German developer Moritz Wette has released Lion Designer 3.0, a brand new, redesigned build of his popular Mac desktop customisation tool. Lion Designer makes it possible for users to quickly change backgrounds for various OS X tools like Launchpad and Mission Control, plus restore the colourful Finder sidebar icons among other tweaks. Version 3.0 introduces a new graphical user interface and Example Manager for quickly downloading replacement background images. It also fixes numerous bugs, extends compatibility to OS X 10.7.4 and later, and adds Retina display support. Lion Designer 3.0 uses a simple point-and-click interface to allow the user to quickly and effortlessly change background images for a range of OS X tools, including Launchpad, Mission Control, the Dashboard and Login screen. Other customisable items include the login icon, Launchpad Container background, Finder Sidebar Icons and various animations. Users can also toggle desktop icons and the User Library folder between hidden and visible. Customise various aspects of your Mac desktop with Lion Designer. For those lacking their own background images, a new Example Manager tool provides options for download a selecting of example images from five categories: industrial patterns, nature wallpapers, Apple wallpapers, sunset wallpapers and wood patterns. Once downloaded, the user can drag these items on to the Load Image field, from where they can change a specific background by clicking the appropriate Change button. Also provided via the View menu is a Theme Manager, allowing users to quickly build up and switch between a collection of backgrounds and icons. There’s also a handy “Reset to Lion Default” button, should the user wish to undo all of Lion Designer’s changes. It all adds up to a simple to use and handy tool for those wishing to add a little colour to the Mac desktop. Lion Designer 3.0 is a donationware download for Macs running OS X 10.7 or later.

Ghisler Software has announced the release of Total Commander 8 Beta, a new version of its shareware file manager tool, designed to improve on the rather basic options offered by Windows Explorer. Version 8 is notable for introducing the first dedicated 64-bit build of Total Commander, designed to run exclusively on 64-bit operating systems. Total Commander 8’s other changes are more minor in scope: a handful of new minor and tweaked features coupled with a raft of bug fixes. Version 8 is not designed to be run on production machines – users are directed to the latest stable release, Total Commander 7.56 instead. One of Total Commander’s biggest selling points is the fact it’s designed for expanded functionality via a raft of third-party plug-ins. The good news is that most should work fine with Total Commander 8 32-bit; the bad news is that all of them will require recoding to work with the 64-bit build. Both builds can be installed side-by-side with no ill-effects, allowing 64-bit users to continue using the 32-bit version when a specific plug-in is required. Among the various changes listed in the version 8 release notes are support for viewing JPEG, GIF and PNG files using Total Commander’s file-viewing application, Lister (accessible by pressing [F3]). Other tweaks have also been made to the program’s multi-rename tool, search function and user interface. Total Commander 8 still utilises the same, slightly dated interface that may put people off using it. There are of course alternatives, from the excellent – but pricey – Directory Opus to the freeware FreeCommander should you want to compare different file explorer replacements. Total Commander 8 Beta 32-bit and Total Commander 8 Beta 64-bit are available to download now as shareware 30-day trials for PCs running Windows 2000 or later. The full version costs $46.

Mozilla has released new final versions of Firefox 12 and Thunderbird 12, its open source browser and email messaging tools. Neither update – despite the new version number – contains much in the way of exciting new features, but developments on future builds suggest version 13 could be a landmark release for both. Firefox 12 introduces one notable change for Windows users – the advent of silent updates with no User Account Control dialog getting in the way, while Thunderbird 12’s headline new feature is the ability to view message extracts in global search results. Firefox 12 is a landmark release for Windows users in that it shifts to silent updates by eliminating the need for administrator-level access to the system. This in turn removes the UAC prompt and will provide a more seamless updating mechanism in the future. You can now view message extracts when performing global searches in Thunderbird 12. The only other notable change is a refresh to the HTML5 media controls that appear when the user browses video embedded in the page using HTML5 rather than a proprietary technology such as Adobe Flash. Although a disappointing update in itself, future builds of Firefox- which we’ll profile in more depth in a later post – promise some radical revamps, including major changes to the user interface. These will start to appear in Firefox 13, which is currently slated to move to the Beta channel tomorrow, on April 24. Like its cousin, Thunderbird 12 has little in the way of eye-catching new features. Those using its global search tools will, however, be pleased to see that message extracts are now displayed in the search results, while the new build also promises improvements to RSS feed subscription and general feed handling for those who use Thunderbird as a RSS reader. The final new feature in Thunderbird 12 is support for add-ons that provide different types of local mail storage to the default Mbox format currently utilised, such as MailDir or a sqlite database. This new feature is aimed primarily at developers, but may also interest more experienced users who are frustrated by the Mbox format. Thunderbird 13 also apes Firefox 13 in promising more radical changes, including support for sharing files via online storage rather than email attachments, and tools for leveraging IM clients including Twitter inside Thunderbird itself. To preview these new features now, check out Earlybird 13.0a2, the alpha version of Thunderbird, or wait 48 hours until Thunderbird 13 Beta is released. Both Firefox 12 FINAL and Thunderbird 12 FINAL are available as free, open-source downloads for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Virtualization specialist VMware has announced the release of VMware Workstation 8 for PC and VMware Fusion 4 for Mac. Both tools allow users to run different operating systems in virtual windows through one computer. Both releases include a number of new features, additional hardware support and are updated to take advantage of the latest operating systems (VMWare Fusion 4 has been optimised for Lion). VMware Workstation 8 also introduces a new system requirement: it will only run on PCs with 64-bit processors. VMware Workstation 8 One of the major new features in VMware Workstation 8 is its improved hardware support. Version 8 now supports USB 3.0, Bluetooth, HD audio with 7:1 surround sound and up to 64GB RAM, and includes improved 3D graphics performance. It includes new remote connection options for connecting to other hosts running Workstation, VMware vSphere and VMware Center. Version 8 also makes it possible to share VMs across the network, so colleagues can easily access them for testing purposes. The program also simplifies the creation of virtual machines for uploading to VMware vSphere – once created, the new VM can be simply dragged from the user’s desktop into vSphere. VMware Workstation 8 also features a revamped user interface, promising simplified menus, live thumbnails of running VMs, improved preferences screens and a new virtual machine library with enhanced search functionality that works across desktops, servers and other PCs running VMware Workstation. A full list of changes are detailed in the program’s release notes. VMWare Workstation 8 is available as a trial download for PCs with 64-bit CPUs running Windows or Linux. The full version costs $199, upgrades from version 6 or 7 cost $99. VMware Fusion 4 VMware claims more than 90 new features are present in VMware Fusion 4. It promises to provide the best Windows experience on OS X Lion, allowing users to add Windows applications to Launchpad, access them through Mission Control and view them at full screen while using Mac gestures to switch between them. It also promises better performance and faster graphics – up to two-and-a-half times faster 3D graphic performance than in previous versions due to being optimised for multi-core Macs and being a complete 64-bit Cocoa application. Interface changes echoing Workstation 8 include the redesigned virtual machine library and snapshot menu along with a brand new settings menu. VMware Fusion 4 also supports both OS X Lion and OS X Lion Server in virtual machines, in addition to support for OS X Leopard Server and OS X Snow Leopard Server. VMware has also announced a limited promotional price of just $49.99 for the software, a saving of $30 on its SRP. VMWare Fusion 4 is available as a trial download for Macs running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later. A detailed list of all changes and improvements are found in the program's release notes.

We’re only just through the second week of January, but the number of software releases is just as fast as ever. There have been so many applications hitting the servers over the last seven days, we wouldn’t be surprised if you had missed some here and there. This is why we have put together this handy roundup to get you back up to speed. If you want to keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues, look no further than Skype for Windows 5.7.0.137 Beta. The latest beta version of this chat client fixes a number of problems that have been found, but Mac users have more to look forward to in Skype for Mac Beta 5.5. The latest beta includes an improve call interface that makes it easier to mute calls, add new people to a conversation, and share files and video. Pale Moon 9 is an ultra-fast Firefox 9 powered web browser There are a number of web browsers to choose from these days, and one up and coming star is Pale Moon 9.0.1. The latest release is an impressively speed-optimized custom build of Firefox and there is also a 64-bit version available in the form of Pale Moon x64 9.0.1. Fans of portable apps should take a look at Pale Moon 9.0.1 Portable and Pale Moon x64 9.0.1 Portable which can be popped onto a USB drive. Another web browser update worth checking out is Google Chrome 17.0.963.33 Beta which enables you to check out just where Google’s alternative to the likes of Firefox is heading. Many people use their computers t manage a digital photo collection, and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Beta 32-bit and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Beta 64-bit can be used to make this easier. The latest beat version of this handy utility makes it possible to not only browse and manage photos as well as editing and enhancing them. Adobe may be well known for its photo editing software, but PhotoFiltre 7 is worth a look. This surprisingly powerful photo editor can also be found in a portable form - PhotoFiltre Portable 7. If you have spent any time creating a work of art or touching up your photo collection, you should definitely think about backing up your files. O&O AutoBackup 1.0.106 (32-bit) is a wonderful free backup tool which enables you to put your external hard drive to good use and if you are working with a 64-bit version of Windows, you should try O&O AutoBackup 1.0.106 (64-bit) instead. It is important to keep all of your files backed up but FavBackup 2.1.3 provides a quick and easy way to back up the settings and data for your web browser. Hardwipe 1.5.0 is a handy security tool that can be used to completely eliminate the files you want to delete. Play your tracks through your Android device using TuneSync and Notepod If you are used to working with an iOS or Android device, the idea of gestures will be familiar. StrokesPlus 1.2.3 enables you to create gestures that can be used in any Windows application to help automate common tasks. To make it easier to work with your applications and get to work faster, Windows 7 App Launcher v0.0.9.1 makes it easy to quickly launch multiple programs at the same time. If you want to customize the look of your computer, Rainmeter 2.2 makes it possible to completely alter the appearance of Windows with skins, gadgets, widgets and much more. On a more practical note, CDBurnerXP 4.4.0.2905 includes everything you need to create your own CDs and DVDs, including audio discs. Also in the musical category is TuneSync Server 2.0 which can be used by Android users in conjunction with Notpod 1.4.1 to wirelessly transfer your iTunes music collection to your Android device. That’s it for this week – there’ll be a plethora of downloads to look forward to in the week ahead and another roundup in seven days.

Transforming a standard portrait photo into something which stands out from the crowd, a shot you'd genuinely like to share with others, usually takes a great deal of time and expertise. But if you don't have much of either, you might want to consider Funny Photo Maker, an excellent tool which produces great results with the absolute minimum of hassle. As you might guess from the program name, this isn't a regular photo editor and won't be for everyone. But if you'd like to take a friend's face and place it on an ape, a magazine cover, movie poster or something similar, then you really need to take a closer look. Getting started is extremely easy. Just open a portrait shot, optionally choose the Edit option and position a selection rectangle (or other shape) around the face you'd like to use. And then start browsing the program's templates to see what's on offer. The Magazine section has covers for Allure, Cosmopolitan, GQ, Vogue and more, for instance - and just clicking any of these will display that issue with a picture of your friend on the cover. In just a click you can add your face to the Avatar poster, Twilight, Iron Man and more If they're more interested in Hollywood then you or your friends could appear on posters like Avatar, Iron Man, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, X-Men and more. And you also get lots of clever and inventive frames. So again, in just a click or two you could have an image which displays your photo in an art gallery, on the side of a truck, as the face on a dollar bill, and on the big screen in Time Square, amongst many others. If this is a little too off the wall for your needs, there are more standard effects available under the "Artistic" tab. You can add snow or rain to an image, say; turn it into an oil or water painting; apply some excellent lighting effects, turn the image into a collage, and more. Funny Photo Maker also includes a very basic editor of its own where you can do simple work: sharpen an image, tweak brightness and contrast, add a text caption, clipart and more. And when you're done, the program provides options to save your image as a file, or upload it directly to Facebook or Twitter. You do have to keep your editing expectations fairly low here, as the program is more about ease of use than trying to rival Photoshop. So you don't get advanced selection tools to try and precisely separate a face from the image background, for instance, and there aren't 100 hi-tech ways to adjust your image colours (or really any at all). That doesn't matter, though. Funny Photo Maker works because you can have the basic setup complete within seconds, then there are a huge range of quality effects to explore, and applying them mostly only takes a click. If you want a fast and fun way to get more creative with your images then this tool is an absolute must.

Accidentally deleting a partition seems like a major disaster when it first happens. Not only have all of its files disappeared, but you can't even see that drive any more. The situation may not be as bad as it seems, though. Your data is unlikely to be erased, just yet (other programs will generally write only to their own partition). And missing partitions are relatively easy to recover, as long as you have access to something like the free (for personal use) MiniTool Partition Recovery. The program works with regular hard drives, USB and other removable storage devices. And it covers most of the file systems you're likely to encounter on a PC, including FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5 (although not exFAT, unfortunately). Follow the simple wizard and any missing partitions should soon be restored A wizard-based interface means MiniTool Partition Recovery is generally very easy to use, too. There are only a few steps: select the drive you'd like to browse; choose the area to check (the entire disk, its unallocated space, or whatever range of sectors you need); accept the default Scan mode, and you're done. The program scans your drive, hopefully finds any missing partitions, and you can restore them in a couple of clicks. Of course life isn't always so straightforward, but if you do encounter any problems then MiniTool Partition Recovery has a few extra options which just might help. If it can't find your partition with the default settings, for instance, choosing the Full Scan Mode rather than the default Quick Scan will run a more thorough check. It's also considerably slower, but there's a better chance of finding your files. Or, if the program thinks it's found more partitions than you've actually lost, just double-click each one to explore its contents and you'll quickly find your data. There is a significant limitation here, in that you don't get a bootable version on a disaster recovery disc. Which means that if your PC won't boot because the system partition is damaged then you'll have no way to restore it. MiniTool Partition Recovery does deliver plenty of functionality for a free tool, though, and if you don't have something similar to hand already then it might be worth installing a copy - just in case.

Internet Explorer has never been renowned for its standards support, and with good reason - the browser has always trailed far behind the competition. Today's release of IE10 Platform Preview 2, though, showed that maybe - just maybe - things are beginning to change. Major additions include support for Web workers, an interesting technology which allows web applications to run complex JavaScripts in the background. And so lengthy tasks won't have to leave you hanging any more: the application's interface should still be able to respond to your clicks. New support for iframe isolation and the HTML5 sandbox will help to harden the security of web applications, closing many security loopholes. The support for CSS3 Positioned Floats allows developers to easily create print-like layouts, where text can flow smoothly around images or other objects. And elsewhere you'll find support for the HTML5 Parser, HTML5 Forms, channel messaging, Media Query Listeners and more. Of course if you're not a web developer then this may not mean a great deal, but fortunately Microsoft has provided a host of useful demos, explaining clearly what each new feature does and why it matters. (Just open Platform Preview 2 and you'll be taken to the Test Drive site where you can try these out.) Or alternatively, you might submit the new browser to your favourite HTML5 test site. Visit html5test.com in IE9, for example, and it scores 141 and 5 bonus points. Try the same page in IE10 Platform Preview 2 and it rates a far more impressive 231 and 6 bonus points. (Okay, it's true, Firefox 5 scores 286 and 9 bonus points, but at least IE is now beginning to compete.) You probably won't want to do much else with Platform Preview 2, as it's still very basic: no toolbar, no address bar, none of the regular menus, not even Back or Forward buttons. And while you can install the program alongside a regular edition of Internet Explorer, it may conflict with IE8, perhaps even causing it to crash (just close Platform Preview 2 to solve the problem). We had no problems running it with IE9, though, and if you're at all interested in Microsoft's expanding web standards support then Internet Explorer Platform Preview 2 is definitely worth a few minutes of your time. Keep in mind, though, that as with the first preview, it's Windows 7-only (x86 or x64.)

Oracle has announced the release of VirtualBox 4.2.6, the latest edition of its powerful cross-platform virtualization tool. This is a maintenance release, and so looks more or less unchanged. But the build does include plenty of welcome bug fixes and other small improvements. VBoxManage now properly converts disks from raw images, for instance. It improves media handling, supports new metrics for "network rate" and "disk usage", and includes fixes to ensure other metrics are now properly handled. It looks much the same, but VirtualBox 4.2.6 includes many fixes and small improvements An El Torito BIOS fix should help when you need to boot VMs from a CD. Windows Additions has been tweaked to work better with Windows 8 and Windows 2000. And there are multiple fixes to improve reliability and ensure the program works as you expect. So you can now terminate a VM even if VBoxSvc has crashed, for instance. And Windows Additions won't fail just because the shared folders host service isn't available. If you need to know more, then the full list of fixes and improvements is available in the official Changelog entry. Otherwise, Windows, Mac and Linux builds of VirtualBox 4.2.6 are available now.

Already well known for its easy-to-use iOS and Android photo editing apps, Fotor has just entered the desktop market with the release of the free Fotor 1.0.0 for Desktop and Mac. And while the program is relatively simple, oriented more to quick optimisations rather than complex edits, it's also very easy to use, and has more than enough functionality to justify a download. If a picture has lighting issues, for instance, you don't have to start playing around with brightness, contrast, colours or anything else. Just choose the conditions which applied when the photo was taken - "Backlit", "Cloudy", "Sunset" and so on - and the program will automatically optimise the image for you. If the lighting is fine, but you'd just like it to look a little more interesting, then Fotor has 60+ colour and lighting effects which could help. Again, it's all very easy. Choose a category from the list ("Classic", "Lomo", B&W", "Vignette", "Art"), and thumbnails will show you how the current picture will look for every available effect. And if you see something you like, simply click it for a closer look. Just click a thumbnail to apply that effect right away It's just as easy to add a border to your image (and there are 30 available). A very configurable Tilt-Shift effect allows you to fully customise the strength and position of the blur. If you prefer more practical options, then there are also tools to rotate or straighten your image; sharpen or blur it; tweak exposure, brightness, contrast, saturation, temperature and tint; crop your photo, and view its EXIF data. And when you're ready, there are tools to quickly share your images on Flickr, Facebook and Twitter. If there's a small problem here, it's that the Fotor interface still feels more like an app than a Windows application. You can't open multiple images at once, for instance. There's no edit menu here, no right-click options. There are no single letter shortcuts for menu items (you can't press Alt+F, O to open a file, say), and other standard hotkeys - like F1, for instance - aren't supported at all. Still, once you've got used to this, Fotor does prove to be very quick and easy to use. Some of its tools are very capable (there's an excellent Crop function, for instance), and on balance it's a simple but effective way to optimise and share your latest photos.

Just how are your files encrypted when you back them up online? If you’re lucky, your backup provider will perform the encryption and decryption of your files on your computer, so they’re already encrypted prior to being uploaded. That means the backup company can’t access those files, whatever happens. But what if your backup company – like Dropbox – performs the encryption at the server end, and then suddenly changes its terms and conditions to allow it to hand over your data to the authorities if they demand it? You could change backup provider, but that might not be practical. Instead, you need a solution that encrypts the data for you, allowing you to upload a secure, encrypted version that only you can access. One such solution is Boxcrypt. Boxcrypt is currently in beta, and will ship in two versions: free, which limits your encrypted data to 2GB, and unlimited, which will be available for a one-off cost (€9.99 for personal users, or or €29.99 for businesses). The beta version currently only supports the free 2GB account. Installation is simple, as is setup: just choose a folder, assign it a drive letter and add your password, which will be used to encrypt it. Then just copy all your sensitive data into this folder, which can then be added to your online backup. The folder will be uploaded fully encrypted, ensuring your data stays private, whatever happens. If the price is too steep, we recently revealed that you can use the open-source tool Truecrypt instead. Truecrypt, which also works with Mac and Linux, is more complicated to set up, but you’re able to create encrypted folders much larger than 2GB. For simplicity though, many people will still be tempted by Boxcrypt, which is available now as a free download for Windows XP (.NET Framework 2.0 or later required), Vista or 7. If you're looking for an online backup provider that encrypts your data on your computer prior to uploading it, take a look at Wuala, AVG LiveKive, or SpiderOak.

Foxit are perhaps best known for their compact PDF viewer, a speedy and lightweight alternative to Adobe Reader, but the company has plenty more to offer. Late last year they released Foxit Phantom PDF Suite, a versatile tool for creating, editing, comparing and organising PDF files. Powerful though it was, Foxit have continued working on the product, and the newly released Foxit Phantom 2.0 contains some welcome new additions. As with the previous version, you're able to create a PDF file from any application by using Foxit's virtual printer driver (open the relevant document, print to the Foxit Printer and it'll generate a PDF file for you). The program can also scan a document directly to PDF. And a Microsoft Word add-in lets you convert your current Word document to PDF in a couple of clicks. New this time, though, is the option to batch convert multiple files to PDF. Drag in the files you need (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, plain text and many image formats are supported). Choose whether you'd like to convert each document into a separate PDF file, or merge them into one. Then click Convert and Phantom will generate the PDF files for you. And quickly, too - Foxit say Phantom is up to 3 times faster than the competition. Page manipulations If a document isn't quite as you'd like then there are many ways to reorganise it at the page level. The easiest way to do this is at Phantom's thumbnail view, which shows your current page with thumbnails of other pages on the left-hand side. This makes it easy to jump straight to the page you need, but right-click one of the thumbnails and you'll find many page manipulation options: you're able to extract, replace, delete, swap, duplicate and move pages, usually in a couple of clicks. If you just want to rearrange page order, though, you can now do it by simply dragging and dropping the page thumbnails around. This works well and gives you immediate visual feedback of the new file, although of course the usefulness of this depends on your document. (If it's mostly just plain text and every page looks the same, then the thumbnails will, too.) Another new feature sees you able to insert a blank page directly into a document, which can then be edited as you like. If you just need a title page, say, you can now create one directly without going back to the source document. Or if you have the page already, but in a printed form, then you can just insert it from your scanner. And there are plenty of smaller additions that will help you work a little more quickly. Want to print a particular set of pages, for instance? No need to try and remember page numbers, just select the thumbnails you need, right-click one and select Print Pages: very convenient. Editing options As you'd expect, Phantom 2.0 includes plenty of tools to edit and correct objects within your document. There's an array of text options (highlight, underline, strikeout, replace, insert and more) to help you mark up and correct existing content, for instance. And a selection of typewriter tools lets you add more. If you're looking to comment on a document then the Note tool will come in useful. Enter a comment, and a yellow "note" icon will be left on the page. Drag and drop this to a particular point on the page, and it'll be saved there. When others click the icon they'll see your note. You get a capable set of vector drawing tools: arrow, line, rectangle, oval, polygon, polyline, pencil and more. You're able to customise details like line thickness, border style, colour, fill colour and even opacity. There's a comprehensive collection of stamps - "Approved", "Completed", "Confidential", "Draft", and so on - along with tools to create any others you might need. And if you're interested in creating documents that are more than just colourful text, then Phantom 2.0 has some advanced editing options that may appeal. You're able to embed just about any movie or audio file into your PDF document, for instance. Adding images only takes a moment (this version adds support for PNG and TIFF to the more common file types), and you also get the option to insert file attachments. Most powerful of all is the Create Link option, though. This lets you add an object to the page, and define exactly what happens when it's clicked: you can jump to a page or position in the document, open or execute a file, open a web page, import form data, submit a form, execute a JavaScript and more. It's a versatile option that can help add a great deal of interactivity to your PDF files. Welcome improvements Phantom 2.0 is particularly good with interactive PDF forms. You're able to design complex forms of your own, and create customised logic that defines exactly what people can enter. Information can then be saved in the file for collection and analysis later. Security is strong, too. In a few clicks you're able to password-protect a document, encrypt it, or add restrictions like preventing users from printing your work. But there's also the option to secure a document using digital certificates, which adds more granularity as each certificate can have its own permissions. So, for instance, you could allow some users to simply view your document, while a super-user also gets permission to edit text and delete pages. If there was a problem with Phantom 1.0, it's that it delivered high-end features while ignoring a few of the basics, but it's good to see Foxit rectifying that in this version with some welcome improvements. Opening the Document Properties dialog now provides easy access to metadata like its title, subject, author, keywords and more. The Properties "Initial View" tab configures exactly how your document will be displayed when it first loads: the navigation method, the opening page, default zoom and more. And if you make a mistake while editing then you'll now find the Undo option where you'd expect it, on the Edit menu, where you can now undo and redo up to 10,000 actions.

AVG Technologies has today announced the release of its AVG 2013 product range, including new versions of AVG AntiVirus Free, AVG AntiVirus ($39.99) and AVG Internet Security ($54.99). And the most obvious change to the lineup is the very Windows 8-like interface, where plain green tiles provide easy access to each program's features and functionality. If you're not a Metro/ Modern UI fan, though, don't worry too much. The interface is Windows 8 compatible, and supports touch screens, but it also works just fine with a mouse and keyboard, and we found it generally clean and simple to use. AVG's new range includes a brand new and very Windows 8-like interface The core practical benefit of the new release is significantly improved scanning time. AVG claim the 2013 engine is 36% faster than before, and our initial tests confirmed that it's now impressively speedy, with the program typically taking only around 1:20 to run a Whole computer scan on our test PC (that's around 680,000 objects checked, after it's completed a first optimisation scan). The latest edition also loads more quickly, while Internet Security 2013 now features a simplified, smarter firewall and more accurate spam filter. And a "More from AVG" button provides easier access to assorted other offerings, including the free Android AVG AntiVirus app. On balance the 2013 range seems to be a solid step forward, improving AVG's performance in a number of key areas. If you'd like to know more then check out our AVG Internet Security 2013 review. But if you prefer the hands-on approach, then you could always take a closer look for yourself. AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 and trial versions of AVG AntiVirus 2013 and AVG Internet Security 2013 are available now.

Bitdefender has released 60-Second Virus Scanner, a cloud-based malware hunter which aims to provide an extra layer of security protection for your PC. And at first glance this seems to work well. Installation is speedy; there were no conflicts with existing security software in our first tests; and the program really did complete its scan in only 60 seconds. Unfortunately, as the program must send off its data to the cloud for analysis, the end of the scan doesn't mean the end of your waiting. We sat looking at a "waiting for server" message for a very long time, and it actually took 281 seconds before a "no viruses found" message was displayed. It's compact. It's easy to use. But it could keep you waiting rather more than 60 seconds. The program has only just been released, of course, so you could argue that maybe the servers are just getting more of a hammering than Bitdefender were expecting. But that doesn't seem to be the whole story, either. Our report revealed that, for all its work, 60-Second Virus Scanner had only scanned 32 processes and 1,415 files: that's basic, even for a quick scan (especially as this was a fast PC with an SSD). Could the program play a part on your PC? There's no doubt it's easy to use, with a clean and simple interface. Resource use isn't too bad - the interface requires around 30MB RAM, but scans don't noticeably affect the rest of your system - and, once installed, you could probably forget about it and just leave the program to do its job. And the limitations of the 60-second scans aren't necessarily a fatal problem, either, because by default the program is also set up to scan critical areas in real time. If that means 60-Second Virus Scanner will check new files as they appear then it could still offer a useful extra layer of malware protection.

Bitdefender has released its 2013 range: Antivirus Plus 2013 ($49.95), Internet Security 2013 ($69.95), and the high-end Total Security 2013 ($79.95). And the headline addition this time is Safepay, a secure virtual browser which aims to protect your online banking and shopping details (although the technology will help to shield any confidential online activity). It's a useful feature and is available on all three products. The 2013 products also now include a "USB Immunizer". Right-click a flash drive in Explorer, select "Immunize this drive" and it'll be protected against future infection by autorun-based malware. Bitdefender's clean and straightforward interface remains largely unchanged The other major new feature is Anti-Theft, a computer location service which is available in Total Security 2013 only. If your system is lost or stolen then just log in to your Bitdefender account, and you may be able to display its whereabouts on a map, as well as locking the computer remotely or - as a last resort - wiping it clean. And just as you'd expect, several of the existing features have also seen worthwhile enhancements. The parental controls are more capable, Safebox now allows secure file sharing, and the MyBitdefender dashboard now makes your program status accessible to any internet-connected device, for instance. Put it all together and this looks like a solid move forward for Bitdefender. Safepay in particular seems a very effective way to avoid malware, and it's good to see the tool available in every program across the range. If you're looking for a new security suite then Antivirus Plus 2013, Internet Security 2013, and Total Security 2013 deserve careful consideration, and 30-day trial builds of each are available now.

Feature-packed and easy to use, CyberLink PowerDirector has always been one of the better consumer video editors. Of course there's always room for improvement, though, and the latest version, PowerDirector 10 Ultra, has some very interesting additions. Full 3D editing support allows you to import 3D videos and photos, or convert 2D media to 3D, then enhance these with 3D effects, titles, transitions and more. New 2D effects include a time-lapse tool, or support for recording hand-drawn animations (signing your name, say), and playing them back within a video. Plug-in support delivers 10 new "art effects" ("hand drawn", "pastel" and so on). And there are smarter audio tools, more video sharing options, and ease of use improvements, as well as speed boosts which could see movie rendering time cut in half. Sounds good. But how does the program behave in real life? We took a closer look. Interface Launch PowerDirector 10 Ultra and you're presented with a familiar three-pane editing interface: media files, effects, transitions and more are displayed top-left; an excellent preview window (including the option to preview in a secondary 2D or 3D display) is top-right; and there's a 100-track timeline across the bottom of the screen, where you may drag and drop clips and effects to build up your movie. Four buttons at the top of the screen offer further guidance. By default the Edit option is selected, but you may also click Capture, to import media directly from DV or HDV camcorders, webcams, microphones and more; clicking Produce allows you to turn your movie into a video, or upload it online; and Create Disc presents a host of disc and menu authoring options. This isn't an entirely perfect arrangement. You can't simply use the Media Room to browse to a folder and examine its contents, for instance: you have to import particular files or folders, and then view them. We'd appreciate more thumbnail size options (right now you get 80 pixel, 100 pixel, and that's it), and initially at least the sheer number of buttons and right-click options can be intimidating. In general the interface is well designed and easy-to-use, though, with tooltips and quality documentation to walk you through any initial problems. And some useful new additions will further simplify your life. Video clips on the timeline may now be displayed as continuous thumbnails, for instance, helping you see where scenes start and end. Right-clicking the timeline ruler at a particular point allows you to add a custom-named timeline marker ("At the beach"). Other media files snap to these, making it easier to precisely position your content. And similarly, the new Automatic Beat Detection tool can analyse a soundtrack and add its own timeline markers to highlight major changes, helping you synchronise effects and transitions with your music. This isn't a magic solution - if the track varies only subtly then you may get no markers or way too many - but with the right source material it could save you a lot of time (and it only takes a few seconds to try). 3D editing The biggest headline addition to PowerDirector 10 Ultra is probably 3D editing; the program has fallen behind here, but this release sees CyberLink do a good job of catching up with the competition. There's reasonable support for importing 3D video and image formats, for instance (MVC .MTS, dual stream AVI, side-by-side, over-under, MPO and JPS are all covered). Sometimes the program doesn't realise you've opened a 3D file, though, so you have to inform it of this fact manually (these can be hard to recognise but it's still annoying). You've no 3D source material? Not a problem: CyberLink's TrueTheater 3D technology (imported from PowerDVD) automatically converts 2D movies to 3D. In our tests the quality of the end result varies greatly depending on your source material, but you can at least tweak it by dragging a "scene depth" slider, and if nothing else it's a fun way to enhance old home movies. And once you've got your 3D clips then they can be enhanced in various ways. Click the Effects tab, say, and you'll find 19 attractive, if slightly gimmicky 3D-specific effects (snow, fireworks, bubbles and so on); there are also 10 3D transitions, 10 particle effects and more to keep the theme going. The existing title, particle and PiP effects can also be given a 3D touch, though this isn't exactly obvious (with titles, say, you must open the Title Designer, click the Animation Properties tab and check "Enable 3D depth"). And when it's finished you may export your masterpiece as 3D video (MVC, half or full-size side-by-side or anaglyph formats); upload it directly to YouTube as a 3D movie; or author a 3D DVD, BD or AVCHD disc. (PowerDirector only provides 2 3D menu templates but it's easy to create more, and doubtless you'll soon be able to download plenty for free from CyberLink's DirectorZone.) This is genuine end-to-end 3D editing, then. Most of the 3D effects are nothing special, though; and some of the 3D options are a little hidden, so it can take a while to figure out what you need to do. Still, the new 3D abilities are a worthwhile addition, and we'll be interested to see how they develop in future. Effects If you're more interested in what you can do with 2D movies, then one notable addition this time around is the new support for plugin-based effects. The only currently visible sign of this is the inclusion of an Art Effects category ("Air Brush", "Pastel", "Metallic" and so on). While not the kind of effects you'll use every day, they can deliver spectacular results, and most are very configurable. (The "Metallic" option allows you to set the base metal colour, and provides 5 other attributes you can tweak via sliders.) Of course the whole point of supporting plugins is that an application becomes more extensible, and disappointingly, PowerDirector isn't there yet: CyberLink says the ability to add other NewBlue plugins won't arrive until a "future version". A pity, but the 10 new Art Effects are welcome anyway, and this does at least hold some promise for future developments. Elsewhere, the Slideshow Creator wizard has a new time-lapse style.  Import your sequence of photos, choose the duration of each image and (optionally) the number images to skip between each displayed photo, and that's it: your finished video will be ready within moments. And in a useful creative touch, the Picture-in-Picture Objects room has been extended with new Paint Animations, allowing you to record hand-drawn animations and include them in the video. So it's easy to, say, draw an arrow to highlight something of interest in a shot. Or you could capture a dynamic clip of your signature gradually appearing, save this as a PiP object, then just drag and drop it onto the end of everything you create: very convenient. Performance PowerDirector has always been one of the fastest consumer video editors, but of course rendering is still a lengthy business - so it's good to see CyberLink has continued to focus on performance. Startup time proved excellent on our Intel Core i7 test PC (running 32-bit Windows 7), for instance, at 5.6 seconds. (For comparison, the new MAGIX Movie Edit Pro MX Plus averaged 12.75 seconds.) New OpenCL support means that effects preview and rendering now benefits from GPU-based hardware acceleration, and this can have impressive results. We used 9 1080p clips to create a 3x3 video wall, and incorporated a couple of effects; without OpenCL the project took 45 minutes and 15 seconds to render as an H.264 clip, with OpenCL this dropped to 20:34 - a 220% speed boost. You won't necessarily see this improvement every time, of course: if you're using less clips, or don't employ effects which support OpenCL (possible, although 48 do), then the benefits over previous versions won't be as apparent. Although you shouldn't feel short-changed. Simply joining 4 full HD MP4 clips took 13:04 in MAGIX Movie Edit Pro MX Plus; PowerDirector 10 did the same job in 4:12, more than three times as fast. And if all the video output options confuse you, then the new Intelligent SVRT (Smart Video Rendering Technology) dialog should help: in a click it shows you the most appropriate and efficient video profiles for encoding your project. This isn't always useful information - you may already know exactly what sort of video you need, and it doesn't always tell you which profile will be faster anyway - but it only takes a couple of seconds to display, and is still a feature worth having. Other features There are plenty of other new features in PowerDirector 10, too. Launch the program, for instance, and you have the option to choose one of three editing modes: full-featured, Easy (the old Magic Style Movie Wizard) or Slideshow Maker. In theory this will help beginners create clips more quickly by jumping straight to one of the automated wizards, but for most people it'll just get in the way, and they'll probably check the box to avoid ever displaying it again. Much more usefully, heading into the Audio Mixing Room now reveals a button which can normalize the volume of multiple audio files in a click: very handy, and not before time. There's more content available: more video tutorials, and more slideshow templates. CyberLink's DirectorZone site (integrated with PowerDirector) now includes more than 200,000 templates, effects and menus; tracking down the best of these can take a while, but it's still an extremely valuable resource. And once you've finished, PowerDirector 10 can now output 3D discs (DVD, AVCHD, BD) and upload to more websites (YouTube 3D, Vimeo, DailyMotion), as well as supporting the regular disc, YouTube and Facebook options. The performance improvements alone are enough to justify moving to PowerDirector 10, then. And the new 3D support will be a welcome bonus to many. But even if we ignore those, there are plenty of other smaller tweaks which provide new creative possibilities and will help to make you just a little more productive.  It's an impressive package which reaffirms PowerDirector's position as the leading consumer video editor: if you're unhappy with your current editor, particularly for performance reasons, then you really should give PowerDirector 10 Ultra a try.

Symantec Software has released version 6.0 of its all-in-one security, backup and system maintenance tool. Norton 360 offers the same security engine as Norton Internet Security 2012, but also includes backup and system tuneup tools as well. Version 6.0 add support for Windows 8, a number of features added in Norton 2012 – including Identity Safe and Norton Management – plus improved navigation for backups and automatic error recovery. Norton 360 6.0 uses the Norton Internet Security 2012 engine for its security, which explains why many of its new features debuted in NIS 2012 when it released last year. These include the new Identity Safe tool for managing personal data securely, the Norton Management interface, allowing users to remotely manage their protected PCs via the cloud and improved Download Insight, which rates programs for reliability and stability as well as security. Aside from updating its security engine to Norton 2012, Norton 360 6.0 also includes minor improvements to its other components, including simpler navigation for backups. It will also automatically update to support Windows 8, including the beta version that will follow the current alpha build as its testing is ramped up to a wider audience. Norton 360 6.0 is to be joined by a brand new product: Norton 360 Everywhere. This basically covers Windows, Mac and Android users by providing multi-user license for using three key Norton products across a variety of devices. The suite will comprise Norton 360 Premier for Windows, Norton Internet Security for Mac, and Norton Mobile Security for Android (but not iOS). Symantec has also announced plans to launch an invite-only pilot of its Norton One product to select users in the US, Canada, UK, Republic of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand . Norton One aims to provide comprehensive security and other protection across multiple users and even households through a cloud-based management console.  These five devices are interchangeable, allowing licenses to be transferred from one device to another as required – the trial begins on March 22. Norton 360 v6.0 is available now as a free trial download for Windows PCs. The full suite costs $89.99 for a three-user solution offering 2GB free online storage, or $99.99 for the Premier version, which offers 25GB free online storage as well as the three-user license. No pricing has yet been made available for Norton 360 Everywhere, which will be launched later this Spring.

Windows 7 hits the streets on Thursday, and the Microsoft publicity machine will soon be trying to persuade you that upgrading is a very good thing. We would generally agree - it's a real improvement on Vista - but don't part with any cash until you've confirmed your system's Windows 7-readiness with this helpful new tool. The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor scans your PC hardware, peripherals, drivers and installed applications, checking to see that you'll be able to install Windows 7 and not break anything. The scanning process seems to be extremely thorough, or maybe just slow as the program's still a beta, we're not sure which. Either way, it can take a very long time (15 to 20 minutes on our test systems) so there's little pointing waiting around for something to happen. Go do something else for a while and leave the Upgrade Advisor to do its work. When the scan is finally complete you'll see a report that offers a verdict on whether you'll be able to upgrade to Windows 7, highlights any conflicts that might arise if you do, and offers useful links with, for instance, detailed instructions on the upgrade process. It's all useful information, and seems reliable despite the program's beta status, so if you're planning on moving to Windows 7 any time soon then we'd recommend you give the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor a try first.

One year after it was first announced, Microsoft has finally revealed the first full version of its Age of Empires Online game. And if you're a fan of empire-building Civilization-type games, or real-time strategy in general, then there's good news: Age of Empires Online will be free to play indefinitely, with no subscription fees to worry about. The core plot is a familiar one. The game launches with your small village (Greek or Egyptian, your choice) all alone in a huge online world. But by collecting resources, managing buildings and units, and improving your technology you'll soon be able to expand, and so begin the process of transforming your civilisation into a powerful empire. There will be plenty of other players trying to do the same thing, of course, and the program integrates with Games for Windows Live to help manage the social side of this. You'll be able to chat with other players, trade with their cities, or perhaps send your armies to trample them into the dust: it's really your call. Initially, though, there's nothing too exciting to do, probably wise as it helps new players learn how everything works. For the most part you'll be engaged in simple "quests", mini-missions where you need to perform some basic task: go here, collect that, kill the invaders, destroy their settlement and so on. As you construct new buildings, build new units and begin to move along the technology tree, though, so Age of Empires Online becomes more interesting. And if you want more, then purchasing optional add-ons will deliver everything from decorations for your capital city, to new units and greater production capabilities, and more complex missions like the Defence of Crete (assist King Minos by fighting back hordes of invaders). But while these add-ons are fun - and some may be essential if you want your empire to thrive - they'll cost from around $5 to $20, which soon adds up. And while purchasing a Season Pass will get you all online content for 30% off the regular price, that's still around $100 for just the first six months (and that's a "special deal": expect the price to climb even higher in future). Of course you don't have to pay out for the premium content. And while that may leave you at a disadvantage in the long term, there's still plenty of fun to be had here. Just be sure you install Age of Empires Online somewhere with a fast broadband connection, though - installation involves downloading more than 2GB of data, so if your connection is normally on the sluggish side then you could be waiting quite some time.

If there's an aspect of your PC which you don't like then it can normally be changed very quickly: a right-click option here, maybe launch a Control Panel applet there, install a new program perhaps, and the system should soon be more suited to your needs. But while this configurability is great on your own computer, it's a real problem when you want a PC to be much more restrictive: a system which you'll install in a school, say, or a business. What you'll probably want to do then is set up some basic configuration, and make sure your users can't do anything to change it - and that's where Deskman comes in. The compact commercial tool (priced from $60) appears deceptively simple at first, with the bulk of its functionality available in just a single dialog box. Is that it, you might wonder? Browse through the tabs, though, and you'll be surprised at just how much the program can do. You might start by building a Safe Start Menu, for instance, with only the applications you'd like your users to access. The regular Start Menu can then be hidden (although it still exists, if you need to use it yourself later). Deskman has a great deal of features and options, but most are available from one straightforward dialog box And because of course users might try to launch programs in other ways, Deskman also provides a Freeze option which allows you to define exactly which programs can be run. If browsing is an issue, then you can turn it off entirely, or restrict users to visiting just specific sites which you define. And you can set up your preferred desktop with your own choice of application icons, shortcuts and more, and the program will maintain and restore this for you, no matter what your users might try to do. More experienced users will of course try various tricks to get around this, but Deskman has options to block them all. So you can disable or limit Task Manager, for instance; disable the Windows keys, Alt+Tab and all the other system keypresses; hide the system tray, application buttons or the entire taskbar; restrict access to Control Panel, Explorer and a whole lot more. And while the sheer volume of options means it'll take a while to set up Deskman properly, the mechanics of the process isn't difficult. For the most part you're just working your way through a tabbed dialog, checking boxes next to a restriction you need, and the program will then apply these with a click. Deskman may initially feel a little expensive, then, but if you really need to protect a computer then it's well worth the investment: the ability to preserve your system setup without you regularly having to manually restore it will save you a great deal of time and hassle. It's a very powerful tool with a lot of options, and there's a 30-day trial available so you can sample them for yourself.

German developer O&O Software has announced the immediate release of O&O DiskImage 6, its drive backup tool. DiskImage 6, which is also available as a separate 64-bit build, allows users to take exact byte-for-byte images of their hard drives, adds a plethora of new features, including the ability to back up individual files and folders. Other new features include the ability to mount standard ISO image files as virtual drives as well as DiskImage backup images, plus a revamped user interface designed to make the backup process simpler and clearer for less experienced users, which includes a one-click backup option. DiskImage 6, which costs $29 for the Professional Edition or $49 for a three-computer Family Edition license, also claims to provide significantly faster performance when backing up or recovering a drive image, and also revises the program’s machine independent restoration (MIR) feature, which allows the drive image of one computer to be copied to another. The major new feature – file-based backups – produces image files in the proprietary obk format. These are basically compressed archives based on the open-source BZIP2 format, and can be accessed either from within DiskImage itself, or using compatible third-party utilities, such as WinZip and IZArc, to restore entire folders or selected files. Individual files can also be recovered from images – DiskImage allows you to mount your image as a virtual drive, letting you access it via Windows Explorer. Version 6 also adds the ability to mount standard ISO images – typically images of CDs and DVDs – in the same way. DiskImage v6 ships with a brand new much-improved user interface Other notable new and revised features include a choice of imaging methods, including a forensic imaging option that allows the user to attempt data recovery from the drive image. DiskImage 6 also now supports the conversion of Microsoft Virtual PC (VHD) hard disks to DiskImage images and vice versa. The user interface has also been tweaked to make the program more accessible to novices. There’s an Information Bar that displays all the key options – clicking one then reveals the next steps to follow. All selected options are displayed before starting a backup, with others – such as shutting down the computer after the backup completes – accessible during the actual process. O&O DiskImage 6 Professional 32-bit and O&O DiskImage 6 Professional 64-bit are both available to download as free trial versions for PCs running Windows XP or later. Look out for our in-depth review later on in the week. Single-computer Professional licenses cost $29 each; a three-computer Family license costs $49.

When it comes to to-do apps and reminder tools, Android is the perfect platform thanks to its mobile nature and the various synchronization options that are available to ensure that the same data is available on your PC or Mac. So ideal is the platform for this type of app, there is no shortage of titles that have been designed to help you to keep your life in order, avoid missing deadlines and appointments, and keep track of things you need to do and buy. Even before days of iOS and Android, Remember The Milk was available as an online app and the level of control the service provides over your to do list is unparalleled. The iOS app has been available for the iPhone and iPod for a little while now, but the update to version 2 for Android has seen the software evolve into a free app for Android users that bring the same powerful options that have been available to iOS devotees for so long. The interface has been given a major overhaul, but it is the fact that anyone with a Remember The Milk account - both free and paid-for - can now make use of the app free of charge that is the real headlines news. When creating tasks and reminders, they can be easily organised into categories to allow for easier sorting in future by assigning them to lists. To make it even easier to manage very extensive lists of things you need to remember, additional fields can be added to individual entries including tags, location information, web links and more. As you would rightly expect from any to-do app worthy of note, Remember The Milk allows for different priority levels to be assigned to tasks so that you can see at a glance what you need to be focusing on next. Despite the huge range of options available in the app, the interface remains remarkably uncluttered and allows for easy navigation. By default you are greeted by the list of tasks you have to complete today, but links are available so you can see what needs to be done tomorrow and in the week ahead. You can also view all of the lists you have created and this makes it easy to separate the tasks that you have created that are related to work, and those that are more personal in nature, but it can also be used to manage large project by breaking them down into a series of smaller sub-tasks. Other options come into play when you have assigned a task to a particular location. This can then be used as another method of sorting all of your incomplete tasks, but you also have the option of using location services to determine if you have anything on your to-do list that could be done in the surrounding area – for shopping this can be a real time-saver as it is all too easy to drive home only to realise that there was one more shop you needed to visit. Depending on how you work and what you are using the app for, you may want to adjust the search radius for what qualifies as ‘nearby’. By default this is set to 1 kilometre, but can be reduced to as little as 250m or increased to up to 50km. Keeping in sync It is hard to find any complaints with the app as it has all been thought out so well. If there is one minor niggle it would have to be the fact that when using Remember The Milk with a standard, free account, you are limited to synchronizing once every 24 hours. Upgrading to a Pro account also adds support for push notifications and badges, and this can make it easier to monitor how many tasks you have left to complete. For everyday use such as shopping lists and reminders for doctors’ appointments and the like, this should not be an issue, although it does mean that you have to plan ahead with your syncs. Of course, a premium subscription is available which allows for unlimited synchronization, but this does come at a cost – albeit a fairly low one. When used for working on group projects. The homescreen widgets that are also available with a Pro account are available mean that you can monitor your to-do list at a glance, while the app in never far away for when you need more detail or more control. In many ways, Remember The Milk for Android is something of a strange app, particularly for a web-based service. Rather than simply complementing or replicating the options that are available at the RTM web site, the app actually makes the service easier to use. If you have signed up for a Remember The Milk account in the past but have been put off by the way in which the web site works, downloading the app will enable you to completely re-evaluate the service and see it in a new light. Many people will find it difficult to get excited about what is essentially a to-do app, but until you have tried out Remember The Milk, it is hard to understand just how much better it is when compared to other similar tools. The range of options available is simply unrivalled, and this is coupled with a delightful ease of use that actually manages to make tasks management a pleasure. You can download a free copy of the app by paying a visit to the Remember The Milk page.

From malware to hardware failure, bugs to human error, there are many potential dangers just waiting to trash your most valuable data. Which is why it's generally a very good idea to back up your system, from time to time. And while there are many possible backup software options, we've always had a personal preference for the simplicity of disk imaging tools, the latest example of which is O&O DiskImage 7 Professional. The new release certainly looks good on paper. It can back up everything from specific files and folders, to individual partitions or entire hard drives; there are multiple restoration options, enhanced this time with EFI/ UEFI support and a new boot disc; and interesting extras include the ability to convert backup images to virtual disks (VHD). But would the reality live up to the marketing? We took a closer look. Getting started DiskImage 7 Professional launches with a simple Start Page, which warns you that you've not run a backup yet, and offers an "Image now" button to help resolve the situation. Choose this option and you'll launch a Drive Image backup with the current default settings, which are also displayed for your review, and if you're happy then clicking "Start" will begin the backup process. A very quick start for PC novices. The DiskImage Start Screen points you quickly in the direction of key program functions If you need more control, though, you can also click the "Drive Imaging" option to launch a manual image backup. And selecting a drive, followed by the "Add as job" option allows you to configure more details about your image backup. There's a fairly basic scheduler, for example (this can run backups once or on defined days of the week, but not on events, like logging on); you can define the destination folder for the backup, and its file name; and there are options to run particular commands before and after the backup is complete, as well as send email notification of backup successes or failures. Unusually, though, creating a job alone doesn't define every aspect of the backup. To set it up properly you must also choose or create a "profile", where you can decide options such as its compression method, encryption settings, exclude filters (file types - *.tmp, say - you don't want in the image), imaging method, and more. At first this can seem confusing. We spent far longer than usual trying to find out where to set various settings, and this indirect approach does mean it can take a while to configure everything to suit your needs. If you prefer your backup software to stay simple, though, you'll appreciate the fact that DiskImage Professional keeps its more advanced options at a safe distance. And of course separating these settings from your backup jobs does greatly improve your flexibility. If you need to temporarily encrypt your backups to protect some work documents you're editing, say, there's no need to change every job: just switch to a profile where encryption is enabled, and in a 2 or 3 clicks you're sorted. File backups Drive image backups are great, but sometimes it's enough to just back up a few files and folders, and so it's good to know that DiskImage 7 Professional can handle that, too. The File Backup tool is a little basic The program's approach to this task is familiar and fairly basic. You've seen it before, many times: the program displays an Explorer-like tree of your files and folders, and you simply check the box next to everything you'd like to preserve. After which the process continues more or less as it does with image backups. And so you could simply launch a file backup right now, in just a couple of clicks, or use the "Add as Job" or Profile options to define scheduling, encryption, compression settings and more. All this certainly works well enough. And the files are only zipped up, too (if you've enabled compression at all), so you don't need DiskImage to restore any or all of your archives, should you need them. Any ZIP tool (or even Windows) will provide what you need. The file backup module is still a little limited, though, not really even up to the standards of the best of breed freeware, and it would definitely benefit from some extra intelligence. Some presets to help protect your Firefox profiles, Outlook Inbox or other common backup sources would be welcome, for instance. Maybe next time. Easy restore If disaster strikes at a later date than DiskImage 7 Professional offers several ways to restore your files. The program can mount your backup image as a drive, for instance. It'll appear in Explorer as a drive, just as any other, and you can freely copy files and folders from the backup to wherever you like. It's easy to restore anything from individual files to entire hard drives And you can also simply restore an entire partition or drive image from within the program. Restoring the system partition is a little more complex, of course. But DiskImage 7 has made some big steps forward in this area, in particular with its new ability to create a bootable Windows-based CD or USB flash drive of O&O DiskImage (with some other useful troubleshooting tools thrown in for good measure). If your PC won't boot for some reason, launch it from this, instead, and the program will be able to restore a system partition backup and hopefully get everything working again. And O&O also emphasise that DiskImage 7 Professional now supports EFI/UEFI, as well as BIOS systems. Some of the disk imaging competition (Macrium Reflect, for instance) remain a little ahead in this area, by for example providing the option to install a bootable recovery environment on your hard drive, which you can launch quickly and without the hassle of recovery discs. DiskImage's new ability to create recovery discs means it's really not that far behind, though, and in general the program should handle all your restoration requirements with ease. Extras If everything we've described so far still isn't quite enough, then no problem. DiskImage 7 Professional has plenty of extra features and functionality waiting to be uncovered. DiskImage comes with lots of useful bonus tools and extras The program has good virtual drive (VHD) support, for instance. It can restore drives directly from a VHD file, and there's support for converting VHDs to and from standard O&O images (OMG files). We'd like VMware and VirtualBox support, too, but this is a useful start. The program can also help you burn images to CD, DVD or Blu-ray files, as well as mount ISO files as drives. DiskImage can help you manage your backup images by merging them (you can combine incremental images into the base to effectively create an up-to-date base image). And the program includes one or two interesting, more advanced tweaks which you won't often find elsewhere. If you're rolling out a system image across multiple networked PCs, for instance, then normally you'll have immediate problems as they'll all have the same SID (Security Identifier) and computer name. But here you'll be able to use DiskImage's Change Computer Identity option to give each PC a new SID and name: very quick and easy. Thoughts O&O DiskImage 7 Professional isn't the perfect drive imaging tool, then. The way your backup settings are spread around the system can be a little confusing, at least initially; backup performance was only average in our tests (around 10% slower than Macrium Reflect); its file backup option is rather basic; and this latest release isn't exactly packed with new features. Still, you really can start your backups with the absolute minimum of clicks; once you understand the "job" and "profile" system then it's really very flexible; and even if the main addition here is really just the ability to create a bootable disc from within the program, that's still a very welcome addition which makes a major difference to the application's usability. And so, while it's not for everyone, if you're looking for an imaging tool then there are more than enough reasons here to have O&O DiskImage 7 Professional on your shortlist. And it's worth taking the trial edition for a spin, just to see how the program could suit you.

Explorer has been a part of Windows for many years and over time it has gradually changed and developed. The current versions is somewhat lacking in the toolbar buttons department, and this is something that Better Explorer aims to address. The app features a ribbon style interface that is not dissimilar to Microsoft Office and the more recent preview versions of Windows 8 and the tabbed method of working with multiple windows that has become standard practice in web browser is also present here. Should you decide that the ribbon is a little intrusive to have on display at all times – or you are working on a smaller screened laptop where space is at a premium – it can be quickly hidden when needed, but it is never far away when you need to access it. When activated, the toolbar provides access to a number of useful options including copying the path of the currently selected item and the ability to invert the current selection. The tabbed interface is a joy to work with and the  overall look of the program is impressive. It should be noted that this is currently an alpha version and it is not yet feature complete. Stability can also not be guaranteed, but even at this relatively early stage it is possible to see that this is shaping up to be an impressive tool. Whether you are yearning for little features that used to be found in Explorer or simply want to see if there is a more effective tool than Explorer, this is well worth taking a look at. You can find out more and download a free copy of the program by paying a visit to the Better Explorer review page.

If, like us, you've tried more than your share of image editors, then you'll know many of them are depressingly similar. Especially when it comes to filters. All too many developers seem to think they can get by with a simple sharpen, blur, emboss and so on, when most users now expect far, far more. Fortunately there are also plenty of image editors which manage to deliver plenty of filtering power, though - and the Java-based Pixelitor is a particularly interesting example. Its compact size (the entire program is contained within a single 1.04MB JAR file) suggested we shouldn't expect too much, but the reality proved very different - it's packed with essential filtering functionality. Click Filter > Blur/ Sharpen, for instance, and you're presented with no less than seven blur options (Gaussian, Smart, Box, Fast, Lens, Motion, Spin and Zoom). And each of these in turn can be tweaked in various ways. Choose the Lens blur, say, and you're able to set the radius, sides of the aperture, bloom factor, bloom threshold, or even enable a "high-pass sharpening" option. (And if you've no idea what a particular group of settings mean then you can always just keep clicking the handy Randomize button until the preview window shows you results you like.) It's only around 1MB in size, but Pixelitor still manages to squeeze in a host of powerful image editing tools There are some useful distortion filters, too. "Pinch, Bulge, Twirl" presents plenty of creative possibilities; "Fisheye" works well; it's easy to apply ripple or wave effects to an image, and just as with the blurs, everything is very configurable. And there are plenty of others, from quality edge detection and noise reduction, to photo collages, kaleidoscopes, fancy lighting effects and more. (If all else fails then you can always enter a custom 3x3 or 5x5 convolution of your own.) Filters are just the start, of course. Pixelitor also has a host of tools to tweak your colour, brightness and levels; you get basic paint tools with various brushes; and the program supports layers, a range of selection tools, and bonus options ranging from a batch image resizer to a simple screen capture utility. There are also a few issues here. Pixelitor doesn't have a thumbnail browser to help you locate images; it only supports a few essential formats (BMP, JPG, GIF, PNG); zooming in and out with the mouse could be easier; and the lack of documentation means this isn't a program for image editing novices. Still, the program does have plenty of powerful features, and is hard to beat for convenience: it'll run anywhere Java 6 is available. So if you're looking for a capable image editor which won't get in your way then give Pixelitor a try - we think you'll be impressed.

The Mozilla Foundation has announced the release of Firefox 4 RC1. This is a feature-complete release, and could even morph into a final release with no further changes, particularly if Mozilla is keen to steal some thunder from the imminent arrival of Internet Explorer 9, which Microsoft has just confirmed will be available from Monday. Firefox 4 will – like its rivals – be much lighter in weight than the current version (3.6), which will ensure better performance. Like Chrome and IE9, the user interface has been redesigned to maximise screen real-estate for viewing web pages. It will be available for Windows, Mac and Linux. There are no significant changes from the last release (beta 12), and it appears Mozilla has concentrated its efforts on bug-fixing plus tweaking performance and compatibility. It’s been a frustrating few months for Firefox 4, as the original planned release has been delayed a number of times as coders have struggled to lock down the code – over the course of 12 beta releases, over 7,000 fixes have been made. Early indications suggest that Internet Explorer 9 will be quicker than Firefox – a major coup for Microsoft in its attempts to regain market share. Firefox aficionados will, however, be pleased to see that version 4 is significantly quicker than its immediate predecessor. Mozilla also plans to change the development cycle going forward in order to speed up feature development - so Firefox 5, 6 and 7 are likely to be released by the end of the year. Firefox 4 RC1 is open source, and out now for Windows (Windows 2000 or later), Mac (OS X 10.5 or later) and Linux. A Windows-only portable edition is also available.
