Review: SyncMyCal

Google Calendar is a fantastically useful tool as it makes it possible to maintain a calendar of appointments and access it from any computer with an internet connection. But the online service does have its limitations, and many people prefer to use a dedicated personal information manager such as Outlook to edit calendars. Google Calendars can be imported into Outlook, but there is no way to make edits and keep the two in sync. This is where SyncMyCal can help. The program plugs into Microsoft Outlook and there are versions available for all editions of Microsoft's PIM from 2002 onwards, including 64-bit editions. SyncMycal allows for two way synchronisation of appointments between Outlook and Google and you can choose to  synchronise in either direction. For example, you may always edit you calendar in Outlook and want to upload these changes so your Google Calendar shows your appointments when viewed online - conversely you may always edit appointments in Google calendar, but you could opt to download your calendar to Outlook to serve as a backup. But two-way synchronisation is how most people will use the tool and two different modes are available to choose how synchronisation should proceed if an appointment is found to have been edited in two different places. SyncMyCal can make use of Outlook categories to filter precisely what should be synchronised, and category information can also be used to synchronise data to one of multiple Google calendars. If you have made use of multiple categories in Outlook and want to make use of them online, you will need to overcome the problem of Google Calendar's lack of category support by configuring additional online calendars. This can quickly lead to the creation of several calendars which in turn means that multiple synchronisation jobs need to be set up - this is a simple enough process, but care needs to be taken to ensure everything runs smoothly. The Lite and Pro versions of SyncMyCal are identical apart from a few things. The Pro version of the program can synchronise any range of dates (rather than the 7 day limit found in the lite edition), and Outlook and Google contacts can also be synchronised. Automatic synchronisation is also available in SyncMyCal Pro - this coupled with the unlimited date range make the Pro version well worth the money. SyncMyCal is a wonderfully useful tool which helps you to get the best of both worlds - the accessibility of online calendaring, and the additional features available by using Outlook to maintain your offline calendar.
