CyberLink PowerDVD 12 debuts new format support, enhanced iOS/ Android apps, social media support, integrated music store

CyberLink has today released the latest version of its flagship media player, PowerDVD 12 - and the build sees major steps forward in the formats it can handle, and the way the program works with mobile devices, social media and more. PowerDVD 12 now supports playing back all the main video formats, for instance, including MK3D, MKV (H.264), FLV (H.264), WTV, 3GP and 3G2. A new focus on audio means the program can also handle cinematic quality and lossless sound formats: DTS-HD 7.1, Dolby TrueHD 7.1, OGG, FLAC and more. And PowerDVD's old ability to view your digital photos is now extended by native RAW format support. There's obviously not quite so much room to develop with DVD and Blu-ray playback, so the only major change here is to CyberLink's TrueTheater technology. As well as upscaling videos to HD quality, removing noise, stabilising shaky videos, enhancing details and colours, it can now convert all 2D media to 3D: that's Blu-rays, DVDs, videos and photos. You can now buy content from the built-in store, as well as play it back PowerDVD 12 also includes enhanced DLNA support, so it's much better at streaming media around your home. Social media improvements mean you're able to connect to and browse YouTube, Facebook and Flickr content from within the program.  And enhanced mobile device support sees you able to stream content to your iPhone, iPad or Android devices, while a comprehensive Sync module makes it easy to set up detailed rules deciding how media should be synchronised with your Android device. There's no shortage of power, then, but to keep things straightforward you're able to access most of your content via a simple tree and a thumbnail browser. You can access your media library via several different views - grid, album, list - to help you keep control, and smart search tools make it generally easy to locate the content you need. And if for some reason you still don't have all the media you'd like, the company are hoping you'll rectify this by shopping at PowerDVD's integrated CyberLink/ 7digital music store, where over 17 million 320K DRM-free tracks await your attention (as long as you're in the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy or Spain, anyway). Buy here and you'll be able to store your music in the cloud where it can be accessed from anywhere, by up to 5 devices. As previously, PowerDVD 12 is available in three editions. The first, PowerDVD 12 Ultra, is the high-end build which includes everything we'd mentioned here, and is available for $99.95. PowerDVD 12 Pro omits the mobile device apps, and the new DLNA Digital Media Renderer and Controller. You'll still get a DLNA-compliant player and server, though, so this could be the sensible choice at $79.95. And PowerDVD 12 Standard goes much further, also omitting Blu-ray and 3D playback, TrueTheater's "convert anything to 3D" option, Android Sync, the DLNA Media Server, and HD Audio (TrueHD 5.1 and DTS-HD 5.1): list price is $49.95. The Standard version is a little too stripped-down for our liking, but take your pick: there's a trial version available, so see how it works for you.

Easily switch applications with 7+ Taskbar Numberer

Keyboard task switching under Windows normally means repeatedly pressing Alt+Tab or Win+Tab, cycling through your running applications until you find what you need. But this is a more direct way. If you see you required program is, say, the 7th button on the taskbar, then pressing Win+7 will launch it directly. When your taskbar is cluttered then of course it may take a moment to figure out exactly which number any particular button might be. But that's where the free 7+ Taskbar Numberer comes in. The program can add number overlays to each of your taskbar buttons, helping you identify them at a glance. If this is sounding familiar, then you're right, we covered the first version of the program last year. But the latest build has two interesting improvements. First, it introduces an option to hide the numbers until the Windows key is pressed. If you didn't like the number overlays then this may appeal, as normally your taskbar will look just as it always did. Number overlays help you see an icon's taskbar position at a glance (Unfortunately the numbers will also reappear whenever you press the Windows key for some other reason - Win+R to open the Run box, say - which can be distracting, but on balance we think it's a useful addition.) And second, 7+ Taskbar Numberer is now fully compatible with Windows 8, which may help you launch regular Windows programs from the Start screen. If you're at the desktop, say, having 7+ Taskbar Numberer will help you see that Firefox is, perhaps, button 9 on the taskbar. If you later want to return to Firefox from the Start Screen, there's no need to use Alt+Tab, or click the desktop tile, then the Firefox taskbar button: just press Win+9 and the browser will reappear immediately. (Win+number is a standard task switching hotkey, of course, but 7+ Taskbar Numberer just makes it a little easier to use.) One small down side here is that getting 7+ Taskbar Numberer set up and working as you'd like still requires a little work. There's no automated setup, so you'll need to save the program somewhere safe, set up a shortcut, give it the correct command line arguments, and so on. It's not difficult, though - the program's readme.html file has everything you need - and on balance 7+ Taskbar Numberer makes it notably easier to switch to and launch running and pinned applications.

Test-drive Office 2013 for up to 180 days with Office Trial Extender 1.0.0.7

DiSTANT X has released Office Trial Extender 1.0.0.7, a new build of its tool for legally extending the trial period for Microsoft Office 2010 or later to a maximum of 180 days. The new version adds support for the latest Office 2013 release, renames itself Office Trial Extender and ensures all its files are digitally signed. The tool works by resetting your Office trial to 30 days, and can be used a maximum of five times, giving you a theoretical maximum trial period of 180 days – with caveats, as we discuss below. Now Microsoft is in the process of switching to a subscription system – Office 365 – with its products, it’s important to understand there’s a particular procedure you need to follow should you want to road-test Office 2013 for up to 180 days. The key fact is that you need to obtain a trial product key rather than sign up using your Microsoft Windows ID. Don’t worry, our download link for Office 2013 takes you to the correct part of the Office web site where you can obtain this serial code by email. Test drive Office 2013 (and Office 2010) for up to 180 days. After installing and activating Office, use it as usual until your trial period runs out. When it does, install Office Trial Extender if you haven’t already and launch the program, clicking Yes when prompted to restart it with administrative privileges. Click the Rearm button for your trial version of Office, then read the warning. Make sure all instances of Office aren’t running – any open documents may be corrupted by the process – then click Yes to reset your trial to 30 days. Remember, Office Trial Extender doesn’t add 30 days to your current trial period; instead, it resets it back to 30 days. That means to get a full 30 days extra you need to wait until the trial expires before using it. Office Trial Extender can be used up to five times in total to extend the subscription to a maximum of 180 days, which should be ample time enough for you to decide whether or not to purchase the full version, or invest in an Office 365 subscription. Office Trial Extender 1.0.0.7 is available now as a freeware download for Windows. Also available are Office 2013 Professional Plus and Office 2010 Professional as free trial downloads.

Change the way Firefox 3.6 handles new tabs

In previous versions of Firefox, when opening a new tab - whether by right clicking an existing tab and selecting the New Tab option, pressing the Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut, or opening a link in a new tab - it would always open at the far right of the tab bar. With the release of Firefox 3.6 this behaviour has changed to mimic that of Internet Explorer. Now when a new tab is opened, it appears immediately to the right of the currently selected tab. To many people this will make a degree of sense as it means that when opening links from one page in new tabs, they are grouped together in a fairly logical fashion. But the new method of handling tabs is not to everyone's tastes and it can be changed by adjusting a hidden setting. If you take a browse through Firefox's Options screen, you will find no obvious setting that can be changed to alter tab behaviour. This is because the way tabs work is controlled by a setting which is more deeply hidden in the browser configuration files. In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter. A warning screen will appear; this rightly warns that changing settings on the screen that follows could have adverse effects on the browser, but the tip that follows is perfectly safe so click the 'I'll be careful, I promise!' button. Scroll through the list of options that is displayed and locate the one labelled browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent. Notice that this Boolean value is currently set to its default value of false, but by double clicking it you can change it to true. You will now find that new tabs are treated in the way they used to be.

5 quick and easy Windows system shortcuts

One of the most effective ways to speed up your computer is to change the way you work. Why, for example, click the Start button and select All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer when you can open it by pressing the [Windows] + [E] keys together in a fraction of the time? In this mini feature, we’ve dug out five quick tips that will help you save time when accessing key folders and hidden system tools. Familiarise yourself with these, and you’ll save time whenever you use your computer. 1. Use the Run dialogue box One of the quickest ways to get around your system is to use the Run dialogue box, which you’ll find on the Start menu in Windows XP; Vista and Windows 7 users can add this box to the Start menu by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Properties, then click Customize, tick Run command and click OK. Alternatively, just press the [Windows] + [R] keys together – much quicker! 2. System shortcuts There are numerous shortcuts you can type into this Run box to access hidden parts of your system. Here’s 20 of the best – just type them in and press [Enter] or click OK: . (period) – open your personal user folder %AppData% - opens the Application Data (XP) or Application Data\Roaming (Vista/Windows 7) folder %LocalAppData% - opens the Application Data\Local (Vista/Windows 7 only) calc – open the Windows Calculator charmap – Character Map cleanmgr – Disk Cleanup control – open Control Panel folder control appwiz.cpl – open Add or Remove Programs (XP) or Program and Features (Vista/Win7) Control Panel control color – open Appearance tab of Display Properties (Window Colour and Appearance dialogue box in Windows 7) control powercfg.cpl – Power Options Control Panel control userpasswords2 – access hidden User Accounts Control Panel devmgmt.msc – Device Manager dfrg.msc – Disk Defragmenter msconfig – System Configuration Utility notepad - Notepad regedit – Registry Editor sendto – Send To folder (XP only) services.msc – Services Management Console wmplayer – Windows Media Player 3. Add Favourites Bar to XP The Favourites Bar in Vista and Windows 7 is one of those often overlooked features that speeds up the way you navigate your PC for favourite folders in Explorer or via Open/Save dialogue boxes - just drag and drop favourite folders into this list to gain access to them from any Explorer folder. XP users jealous of this feature can get something similar by installing FindeXer - read the instructions before you download. 4. Quick access to the System Control Panel Right-click the Computer/My Computer icon on the desktop or on the Start menu and select Properties – job done. 5. Add permanent clickable shortcuts Right-click the desktop and choose New > Shortcut. Type in any of the shortcuts noted in tip 2 and click Next. Give your shortcut a suitable name and click Finish for a desktop shortcut to that tool. Drag this or pin it to the Taskbar or pin it to the Start menu for even easier access.

Preview any tab quickly and easily in Firefox with Tab Scope

If you’re the kind of person who regularly runs Firefox with multiple tabs open, you might find keeping track of which website is where challenging. In those circumstances, Tab Scope for Firefox is the perfect add-on for your needs. Tab Scope for Firefox allows you to preview any tab by rolling the mouse over it, just like the Aero Peek feature in Windows Vista and 7. A small pop-up preview of that tab’s contents will appear, allowing you to quickly locate the tab you’re looking for. But while that’s impressive in itself, there’s more: not only does Tab Scope provide you with some handy shortcuts for that tab via its preview window, it’s also infinitely customisable too. Keep the mouse pointer held over a preview window and you’ll see a toolbar appear at the top of the page – use this to navigate or refresh the contents of the tab without opening it. Right-click the window to double its size, making it easier to read the content within, while you can also convert the tab into an App Tab or open the Group Tabs window directly from here too. If Tab Scope looks promising, but doesn’t quite fit perfectly in with your needs, take a trip to its Options screen, where you can do just about anything to it you like: set the default preview window size and the magnification level to apply when right-clicking the window. Set the preview window to appear above or to either side of the tab as opposed to beneath it, and then switch to the Advanced tab for even more fine-tuning, with the ability to configure how each mouse button (left, right and middle) will work when clicked. It all adds up to an incredibly useful extension, efficiently written (it’s only 56KB in size) and one we’re happy to add to our list of top Firefox extensions. Tab Scope for Firefox is a free extension suitable for any flavour of computer running Firefox 3.6 or later.

Find out just how a PC has been used recently with NirSoft's LastActivityView

NirSoft has announced the availability of LastActivityView, a new tool which displays details of recent user actions and events on almost any PC (it runs on Windows 2000-8, both 32 and 64-bit editions). And while that doesn't sound too exciting, wait - it turns out to be surprisingly useful. The program logs the applications you've launched recently, for instance. The files you've opened or saved (from the standard Windows Open and Save dialogs, anyway). The folders and files you've opened in Explorer, the software you've installed, and the networks you've accessed. It also details your system startups and shutdowns, user logons and logoffs, software hangs, blue-screen crashes and more. And, importantly, LastActivityView doesn't need to be running to record this information. Rather, it assembles it from Registry keys and their "last modified" times, your event logs, prefetch files, crash dumps and more. The program produces a surprisingly detailed report on your recent activities As a result, if a friend or family member has asked you to help with a problem on their PC, you don't have to rely on them remembering every key detail of what they were doing at the time. Just launch LastActivityView and it'll show you the application they'd just installed, the programs they'd run and lots of other relevant information. And if you want to check how your kids are using their PC, for instance, the program could also be handy. No need to install some bulky monitoring tool, just run LastActivityView and you'll see when the system is active, the applications they're using, the files they're browsing, and more. There are a few issues here. System cleaning tools may wipe away some of the records used by LastActivityView, for instance, reducing the amount of information you see. And as the author points out, the accuracy of some records may be reduced if the user or software makes particular changes to the Registry. It's hard to complain about a portable tool which crams so much functionality into its tiny (99KB) executable, though. And on balance LastActivityView is yet another NirSoft winner, an excellent way to uncover what's happened on a PC over the past few hours and days.

Review: MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab MX

Audio editing tools are almost on a par with video editing programs when it comes to the potential complexity you can expect to find in such software. But MAGIX is a company that is famous for producing software that is incredibly simple to use, making even complicated tasks accessible to the average computer user. Things are no different with MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab MX, the latest addition to the company’s MX range of titles. As you might expect from reading the software’s title, this is a program can be used to clean up audio recordings you have made. The clean-up process is wizard driven and this helps to keep things as simple as possible. If you are unfamiliar with audio editing tools, there is no need to worry about looking for complicated options or wading through unintelligible terminology. As you would expect from wizards, those found in Audio Cleaning Lab MX are goal-oriented; if you have recorded a cassette that if suffering from unwanted hiss, just select the ‘Clean tape sound’ wizard, while selecting ‘Restore vinyl sound’ enables you to improve the sound quality of 12” and 7” you have recorded. The process of digitizing your music collection – who doesn’t have a number of old LPs and cassettes lying around that are just begging to be popped onto an iPod? – is one that can be time-consuming.  MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab MX includes all of the tools you need to help keep things as simple and quick as possible. It does not matter whether you have already recorded the audio you want to work with to your computer as this is an option that is available from within the program. There are then a number of options available to you.  You can use the automatic cleaning assistant to analyze your recording and it will quickly determine which clean-up filters need to be used – declicker, decrackler, denoiser and dehisser – before giving you the option of applying the necessary tweaks. Alternatively, you can manually work through the clean-up process step by step, choosing which filters should be put in place and to what extent. There are also a number of presets that you can choose from – such as restoring average quality vinyl recordings – but if you would like to get really hands-on, you can use the main program interface to choose between an even greater range of filters. Noise removal When it comes to removing clicks, crackles and tape noise, you can choose the level to which these effects should be applied – if you apply too strong a filter, it is possible that you will also filter out sounds that you actually want to keep, but at the very least it is likely that if applied too strongly, it will become obvious that effects have been applied. For the perfectionist, there is also the Spectral Cleaning tool. This enables you to remove one-off noises such as coughs, and while this can have some impressive results, it is a little fiddly to use and may be off-putting to those unfamiliar with audio editing. Create the perfect sound for your recording with Audio Cleaning Lab MX In some respects, calling the app Audio Cleaning Lab is something of a misnomer. While it is true to say that the main function of the program is to enable you to remove unwanted sounds from your recordings and otherwise improve audio, it is also possible to use the software to add special effects such as echo and reverb. If you have not already recorded digital versions that you would like to work with, the program can be used for this task as well. When it comes to recording audio cassettes, you have the option of recording at double speed – this obviously assumes that you have the ability to play at double speed – to help reduce the time required to digitize your music. You can also use the app to perform other forms of audio editing such as cutting out unwanted sections of sound, or rearranging clips into a different order. This has a number of uses. You may have used your phone or other equipment to record interviews on the street, only to discover that traffic noise or wind is a little distracting. MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab MX can be used to filter out unwanted noise, but it can then also be used to cut out lengthy pauses and remove other unwanted parts. Whatever you use the program for, when you have finished with your editing, you can then save the resulting project as a .WAV or .MP3 file. Depending on how you intend to use the audio, you may prefer to export the audio track as a file in a different format, and you can choose from AAC, WMA, Ogg and more. MAGIX Audio Cleaning Lab MX produces some very impressive results and there are plenty of touches that help to make this as accessible and as easy to use as possible. It is highly recommended tool if you have substandard audio that you would like to be able to make use of without having to spend hours with complex editing software.

The Bat! 5.0 email client released, promises better stability and security

RITLabs has released a major update to its email client. The Bat! 5.0 features a complete rework of the program's intercommunication mechanisms, which significantly improves the way it access mail via IMAP. Not only does this make the program more stable and secure, but it also allows for the implementation of new search capabilities. The Bat! 5.0 also boasts several new features, including folder information panels that display dynamically updated information about the currently selected mail folder, and a “smart” hints function that pops up relevant options when the mouse is pointed at specific parts of the program. Also new in version 5.0 is an expanded URL Manager. Earlier versions of the software only allows users to block images by specific host or links; version 5 allows images to be blocked by various criteria, including sender and recipient, giving it the same capabilities as enjoyed by The Bat!'s Sorting Office. Version 5.0 is also capable of generating and sending QR codes, which allows it to encode data into a small picture for sending to mobile devices, which can subsequently be decoded back into text, such as email addresses, links and phone numbers. It also supports the new Intel Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) Instructions Set” to speed up the AES algorithm used in TLS and S/MIME encryption on computers running supported Intel processors. The Bat! Is available in two editions - Home ($35) and Professional ($45) - with trial versions available for each. Version 5.0 is available as a free update to all Bat! 4.1 users, but a new key will need to be purchased for all subsequent updates, with version 5.1 planned for July 2011 – existing users will be able to upgrade with a 30 per cent discount on the normal purchase price . Those who purchased a key on or after 23rd December 2010 will find their key is valid for all 5.x releases as well as version 6.0.

Take GIMP to the next level with GIMP Extensions for Windows

GIMP is the most powerful free graphics editor around - but you can extend it even further with the right extensions. You'll need to find them first, of course, because GIMP doesn't have any built-in mechanism to show you what's available. But if that's too much trouble then you could always install GIMP Extensions for Windows, which gives you more than 50 in a single package. You'll get GIMP Paint Studio, for instance, which equips the program with additional brushes, patterns, palettes and more. Plugins include Adaptive Contrast Enhancement, BIMP (Batch Image Manipulation Plugin), Cartoonizer, Focus Blur, GIMP Mask, Image Registration, Liquid Rescale, PAL & VHS, and Save for Web. The Extensions pack provides more than 100 new filters and effects Bundled scripts include AnimStack, Fake HDR Effect and Split Studio 3. While GIMP FX Foundry adds more than 100 new options all on its own. There's more file format support (APNG, DDS, JPEG XR, WebP). And you even get animation options via GIMP Animation Package. (The full list is available at the GIMP Extensions page.) You don't have to install all of these, fortunately. If you have some already, or just want to decide for yourself, then the setup tool allows you to select the extensions you need, and the ones you really don't. Whatever you've chosen will then be added to your system with a click. Launch GIMP and you'll probably find it's now quite slow to start. Much of this is a one-off, though, as GIMP Extensions' new tools are installed and initialised. And once the program appears, you can begin exploring its extra powers - the new FX-Foundry menu is a great place to start.

Kaspersky debuts Anti-Virus, Internet Security 2012

Russian security company Kaspersky has dropped the beta tag from their Anti-Virus 2012 and Internet Security 2012 products, launching both today. And while there are no revolutionary changes on offer, Kaspersky have provided more than enough general improvements and enhancements to justify giving the programs a closer look. Significant low-level changes sees both Anti-Virus and Internet Security 2012 offering strong protection even earlier in the boot process, for instance, making it harder for rootkits to modify the operating system, and blocking attempts by malware to disable the antivirus engine. More visible modifications include the new interface, which makes it easier to monitor your security status, and track completed and ongoing scans. The tweaked gadget ensures you can launch many tasks directly from the desktop, and the support for touchscreens is a welcome addition. Kaspersky report that their cloud protection has been significantly improved, while new heuristic technologies do a much better job of detecting phishing websites. Kaspersky 2012 range given a brand new user interface The System Watcher can now roll back even more actions taken by an application, very useful for repairing damage caused by malware (or many other programs which might have adversely affected your system, in fact). And of course there's still the lengthy list of features which were available in previous versions: enhanced spam filter and parental controls; a smart firewall which keeps alerts to a minimum; a virtual keyboard to bypass keyloggers; sandboxing, vulnerability scans, privacy options, Windows troubleshooting tools and more. All this functionality doesn't appear to come with a performance penalty, though, quite the opposite. Kaspersky also claim that they've reduced the impact of both packages on system performance, and our initial tests seem to confirm that: they're not exactly lightweight, but neither program had any significant effect on our test system's boot or application launch times. There's plenty to like about the new range, then; they're an interesting mix of power and ease of use that makes them suitable for just about every level of user. Sounds appealing? Then take a look for yourself - 30-day trials of both Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 and Internet Security 2012 are available now.

MediaPortal 1.3.0 unveils HD-friendly new look

Open-source Windows media-centre tool MediaPortal 1.3.0 has been released after an extended period in Release Candidate mode. Version 1.3.0 debuts a fresh new skin, optimised for widescreen full HD displays, and also adds support for unencrypted Blu-ray disc playback. The new build also adds official support for Windows 8, improved settings dialog within MediaPortal itself and an option to install LAV filters, ensuring playback of most media formats. The new Titan skin is the first default skin optimised for a widescreen, 1080p HD display. The developers – Team Titan – have also created the Titan Extended extension, which adds support for many community plugins, including its own Titan Skin Updater for implementing future changes and bug fixes to the skin. MediaPortal 1.3.0's new Titan skin is optimised for widescreen displays. MediaPortal 1.3.0 also improves its built-in skin engine, which will allow developers to offer multiple themes for each skin, including font, colour and layout changes. Also added is a new menubutton control, support for user-definable skin settings and custom colouring. Version 1.3.0 is also the first release of MediaPortal to offer any form of native Blu-ray support, with support for menus and extras as well as playback of the main feature, although only unencrypted discs are currently supported. The new build also offers a fix for stuttering video playback through the inclusion of the MediaPortal Audio Renderer (MPAR). It aims to simplify the process of keeping video and audio in sync, and in addition to offering perfectly smooth playback will allow users to speed up the video stream to counter lower screen refresh rates. The new skin works with add-ons including the MP-TVSeries plug-in. When first installed, MediaPortal 1.3.0 offers to install the LAV Filters extension by default – this plug-in includes most of the audio and video codecs required to play even obscure media files, and supports major video acceleration standards including DXVA, Intel QuickSync and NVIDIA CUDA. All codecs and filters can also be configured directly from the MediaPortal Configuration interface. Speaking of configuration, version 1.3.0 also integrates almost all available MediaPortal options within the main program’s own Settings section to minimise the need to exit the program and access the Configuration tool. The My Videos section has also been extensively reworked, with view screens for Folders and Database, movie and actor information screens and a configuration + scan option. Text file support for videos has also been added, allowing users to place a simple text file with the IMBid number next to its corresponding movie file. MediaPortal 1.3.0 is available now as a free, open-source download from Team MediaPortal for PCs running Windows XP SP3 or later.

Everything.me Launcher Adapts to What You’re Doing & Where You Are

Unlike iOS, Android devices can be very easily customized without the need to jailbreak or root the. This means that there is an ever-growing market in third-party launchers that enable phone and tablet users to try out a variety of new ways to access the apps they have installed on their device. While cosmetically different and packed out with a range of extra features, most launcher are generally fairly similar, but this same cannot be said of Everything.me which adapts itself according to what you are doing and where you are. The idea is simple. Launching apps and accessing information is now seen as being the same thing. Looking for a recipe you have stored in an app you use? Type ‘recipe’ and a list of corresponding apps will show up. In addition to this, you’ll also be shown a list of related websites so you can check out other recipes online. Breaking down, or at least blurring, the barriers between local apps and online services is an interesting approach. Everything.me dynamically adapts to what you are doing There’s also scope for tailoring search results to your current location. Look for restaurants and you’ll be able to find out what is nearby. As well as ensuring that you have easy access to the information you’re looking for, Everything.me also changes the appearance of your phone according to what you’re doing. Perform a search for ‘football’ and your background will change to the NFL logo. A launcher that dynamically adapts to what you’re doing can take a little getting used to; it feel strangely unintuitive to start with, but it doesn’t take long to become second nature. It’s really just a matter of retraining that memory muscle. But there is another option available in the form of smart folders, and these act as a sort of hallway house between dynamic homescreens and a more traditional folder-based launcher. Select a category – such as a shopping – and any apps that you have that fall into this category will be automatically added to the folder along with a list of associated online resources. Create a ‘social’ folder and you’ll find that Fourquare, Twitter, Facebook etc are all automatically grouped together for you. Everything.me is currently in beta but can still be downloaded from Google Play.

Locate a wireless internet connection on the move with Wi-Fi Finder for iOS and Android

If you have an iPhone or an Android phone, the chances are that you frequently connect to the internet using a 3G connection. The same is true for some iPad users, although there are more wifi-only Apple tablets in circulation. Whether you are working with a device that only offer wifi connectivity, you are out of range of a 3G signal or you just need faster internet access, there are numerous reasons you might want to find a wireless internet connection when you are out and about, and this is something that Wi-Fi Finder can help with. The app is available for iPhone, iPad and Android, and native versions have been released for each type of device. If you do have a 3G connection, you can use the app online and check in the area for the availability of wireless networks. The database of hotspots includes both free and paid for networks and you can use filtering to track down particular types of establishment offering wifi - you might want to avoid hotels for instance. A map and contact details is provided to help you get within range of the network and with a database covering over 140 countries, Wi-Fi Finder is great for use at home and abroad - it is certainly worth installing before you head off on holiday or on a business trip. This in itself is useful enough, but the app can also be used in offline mode. It makes sense that at least some of the times you are trying to find a wireless internet connection, you may well be without an internet connection of any sort. If you find yourself in this predicament, the offline database can be used to search for available networks - this can also be useful if you are planning a trip and want to check where you will be able to get online on your journey. Even if you only use it a couple of times, this is an app that deserves your attention. Find out more and download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the Wi-Fi Finder for iPhone/iPad and Wi-Fi Finder for Android review pages.

Zip Art creates gorgeous abstract images, no artistic ability required

Some people seem to be born with great artistic talent, able to produce amazing work with just a few strokes of a pencil or some well-placed dabs of paint. If, like the rest of us, you're not so lucky, though, you're probably going to need to help to produce anything which deserves to be called "art". And that's where Zip Art comes in. The program was created by light sculptor, scientific artist and former physicist Paul Friedlander, in an effort to help anyone - even the totally talent-free - express their creative potential. And while, as a software developer Friedlander is clearly a great artist, Zip Art is an interesting way to produce appealing abstract images, often in just a few seconds. Launch the program and you'll probably be a little confused by the odd interface, which ignores convention and does things very much its own way. Fortunately the core of Zip Art is very straightforward: just choose a drawing tool - waves, curves, rectangles, and a whole lot more - then click and drag with the mouse. And immediately you'll be generating colourful abstract designs, and shaping them however you like. Just moving and twisting your mouse is enough to produce intricate and colourful designs Despite Zip Art's small size (the core executable is a mere 506KB), there are plenty of options here. You can change the colour palette, background and pen width, for instance. You get various customisations to help tweak the program's algorithms, and it can even record your efforts, replaying them later as an animation. And what might you be able to create? There's a small gallery on Friedlander's site which will give you a general idea, but even our brief experience with the program suggested most people will probably be able to produce something much better. If you like this kind of abstract imagery then there's a lot of fun to be had here. You'll probably have to fight through more than a little frustration first, though, because the program's interface is something of a mess. Zip Art doesn't use regular toolbars, buttons, help menus or anything else, choosing instead to generate everything itself, and initially it all feels quite strange. Persevere, though, and you'll soon be feeling more at home, producing spectacular abstract designs with the absolute minimum of effort.

Review: SyncMyCal

Google Calendar is a fantastically useful tool as it makes it possible to maintain a calendar of appointments and access it from any computer with an internet connection. But the online service does have its limitations, and many people prefer to use a dedicated personal information manager such as Outlook to edit calendars. Google Calendars can be imported into Outlook, but there is no way to make edits and keep the two in sync. This is where SyncMyCal can help. The program plugs into Microsoft Outlook and there are versions available for all editions of Microsoft's PIM from 2002 onwards, including 64-bit editions. SyncMycal allows for two way synchronisation of appointments between Outlook and Google and you can choose to  synchronise in either direction. For example, you may always edit you calendar in Outlook and want to upload these changes so your Google Calendar shows your appointments when viewed online - conversely you may always edit appointments in Google calendar, but you could opt to download your calendar to Outlook to serve as a backup. But two-way synchronisation is how most people will use the tool and two different modes are available to choose how synchronisation should proceed if an appointment is found to have been edited in two different places. SyncMyCal can make use of Outlook categories to filter precisely what should be synchronised, and category information can also be used to synchronise data to one of multiple Google calendars. If you have made use of multiple categories in Outlook and want to make use of them online, you will need to overcome the problem of Google Calendar's lack of category support by configuring additional online calendars. This can quickly lead to the creation of several calendars which in turn means that multiple synchronisation jobs need to be set up - this is a simple enough process, but care needs to be taken to ensure everything runs smoothly. The Lite and Pro versions of SyncMyCal are identical apart from a few things. The Pro version of the program can synchronise any range of dates (rather than the 7 day limit found in the lite edition), and Outlook and Google contacts can also be synchronised. Automatic synchronisation is also available in SyncMyCal Pro - this coupled with the unlimited date range make the Pro version well worth the money. SyncMyCal is a wonderfully useful tool which helps you to get the best of both worlds - the accessibility of online calendaring, and the additional features available by using Outlook to maintain your offline calendar.

Bluetooth OnOff allows for easy Bluetooth access in iOS

Something that irritates many iOS users, and drives a large number of them to go as far as jailbreaking their phones and tablets, is the fact that Apple is so strict about what apps are able to do. The guidelines for getting into the App Store mean that it is not possible for any app to replicate an existing feature of iOS, not access system settings in any way that Apple deems inappropriate. Despite this, Bluetooth OnOff has found its way in to the App Store, providing easy access to Bluetooth settings. Due to battery draining, it is not a good idea to leave Bluetooth enabled when it is not being used. With this in mind, it is strange to find that in order to switch Bluetooth off, Apple makes users jump through a series of hoops in a process that takes several taps. Bluetooth OnOff is a simple little utility that reduces this to a one or two tap process so if you need to enable Bluetooth for a quick gaming session, you can do so in around a second. Enable or disable Bluetooth with Bluetooth OnOff Bluetooth OnOff can be used in one of two ways. The first option is to launch the app and then manually select the option to enable or disable Bluetooth, but by adjusting app settings you’ll find that there is a better option available. The app can be set up so that Bluetooth is switched on or off as soon as the app is launched, reducing the amount of time it takes to switch settings even further. The app features a built in chatting option, but in all likelihood this is just a facade to help get a hady utility through to the store. If you’ve been frustrated by Apple’s restrictions but don’t fancy the idea of jailbreaking your iOS device, this may just be what you have been waiting for – and at this low price you have very little to lose in testing it out for yourself. You can find out more about the app by paying a visit to the Bluetooth OnOff review page.
