impact on battery life by only allowing defrags when you're connected to the mains. And an excellent Applications section enables you to define programs which you really don't want interrupted, at all. So if you launch some heavy-duty game, say, then any active defrag job will be postponed until it's closed. Configure a profile to suit your needs and you can greatly reduce the impact Disk Defrag Professional has on your PC, then. Although of course the other factor to consider here is the scheduler, and that, too, has many useful options. In particular, the program's Auto Defragmentation feature can step in to defrag your drive whenever the system is idle. And of course you can also schedule defrags to run unattended at particular times, or when your PC boots, allowing the program to defragment system files which would otherwise be locked. Pro vs Free We've covered the Disk Defrag Professional 4 basics, then, but there's actually much to the program: it has considerable depth. After analysing a disk it displays a standard-looking drive map, for instance, but this isn't just a static chart - it's actually a dynamic clusters inspector. Click one of the squares and you're able to view the disk clusters and files it contains, very handy when you're trying to understand what's causing fragmentation in the first place. There are special algorithms and support for VSS (shadow copy)-enabled and SSD drives, too. The latter, Auslogics say, is particularly useful as it can prevent extra shadow copies being taken due to file movement, as well as reducing the chance of overwriting previous VSS snapshots. And once you're happy that all this power delivers exactly what you need then you can even have Disk Defrag Professional 4 fully integrate with Windows, and replace the standard defrag tool. (The old executable remains there if you should ever need it, this just means that if you choose the Defrag option from Explorer, Auslogics Disk Defrag Professional 4 is the program which will appear.) Put this all together and Auslogics have created a very impressive high-end defrag tool, highly configurable and packed with professional options: we're already looking forward to reviewing the finished version, to see how it performs in real life tests. If there's no way you're going to buy a defrag utility, though, don't worry, there will be still be a free version. It'll have lots of limitations, leaving out most of the defragmentation strategies, with far weaker reporting and scheduling options, and very limited resource management, amongst other issues. But it also looks to us like it'll be better than the free Disk Defrag 3, and of course we'll also tell you more about that, including a detailed review, when it's released in January.

Tweaking performance is something that virtually every Windows user is interested in. There are various degrees to which performance tweaks can be applied, starting with simple things such as ensuring that there are not too many programs configured to start when Windows launches, to more advanced options such as tinkering with services and the registry. Whether you are a newcomers to system tweaking or a more seasoned user, turning to a third party tool – rather than doing all of the legwork yourself – not only helps to safe a good deal of time, but also helps to reduce the risk of making mistakes that could have disastrous consequences; edit the registry incorrectly and you could find that you have an unbootable system on your hands. There is a seemingly endless number of programs available, both free and paid for, that claim to make it easier to tweak your computer or deliver better results than manually tweaking. IOBit Advanced SystemCare 6, available as a Free or commercial Pro version, is an all-encompassing utility that aims to satisfy the demands of the power-user whilst remaining accessible to those who are less experienced. Things get off to a very warm and friendly, hand-holding start with the appearance of a helpful, although perhaps not strictly necessary, introductory tutorial. The app and its interface are really fairly self-explanatory, but it’s still nice to find that absolute beginners are being catered for. Simple or Expert? Switching to Expert mode gives you access to a far wider range of options to open up tweaking opportunities We’ve mentioned that this is an app that is suitable for beginners and experts alike, and it’s easy to switch between Simplified Mode and Expert Mode – by default the app works in simplified mode after installation, so anyone new to the world of tweaking is not going to be thrown in at the deep end and left wondering what to do. Taken at face value, Simplified Mode is a very dumbed down version of the app. Whether this is a ploy to make the Expert mode more appealing is open to debate, but being presented with a single Smart Scan button when working in basic mode is going to quickly drive most users to switch to Expert mode. In Simplified Mode it is still possible to access individual components of the tweaking suite by clicking the Quick Settings link at the bottom of the screen, but this is tucked out of the way at the bottom of the screen so that the option to switch modes is more prominent. Getting Tweaked For the remainder of this review, we’re going to concentrate on the Expert component of the app and it is almost inconceivable that this is not where most users will end up heading – it is where the guts of Advanced SystemCare are to be found after all. Once you are working in the more advanced mode, there are three sections of settings to work through: Care, Toolbox and Turbo Boost. In the Care section you’ll find twelve different collections of settings ranging from privacy checking to registry cleaning. Each of these individual components can be added to the overall scan which can include as many or as few of these options as you like. Sadly, there are no additional options to be found in each section, they are either enabled or disabled. Or at least that is that way it seems to start with. While it may appear that the only option available to you is to select or deselect a component, hover over a section heading and a previously hidden settings icon will appear. Here you can access the main settings screen from which you can configure the options you would like to use. Although this does enables you to set up the program to your liking, it is not the most intuitive aspect of the program. This may be expert mode, but it is no excuse for poor interface design. Free vs Pro There are plenty of free tweakers to choose from, and IOBit Advanced SystemCare 6 adds to this number, However, there is also a Pro version of the program available that gives you access to a number of additional tools and options. The claims associated with upgrading to the Pro edition of the app are slightly vague – doubling of PC speed, tripling of internet speeds, and cleaning the registry ‘more deeply’ – but the decision to part with some cash will unlock a many  more options. It is difficult to say whether the Pro version of the program is worth the money. There is no denying that it helps to make life a little easier when it comes to tweaking, but there are no ground-breaking settings revealed that a true ‘pro’ would not be able to change anyway.  However, autocleaning options and scheduled boot-time optimization are certainly useful. Away from the main program interface, integration with Windows means that some options can be accessed from the right click menu in Explorer. For example you can right click a file and have it securely deleted from your hard drive according to the settings you have already configured. Summing Up Tweaking tools are something of a difficult breed of software to judge. The results that can be expected will vary massively from one computer to another. What cannot be denied is that IOBit Advanced SystemCare 6 Pro certainly helps to make life easier. You do not need to remember where all of the important settings are to be found in the registry or which area of the Control Panel you need to visit to optimize different aspects of your computer.

If you've spent some time exploring the world of free PC paint programs, then you'll know that most of them look much like any other application. There are menus here, ribbons there, toolbars, flyouts - it's all very familiar, if not particularly likely to inspire your creativity. The OpenGL-based SpeedyPainter, though, takes a different approach. It strips the interface down to the basics, reducing all the usual distractions to the absolute minimum, and instead concentrates on delivering a clean, simple and straightforward painting experience. At first glance this may look just too limited. The program arrives in the form of a 1.87 MB download, for instance, so you probably won't be expecting the longest of feature lists. And the opening interface doesn't exactly look polished; it's just a few buttons, sliders and other controls, scattered around the edge of the painting area. Get started, though, and you'll find SpeedyPainter offers far more capabilities than you might expect. Wacom tablet support means you can vary stroke size and opacity with your pen pressure, for instance. A versatile colour picker can pop up at your cursor position for quick and easy access. There are rotate, flip and crop tools; you get layer support and a selection tool; there's even a perspective grid overlay to help you produce more realistic images. These tools have plenty of functionality, too. So you could just draw a crop rectangle and apply it, just as you'd expect. But you can also rotate it, or pan the image underneath, to help you select the exact area you need. (And just wait until you see what you can do with the Perspective Grid…) But this is rarely, if ever confusing, because as you choose individual options, so the program will display simple on-screen prompts to explain what you can do. While more detailed help on the various hotkeys is only ever a click away. And once your masterpiece is complete, SpeedyPainter won't just save the image. It also captures each stroke as you work, and can export the results as an AVI file (480p, 720p, 1080p), a great way to see how the picture was produced. Don't take our word for it: browse the official gallery and see for yourself.

If you frequently wail and gnash teeth at the prospect of opening two separate windows whenever you want to copy one file to another, than a dual-paned file manager is a must. They’re not exactly thin on the ground, but if you’re a multi-platform user you might prefer to stick to a single solution that will run across all your computers, be they Mac, Linux or Windows. The solution in question is an open-source tool called muCommander 0.9.0, which has just received its first major update in over two years. muCommander works like many other file managers – it provides a dual-paned window giving you quick and convenient access to both source and destination folders, and allows you to bookmark favourite locations for easy navigation. Want a single, multi-platform file manager for all your computers? muCommander could be just what you're looking for. The app also allows you to connect to various remote sources via networking protocols, FTP/SFTP, NFS and HTTP, while built-in tools like a text editor and file packer/unpacker also boost its usefulness. muCommander does fall down slightly in some areas, however. It’s hampered by the fact its built on Java, which restricts certain functionality. You can’t tap into your OS’s native “Open With” commands for example; instead, you have to grasp the basics of XML to craft your own custom list using the built-in text editor. You also have to take care when opening files and apps – certain types (including OpenOffice documents and all OS X apps) need to be launched by selecting the Open Natively command. If you can get past these niggles, however, then you’ll find a potentially useful file manager lurking. And the latest release – the first since February 2010 – adds some useful new features and improvements too. The headline new feature is tabbed browsing support – when browsing, simply right-click a folder and choose Open in new tab to create a multi-tabbed pane. The built-in text editor/viewer has also been improved – it can now wrap long lines, plus display line numbers. There’s also a new quick list pop-up for root folders – simply press [Alt] + [5] to display it. Other improvements include better display of long filenames, with the beginnings and end shown to help with identification, plus the implementation of natural file ordering, so all symbols come before digits. muCommander 0.9.0 is a free, open-source download for Windows, Mac and Linux. It requires Java 5 or later.

If you're looking for an image backup tool right now then EASEUS Todo Backup 1.1 will get the job done quickly, easily, and for the very reasonable cost of nothing at all. If you're in no hurry, though, it may be worth waiting a month or two. EASEUS has just released the first public beta of Todo Backup 2.0, and it's a major upgrade, packed with professional features, that will take the program to a whole new level. You're no longer restricted to creating hard drive images, for instance.  The program is also able to back up files, either by type (documents, emails, music, pictures, videos and so on), or any that you select directly.  Support for incremental backups improves performance, while a highly flexible scheduler can run your chosen backup jobs whenever you like. Todo Backup 2.0 now creates bootable USB and CD/DVD recovery environments, that can restore the last backup if your hard drive becomes corrupted. A new Universal Restore option helps you restore a backup to a different PC. A Snapshot feature allows you to take a quick backup of your current system state, and restore it quickly and easily: it's similar to a hard drive image, but faster and doesn't require as much hard drive space. An enhanced set of tools includes options to clone or wipe the partition or drive of your choice. And this is all presented in a new, cleaner and simpler interface, which should ensure you'll find all the new features with the minimum of hassle. Put it all together, then, and Todo Backup 2.0 has an impressive list of capabilities that would cost you a significant amount of money elsewhere.   But for the moment, at least, you can try it out for free: just visit the Todo Backup 2.0 beta testing site to download your copy.  But hurry: this beta will expire on December 31st 2010.

After the furore surrounding Mozilla’s recent announcement that it’s to place its email client, Thunderbird, into an “extended support release”, the launch of Thunderbird 15.0 Beta 1 was always bound to attract attention. And it's certainly turning heads, thanks to the official debut of a redesigned user interface. Thunderbird 15 Beta 1 also debuts two noticeable new features in addition to the revamped user interface, extending the global search tool to cover the Chat module, plus implementing the “do not track” feature that debuted in Firefox last year. The most obvious change in Thunderbird 15 will be the implementation of a new, curvaceous user interface called Australis. This introduces itself immediately with the rounded tabs at the top of the screen, but extends to redesigned lines, a repositioned toolbar and categorized filters, and has the effect of bringing the user interface up to date. The Australis user interface makes its debut in Thunderbird 15 Revamped user interface aside, there are two notable new features. The unified global search now covers the chat module - which supports Facebook, Twitter and Google Talk among others - while the "Do not track" option introduced in Firefox has been added to Thunderbird too. This option – accessible from the Web Content tab in the Security section of Thunderbird’s Options screen – is of less relevance to email users, but may stop some emails from tracking the user, but only if they’ve signed up for the voluntary code of practice. Going forward, Mozilla plans to split Thunderbird into two separate code bases, with Thunderbird ESR being maintained by Mozilla and Thunderbird being handed over to the open-source community to develop further. Thunderbird ESR will be updated every six weeks for stability and security only, and its changes rolled into whatever new build of Thunderbird has been developed in that timeframe. It means that while the long-term future of Thunderbird is uncertain, in the short to medium term it remains a viable email client for its 20 million user base. Thunderbird 15.0 Beta 1, which installs over the top of any existing stable Thunderbird release, is available now as a free, open-source download for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Just as with your home, it is a good idea to have a spring clean of your computer from time to time. By sifting through the buildup of files that accumulates on your hard drives, you can easily free up significant amounts of disk space and help to boost not only performance but also privacy and security. Anyone looking to automate the process of clearing up the crud that accumulates over can turn to CCleaner to delete file usage histories, remove superfluous registry entries and more. CCEnhancer 3.0 is a free third-party extension to the program that provides support for even more applications. In all, CCEnhancer adds support for more than 500 extra programs, vastly extending the already impressive capabilities of the original program. In practice, there is very little involved in taking advantage of CCEnhancer. Launch the app and you will be presented with a window featuring a Download Latest button; click this and the latest support definitions will be downloaded for you, in much the same way as downloading virus definitions for your AV software. CCEnhanceradd support for more than 500 apps to CCleaner You should find that the program is able to automatically locate your copy of CCleaner and apply the definition updates for you, but if you have installed to a strange location, you may find that you need to point it in the right direction. CCEnhancer 3.0 offers improved support for the portable version of CCleaner and the fact that CCEnhancer itself does not require installation means that it can be easily copied onto the same USB drive as the main cleanup tool and kept up to date whenever needed. If you feel like getting your hands dirty, you can even go so far as editing the winapp2.ini file yourself to add support for even more programs. This may not be an option that appeals to everyone, but software developers wanting to cleanup after their own programs, or anyone using little known titles has this available to them. It’s worth pointing that that CCEnhancer is in no way associated with CCleaner, so compatibility cannot be guaranteed if the main program is updated in the future – it is still an impressive tool worth adding to your maintenance toolkit. You can find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the CCEnhancer 3,0 review page.

Hot on the heels of Mozilla pulling the latest stable release from its download servers after discovering a security vulnerability, Firefox 16.0.1 FINAL has now been released. Those who had already upgraded to version 16 should upgrade automatically now the updated version is available. Full details about the vulnerability can be found here. In the meantime, Mozilla has updated all pre-release versions of the popular cross-platform, open-source browser to versions 17 (Beta), 18 (Aurora) and 19 (Nightly/Elm/UX) respectively. Once again, confirmed changes are thin on the ground, although the recent release of the “Elm” branch of Firefox Nightly, previewing the new Modern UI-based version of Firefox for Windows 8, is a noteworthy addition. Firefox 16.0.1 FINAL Without a doubt the recommended release for most users, as it’s the most stable build out there – now the security patch has been implemented, at any rate. Initial desktop support for web apps, VoiceOver accessibility features for OS X, extra developer tools and enhanced garbage collection performance to prevent freezes and performance lags mark out this release. The first beta of Firefox 17 shows nothing new to mark it out from version 16. Firefox 17.0b1 Beta Despite the intriguing nature of the new features being linked to Firefox 17 Beta(which installs over the top of any final build), you can't currently preview any of them in this early beta, suggesting the possibility some or all might slip back to Firefox 18. The most exciting development is “Firefox Social Integration”. This is Firefox’s attempt to better integrate social networking tools into the browser. Planned changes include integrating social notifications and a share/recommend service into the main toolbar, plus developing a dedicated sidebar for news feeds, tickers, buddy lists and so on. Also planned is a docked or floating window for integrating chat – including video and audio. Also undergoing development in version 17 is an improved display of Location Bar results as the user types words into it – some changes have already been implemented, and can be found in version 16 of the browser, namely no separator line and search terms highlighted in grey rather than marked in bold. Features still being developed – and not yet visible in v17 – include larger icons, the ability to delete search results by hovering the mouse over them and the removal of the scrollbar. The final new feature under development in version 17 is the addition of extra features to the HTML Tree Editor, which currently only allows users to delete nodes via the Page Inspector’s HTML pane. Performance improvements are the name of the game with Firefox 18. Firefox 18.0a2 Aurora Firefox’s “alpha” build installs alongside either Firefox Final or Beta, allowing you to test it without affecting day-to-day browsing. Settings are shared between both builds, however, so install and use with caution. The major development planned for Firefox 18 is the implementation of IonMonkey, a Modern JIT Compiler for JavaScript. In layman’s terms, it means faster performance on JS-based websites, and testers have reported improvements of between 7-26% in Firefox 18 over version 17. Also allegedly landing in version 18 is the inline PDF viewer. This has actually been present – but switched off – in versions of Firefox 15 and later, but could it finally be ready for primetime with this release? If you’re not willing to wait, follow our guide to switching the default inline PDF viewer on in your current version. Note that Firefox 18 won’t hit FINAL release until early January, one week later than originally scheduled. The panel-based downloads manager continues to evolve through the Nightly channel. Firefox 19.0a1 Nightly Firefox’s Nightly channel gives users access to code hot off the press, and again it installs alongside other Firefox builds. It’s incredibly unstable, updated frequently and you’re just as likely to see new features disappear as appear. The panel-based downloads manager, which is hidden by default in earlier builds of Firefox, can be tested in full in Nightly. It’s still not ready for primetime thanks to continued development, a summary of which can be found here. The download panel is accompanied by plans to redesign the tab strip at the top of the Firefox window through emphasising the current active tab more and creating what Mozilla developers describe as a “soft, smooth and streamlined” appearance. Also at the planning stage is an addition to the user interface that makes it clear when a plug-in – such as Adobe Flash – is responsible for the browser appearing to hang. This tweak will also give the user the opportunity to kill the plug-in right away if they wish. Firefox Metro UI Preview For more on Mozilla’s project to produce a version of Firefox that will run in the Modern UI portion of Windows 8, check out our news story here. In summary Which version of Firefox should you try? The stable build remains our recommendation for the vast majority of users. The lack of notable new features prior to Firefox 19 confirms once again Mozilla’s stated plan to shift focus away from the desktop platform in the latter half of 2012, but also makes it hard to recommend users try anything but Firefox 16 FINAL…

Adobe Labs has released an early preview version of a new Flash conversion programme, codenamed Wallaby. Wallaby Technology Preview is designed to convert Flash-based content into HTML5 quickly and easily, and will be of most interest to web developers conscious that any Flash content they provide is not visible with Apple’s mobile range of iOS devices, including iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Wallaby runs on both Windows and Mac platforms, and does all the hard work of conversion for the user: just select your Flash file, click Convert, choose an output folder and wait for the process to complete. At this early stage in its development, Wallaby is only capable of converting selecting Flash content, including images and FrameSets, fills and – partial support only – layers. It’s currently incapable of converting both embedded and hosted video as well as sound, making it of limited use at present. Flash content is converted into HTML5-standardised files – HTML5 is the first revision of the HTML format to directly support animations and video without requiring external plug-ins. Like Wallaby, however, HTML5 is still not quite ready for primetime, and at the present time is only supported by Webkit-based browsers, of which there are currently just two mainstream titles: Google Chrome and Apple Safari. Adobe Wallaby Technology Preview is available for both Mac (OS X 10.5 or later) and Windows (XP or later), and requires Adobe AIR, which is included as part of the installer file.

Evernote for Windows 4.3 is designed for sharing

The Evernote Corporation has announced a major update for the Windows version of its note-sharing tool. Evernote 4.3 is a noteworthy release for the introduction of a number of tools for sharing selected notes via email, social networks including Twitter and Facebook, and via the web. Evernote 4.3 also makes it possible to share notebooks with selected individuals, plus access other notebooks shared by other Evernote users. In addition to this, there are a number of other improvements, feature additions and bug fixes. The standout feature in Evenote 4.3 is its sharing options. Individual notes can be shared by clicking a new Share button and choosing the appropriate option from the dropdown menu. When sharing via Twitter and Facebook, the posts are auto-filled, but editable prior to sharing. It’s worth noting that sharing makes the note in question public. Right-click a note and choose Sharing to change this behaviour. A new shared tab makes it possible to select which notebooks are to be shared with others. Once selected, click Manage Sharing to select which notebooks to share, and how they’re shared. Only Evernote Premium users can make notebooks available for editing. Other new features Those writing to strict word counts will appreciate another new feature: select View > Show Note and Word Counts and a word and character count will appear in the bottom of the note panel. It’s also possible to now perform a Find and Replace within a specific note – press [Ctrl] + [H] to do so, while there’s also improved indentation handling within the text editor. Other minor changes include improved note syncing for Firefox web clips as well as better default font selection depending on the user’s language preferences. These are accompanied with “lots and lots of bug fixes”. Evernote 4.3 is available now as a free download for PCs running Windows XP, Vista and 7. A Mac version is also available, and Evernote plans to add the sharing options to this platform in a future release.

Ashampoo 3D CAD Professional 4 available - at a budget price

Ashampoo has released 3D CAD Architecture 4 and 3D CAD Professional 4, the latest editions of its interior and exterior design tools. And both programs are improved this time by the extended Project Wizard, now an even easier way to start your new design project. Choose your basic building floor shape, enter the dimensions, specify the number of floors and your preferred roof design and that's it: even if you've never used this kind of tool before, you can have the core building shell created within a few moments. The programs also benefit from enhanced 2D support. Extra 2D symbols can add more detail to 2D views, for instance. There's support for 2D angle measurements and dimensioning. And there's now automatic area and length calculation for roofs, eaves, verges and more, while you can run extended area and volume calculations on any other areas of your design that you might choose. Your design can be dressed with textures, custom lighting, plants and more to add extra realism Perhaps most surprising of all is the new shadow simulation option. Specify your geographical position and a time range and the program will track shadow distributions for you, perfect if (for instance) you're looking to sort out the best position for a photovoltaic system. 3D CAD Professional 4 contains all these features, and its previous extras (2D DXF/ DWG import/ export, for example, and a built-in window designer). But this release in particular provides more flexibility in terms of roof design. There's support for circular roofs, for example, and roof openings. You can customise roof extensions, merge individual roofs, create roofs with corrugated sheets, and more. If you're generally interested in this kind of tool, though, the real news here is that Ashampoo is making both program available at a budget price for a "short time". Ashampoo 3D CAD Professional 4, normally $299.99, is currently on offer for $119.97; 3D CAD Architecture, normally $79.99, is now a very minimal $29.99 Are the programs for you? They don't have the vast object libraries used by some of the competition. You don't get 50 types of leather chair, for instance - the interior design side is more about creating a general impression than trying to reproduce your living room with 100% accuracy. If that's not a problem, though, the programs are still capable of some great results. They offer a vast amount of functionality for your money - particularly while this offer is running - and trial versions of both 3D CAD Architecture 4 and 3D CAD Professional 4 are available now.

Sixteen popular downloads you may have missed this week

Sadly we can't feature every new and updated application, but that doesn't mean that some of the apps we haven't covered aren't worth rounding up. There are a number of interesting applications that are worth some investigation and we've rounded up some of these apps put live during the last week. doPDF 7.2.363 is a powerful free tool you can use to produce a PDF from just about any Windows application. Instead of sending it to your printer, simply print to the doPDF device. Creating a PDF is the ideal way of distributing a document for download, by email or for commercial printing. Just about any printer will take a PDF as your master. If you regularly switch between screen resolutions (for example, using your laptop and then connecting to an external monitor), then you'll also know it's a real pain when desktop icons are automatically re-positioned to fit the smaller resolution. DesktopOK 2.51 is a simple tool which enables you to pre-program your desktop layout for each screen resolution. No manual re-positioning required. There's also a 64-bit version. After Adobe announced Creative Suite 5.5, individual applications were also updated, including Adobe Dreamweaver CS5.5, Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5 and Adobe InDesign CS5.5. Updated to enable you to design content for an iPad and similar devices. Sysinternals Suite 2011.05 is a comprehensive collection or all the Sysinternals applications whilst one of these apps, Process Explorer 14.11, is a more advanced Task Manager replacement. If you're keen to view the latest web browser developers, Google Chrome Canary 13.0.754.0 will give you the latest pre-developer build almost every single day. Use with caution though. Opera "Next" v11.50 is the Opera equivalent. Since when did developers encourage users to test alpha versions? Firefox 5 Beta 1 is due on May 17th. Kaspersky TDSSKiller 2.5.0.0 was updated this week and is a popular free tool that will enable you to detect and remote an installed rootkit. Complements your existing security software. Talking of security software, Comodo Internet Security 5.4 was updated this week, along with Comodo Firewall 5.4 and Comodo Antivirus 5.4. SUPERAntiSpyware 4.52 Free was updated, whilst we wait for the final release of v5, due soon. Notepad2 4.1.25 is a more powerful version of Notepad with automatic syntax highlighting and much more. There's also a 64-bit edition. We also recommend XnConvert 1.02 (32-bit) and XnConvert 1.02 (64-bit) which will handle and process multiple images.

TeamViewer 8 FINAL promises "visibly improved" performance, adds new features

Less than a month after it debuted the public beta, German developer TeamViewer GBMH has released the first stable version of its cross-platform, free-for-personal-use remote support, presentation and file-sharing tool, TeamViewer 8.0.16447 FINAL. The latest release combines new features – including multi-touch gestures, Mac Retina displays and the ability to record both sound and video during a remote session – with "visibly improved" performance improvements. Windows 8 users, who can also launch TeamViewer sessions via a full-screen app in the form of TeamViewer Touch for Windows 8, will find the new build supports many of the new OS’s new features, from full multi-touch support to Windows 8-specific features such as the Charms bar via the tool’s remote control toolbar. Access all your remote computers - PC and Mac - with the help of TeamViewer 8. In a similar vein, the OS X build adds support for Retina displays, plus allows users to set up a personalised TeamViewer Quick Support for Mac session via their TeamViewer account. Version 8 also adds support for scheduling online meetings quickly via a dedicated button in Microsoft Outlook, the ability to record sessions – including sound and video as well as VoIP – and the ability to remotely hear system sounds on the target computer. Those with paid-for licenses can also demonstrate video in real-time during an online presentation. Also added is the ability to print documents locally from a remotely connected machine. TeamViewer 8 FINAL also debuts a brand new web-based TeamViewer Management Console for administering support teams – this comes with an integrated TeamViewer Web Connector for connecting via the support member’s browser. The new console also supports remote account logout and will automatically log out of the remote system if the connection is closed or interrupted for greater security. TeamViewer 8.0.16447 FINAL is available now as a free-for-personal-use download for Windows, Mac and Linux. Also available are TeamViewer Touch for Windows 8, plus TeamViewer Remote Control for iPad and iPhone.

Sysinternals updates Autoruns, Process Monitor

Sysinternals has announced updates for Autoruns and Process Monitor, as well as the release of a new command line tool, Registry Usage. The Autoruns tweaks are the most significant. In particular, all reports now include a timestamp for executable files, folders or Registry keys. And so if you browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run in the Everything view, say, you'll now see a timestamp which tells you when that Registry key was last modified. Of course, while this is a welcome addition, it does highlight one current failing of the program: you can't simply click a column header to sort entries by date (or any other field). Perhaps that will be next. New timestamps tell you when system changes were made Elsewhere, Process Monitor gains support for Windows 8 file information query types, as well as having a minor bug fix in its tooltip handling. And the new Registry Usage (RU.exe) is a simple command line tool which give you details on the size, value and subkey counts of a specified Registry key. To try the program out, just open a command line at the folder where it's located, and launch it with a suitable path (short and long forms are supported: "ru hkey_current_user" or "ru hkcu", for example). After a pause you'll see a report listing the number of values and keys within that path, and their total size in bytes. Other options allow you to itemise subkeys, as well as control the number of levels the program will browse, as well as exporting the details as CSV for easy reference and analysis later. And, as usual, launching Registry Usage without any command line switches will display information on the program's various options.

Create animated GIFs from YouTube videos with Any GIF Animator

From a Captain Picard facepalm to a dancing Homer Simpson, there's an animated GIF for every occasion. Which is one reason why they're still regularly used in emails, forum posts, on web pages and so on. (Although another is probably compatibility: unlike more modern technologies, such as HTML5 or CSS3, animated GIFs work just about everywhere.) If you're tired of reposting one of the standard animations, though, why not create a new GIF of your own? It's surprisingly easy. Any GIF Animator imports just about any video or YouTube clip, and once you've zoomed in on the section you'd like to use, can have a quality animated GIF ready and online in just a few seconds. After a quick installation (no adware, but the program does ask to install Media Player Codec Pack Lite) you're able to import your first video. The program can open a wide range of formats (3GP, ASF, AVI, DAT, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, MPEG, RAM/RM/ RMVB, TS, VOB, WEBM, WMV), and it'll also download YouTube clips if you just provide the appropriate URL. An embedded media player then allows you to browse through your video clip, find and mark the section you'd like to convert. Oddly, you can't step through the movie in frames - the smallest increment is a tenth of a second - so you're not able to be as precise as we'd like. But otherwise this is a fairly simple operation, and you'll quickly have your core clip ready. The program allows you to tweak and customise your animation in many ways If you'd like fine control over your animation then the good news is that Any GIF Animator provides lots of configuration options. So you can set the GIF's size and frame rate; crop the image; tweak saturation, brightness and contrast; add a text caption, choose the best dithering method, set the animation type (looping, direction) and more. But if you're not sure whether you need any of this, or are just in a hurry, then you can just accept the default settings - they work well, most of the time. And when you're happy with the clip, all you have to do is click "Convert to GIF" and Any GIF Animator will process your chosen video, create an animated GIF version, and upload it to the AnyGif server, where you'll be given the URLs you need to share the clip with others. One very obvious issue here is that the program doesn't offer you a choice about uploading animations - it just does it. And your GIF will then immediately be visible to anyone who visits the site, so bear that in mind before you create anything of a, well, personal nature. (We'd also urge caution if you're looking for something family-friendly; the program itself is fine, but view what others are creating on the website and you'll find plenty of porn.) Perhaps most annoyingly, Any GIF Animator doesn't even provide an option to save a local copy of your animation. If you want to do this then you'll need to either allow it to be uploaded, then save it from your browser, or make a copy of the temporary file the program creates - see C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Any GIF Animator, for instance, or search your system for out.gif. There's a lot to like about Any GIF Animator, then, and you can use it right now to produce quality animations. The program also has some significant annoyances, though, and it really needs a local save option to be added very soon.

Test-drive Apple’s new Messages Beta app for OS X

Can’t wait for the summer release of Mountain Lion, the next version of OS X? If so, then you might be interested to learn that while developers are getting their hands on a preview version of Mountain Lion, humble users like you and me can get a glimpse into one of its new features right now. That’s right, if you’re a Lion user who’s nicely updated to OS X 10.7.3, you can try out a beta of Apple Messages, Mountain Lion’s successor to the iChat application. As its name implies, Apple Messages Beta is exciting for Apple aficionados because it brings iMessage to the Mac platform. This popular IM/chat tool, which was introduced in iOS 5 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch last year, can now be extended to your Mac ahead of schedule by installing this beta. Messages Beta will overwrite your iChat application, but don’t worry – it contains all of the functionality of iChat as well as support for iMessages. Oh, and you can get shot of it easily enough too – if you decide it’s not for you, or the beta proves more buggy than it’s worth, just open Messages and select Messages > Uninstall Messags Beta to dump it courtesy of Software Update. Apple Messages Beta brings iMessage support to your Mac. So, what does Messages Beta bring to the party for Mac users in terms of iMessage support? Everything you’ve come to expect from the iOS version, of course: the ability to start a conversation on your Mac or portable device, then continue it on another – all while keeping everything neatly in sync (the downside is that your Mac will chime in with your other portable devices every time a message is received, but hey ho). You can, of course, share all of kinds of stuff – including photos, video, contacts and more – through iMessages and you can also launch a FaceTime conversation direct from the app. OK, this simply launches the FaceTime app on your Mac, but again with the ho and the hey. All of this functionality exists on top of existing features found in iChat. That means the iChat Theater (now renamed Theater) remains, as does the support for selected third-party IM accounts, namely Google Talk, Jabber, AIM and Yahoo! Sadly, while your buddy lists for these accounts remains neatly in place, there’s no such contacts directory for iMessage – you have to remember your friends’ Apple ID to initiate a conversation. Everything works as you’d expect it to – look out for the iMessage-like speech and thought bubbles, and the ability to recall previous conversations (and delete individual ones) from the left-hand pane. Oh, Messages window is persistent, so you can leave it open while getting on with other work. Apple Messages Beta is available now as a free download for Macs running OS X Lion 10.7.3 or later. The final version will appear in OS X Mountain Lion on its release this summer.

Quick Review: MAGIX Music Maker 2013

Programs that aim to simplify complex processes are often doomed to failure. You would think that any software designed to bring music making to the masses – music making being something that people dedicate their lives to – would fall at the first hurdle. But MAGIX is a company that has been producing accessible software for many years, and the Music Maker range is one of its flagship products. MAGIX Music Maker 2013 picks up form where its predecessor left off, but whether you are someone who has used a previous version of the program or you are new to the range, there is a lot to explore in this surprisingly power music creation software. The latest incarnation of the program is very much an evolution of an established product, and while it has little major in the way of new features, it feels like a natural progression. Loops & Samples As you would expect from any program of this ilk, you are provided with a library of loops and samples that can be used either as the basis for creations of your own, or used to add embellishments to your compositions.  Compared to previous versions of the software, this particular release has a slightly redesigned interface but there is nothing particularly different really – there is now more scope for personalization. While in the past you have been able to work with up to 64 audio tracks, you are now able to work with up to 99. This opens up a new dimension of opportunities in some respects, but at the same time it could be seen as an exercise in numbers. It is not just the number of tracks that has been increased, there are now also more samples and loops in the library for you to work with. With more than 3000 sounds to choose from, the new search facility is a welcome addition.  There are also more instruments than ever before, including a wider range of realistic Vita 2 instruments. Of course, any music app is going to be judged to some extent by the range of effects and instruments that it provides users with, and MAGIX Music Maker delivers on this front. But usability and performance are also very important factors – MAGIX is renowned for its attention to detail in terms of ease of use, and the 2013 version of the program also make great steps forward to help improve overall performance. The system requirements make it clear that the software cannot be used on older hardware, but even on fairly average hardware it performs pleasingly well. 2013 improvements There is no denying that there are numerous other more powerful tools available, tools that offer greater flexibility, a wider range of samples and instruments, a better selection of effects and a more professional look. But this is not what MAGIX Music Maker is about. While there is obviously a firm focus on creating as great a sound as possible, this is a piece of software that is all about opening up new opportunities to a wider audience. Even someone who would class themselves as musical inept still has some idea of what sounds good – even if only to themselves – and MAGIX Music Maker 2013 enables you to make the most of whatever talents you may have, providing you with the tools you need to take things to the next level. It is possible to use the program to dip your toes in the water of music creation, but it is important not to get disillusioned by results if things are too impressive to start with. While it is possible to create something that sounds half decent by just dropping a series of samples onto your workspace and playing around with a range of effects, you really do need to get a little more involved if you want to get the most from the program. This is not a piece of software that is going to work miracles – it will not transform the musically inept into a maestro, but if you have a slight musical leaning, it will enable you to experiment with ‘real’ and electronic music in ways that you might not otherwise have considered. As is becoming increasingly common with software that is undated manually, this is a release that owners of the previous version could live without. For newcomers or anyone with a slightly more aged edition installed, it is still good value for money.

Review: AVG Internet Security 2013

AVG Internet Security has always been a likeable security suite, with all the core components you need to keep your PC safe: antivirus, firewall, spam filter, browsing protection and more. But of course it's not perfect, and so it's good to see AVG Internet Security 2013 doesn't waste time introducing irrelevant new features, and instead largely concentrates on addressing many fundamental issues. The new release aims to accelerate scanning performance, for instance, reduce memory consumption, cut your boot time and improve core modules like the firewall and spam filter, which sounds great to us. After a hassle-free installation, though, the first big change you notice is the new and very Windows 8-like interface. The Windows 8 look is cropping up everywhere at the moment... The suite's core functions are represented by five green tiles - "Computer", "Web Browsing", "Identity", "E-mails", "Firewall" - and clicking any of these provides quick access to useful options. (You can turn a module off, tweak its key settings, and so on.) You also get buttons to scan your system, or update Internet Security 2013. If you forget what any of these do, then hovering the mouse cursor over them will display a helpful hint. Or, if you prefer the old ways, the Options menu provides access to most functions in just a couple of clicks. This is all presented in a rather plain Metro-style design, which ( judging from the hate generated by Windows 8 ) certainly won't appeal to everyone. We soon got used to it, though, and on balance found the new interface to be clean, straightforward and easy to use. Antivirus Scanning with AVG Internet Security 2013 is a straightforward process. Clicking Scan Now launches a check of your full system; the "Scan specific files or folders" option can examine just a few key locations (your Windows and Program Files folders, say) for improved performance; and a flexible scheduler will automatically run your preferred scan types at a convenient time. Scans can be launched with a click from AVG's desktop gadget Whatever you're doing, accuracy proves reasonable. Independent testing by AV Comparatives shows the AVG 2012 engine wasn't the best around, with false positives an issue, but it still detected 96.4% of threats in their last file detection report. And our own smaller-scale tests with Internet Security 2013 also delivered acceptable results, with the program locating and removing 93% of the test malware samples. Scanning performance has improved this time, too, with the program taking only 8:20 to complete its first Whole Computer optimisation scan of our test PC (that's around 680,000 objects scanned), and this typically fell to around 1:20 for repeat scans. And, conveniently, there's no need to run a separate scan for rootkits any more: Whole Computer scans will detect and remove them, along with regular malware. If there's a small problem with this it's that AVG Internet Security 2013 is powered by lots of processes - we counted at least ten - and we found RAM use to be a little above average, ranging from 40-55 MB depending on what you're doing. The suite made only an average impact on boot or application launch times, though, and even while scanning we were able to continue using other programs, so on balance we think most users won't experience any significant performance issues. Browsing protection Removing viruses is great, but avoiding them is even better, and so AVG Internet Security 2013 uses a couple of technologies to try and prevent you ever reaching dangerous or malicious websites. The first involves installing its own browser toolbar, as well as setting your browser search URL to AVG Secure Search (both steps can be avoided by choosing the Custom Installation option during setup, if you prefer). Use either method to search the web and icons will be added to your results, warning you of dangerous sites. And because you'll often click on links in other places - a document, email, your Facebook stream - AVG's LinkScanner Online Shield also scans online content before it's displayed to make sure it's safe. AVG Internet Security can detect some malicious sites - but not enough That's the plan, anyway. In reality, the warning icons scheme seems like a backward step. Previously AVG's Search Shield would highlight dangerous sites in results from all the main search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo!, Altavista, Baidu); now, you only see them if you use AVG Secure Search, or the search box in AVG's toolbar (which itself can only be installed in IE, Chrome and Firefox). And AVG's antiphishing accuracy isn't great, either. AV Comparatives found the Internet Security 2012 engine only detected 61.3% of test sites (that ranked it 15th out of 18 tested), and the 2013 release similarly picked up little more than half the malicious URLs in our own tests. Of course the protection doesn't stop with LinkScanner. If you did click on a link which tried to download something malicious, then the antivirus module would step in, and its much greater accuracy means you'd probably be safe. And there is more to AVG's toolbar than the search box. It can also give you a detailed report on the safety of the current page; AVG's Do Not Track automatically blocks ad networks which collect personal information; and assorted bonus features include a weather forecast and internet speed test. But for all this, the antiphishing accuracy issues do represent a weakness in the suite, and this is an area AVG really needs to improve in future. Other tools AVG's spam filter proved straightforward to use, integrating neatly with our Outlook 2010 installation (although it also works with most other email clients). And it was surprisingly accurate, too, raising last year's feeble 55% detection rate to a much more impressive 88%. The down side? In part AVG seem to have done this by making the settings more aggressive, so the program also falsely flagged a few legitimate emails as spam. These were at least only corporate mailing lists, though, no personal emails were affected, and if you have similar problems then there are plenty of tweaks and training options you can apply to improve the situation. The firewall has also been notably improved, properly stealthing our PC's ports online, and automatically (and correctly) deciding which programs should be allowed to make internet connections without ever once hassling us with an inappropriate alert. PC Analyzer can identify the junk cluttering your PC. Fixing it? That might be a problem Elsewhere, AVG has for some reason dropped the System Tools, where you could previously monitor your startup programs, open network connections, IE extensions, Layered Service Providers, and so on. It's a shame - they were useful - but there are plenty of similar free third-party tools, if you need them. And there's still the annoyance of PC Analyzer, which will scan for system clutter, issue a report and display a "Fix Now" button. Which, when you click it, turns out to be essentially an ad for PC Tuneup: you can fix your current problems only once, then you have to buy the full program. Like most security suites, AVG Internet Security 2013 has a few issues. The below-average antiphishing detection was disappointing, and we'd like to see RAM use fall a little further. For the most part, though, the suite represents a solid and welcome step forward. It's easier to use, faster, less resource hungry than it was and a little more accurate, with a smarter firewall and a spam filter which compares well with many commercial tools. And whether you're an AVG fan or just looking for a new security suite, it's worth taking the trial build for a spin to see just what it can do for you.
