Google Priority Inbox not good enough? Prioritize your inboxes with EmailTray

The need to prioritize emails is an idea that has been around for some time, starting with spam filtering that aimed to reduce the amount of junk reaching your inbox. Google and other email providers have made further advances by highlighting emails believe to be more important than other you receive based on content, sender and previous correspondence. EmailTray provides you with even more control by automatically filtering your mail into high priority, lower priority, no priority and spam. This is a desktop app that can be used to check as many email addresses as you want providing you are working with POP3 or IMAP accounts, but all of your email is made available in one place. The program analyzes your email message as they arrive and filter them in to inboxes of different priorities. Emails that are sent by people with whom  you regularly communicate with will be assigned a higher priority than other emails, and all of your mail is sorted into ‘Top priority’, ‘Low priority’, ‘No priority’ and Spam. EmailTray Notifications can be customized so that you are only warned about the arrival of the most important email and do not waste your time looking through unimportant messages and you can define rules of your own so that email from certain contacts or messages that include certain words are always sent to spam or prioritized as necessary. The program also checks through the spam folders of your email accounts to ensure that the spam filters of your email providers have not been too rigorous. The reduction in email notification is very welcome, and the program seems to do an excellent job of correctly determining how different emails should be dealt with. As an added bonus, EmailTray provides you with more information about anyone you receive emails from by pulling in information from their Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. The Android version of the app includes all of the features of the Windows edition of the software and is also available free of charge. Dexpot 1.6 brings interactive previews and a window catalog to your virtual desktop

Virtual desktops are a great alternative to having multiple monitors installed to gain more space to work with. Dexpot is a virtual desktop management tool and it has just been updated to include and impressive new interactive preview screen that can be used to move windows and program between desktops, and even perform more advanced options such as creating copies of windows. There’s also a portable edition of the same version of the app available Dexpot Portable. The preview window also feature support for mouse and keyboard controlled zooming, but one of the most intriguing new features is the Window catalog. This displays all of the windows that are included on a desktop as a series of tiles and if you start dragging windows around Dexpot will automatically switch to full screen preview mode. Old favorites such as the desktop manager and desktop preview have also been redesigned. Dexpot A big step forward sees the addition of support for multiple monitors. If you have two or more screens connected to your computer, you can now use Dexpot to gain even more workspace. There are advanced optoins such as the ability to exclude a particular monitor from being used by the program so you can keep content static when required. To help make virtual and real desktop easier to differentiate, you can choose to have a different background to each desktop or for the desktops of a particular monitor. In addition to all of this, there are also new keyboard shortcuts that make it easier than ever to interact with the program and access frequently used options. Fix an unbootable PC with Paragon Rescue Kit 10 Free

You turn your PC on, a BIOS message or two pops up, then Windows loads, and (eventually) the desktop appears. This happens automatically, every time, and so it's very easy to take the process for granted. What if the startup sequence didn't run quite so smoothly, though? An error message pops up at some point, maybe the boot just hangs altogether, and your desktop never appears.  Windows provides several options that might be able to help - Safe Mode, "Last Known Good", Startup Repair - but there's no guarantee that they'll fix the problem. And so it's important to equip yourself with tools that can see you through disasters like this, and get your system working again. No-one knows this better than Paragon Software. For years they've bundled a bootable recovery disc with their partition and hard drive software, so if you accidentally wipe something important then you have at least a chance of restoring normal operations. You don't have to buy one of Paragon's apps to benefit from this recovery tool, though, because its core functionality is available for free in the shape of their Rescue Kit. The company have just released version 10 of the system, and it's packed with essential disaster recovery functionality. The Boot Corrector, for instance, has options to fix all the most common startup problems: it can fix the Master Boot Record, examine the partition boot record, tweak the partition table and its parameters, correct boot settings in Windows structures (boot.ini, BCD), check for incorrect drive letters in the System Registry and more. And while this may sound complicated, it's really not - a helpful wizard walks you through the steps involved. You also get an Undelete Partition tool, which will scan your hard drive, searching for and restoring accidentally deleted partitions. And if these utilities can't get your PC back to normal, then the File Transfer Wizard will at least help to recover your most important documents. Just choose the files and folders you need, and the program will copy them to a local drive, ready for migrating to another PC. The Paragon Rescue Kit can't solve everything. If there's a hardware issue, say, or your PC is infected by malware then it's probably not going to be able to help. The Rescue Kit can fix the most common Windows and partition-related boot problems, though, and that's why you need a copy. Go download it now, and you'll be prepared if disaster strikes.

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 released to public beta

Bitdefender has released the first public beta of its Total Security 2013 suite. And while the "New Features" list this time doesn't exactly reveal much in the way of innovation (you'll probably have some across many similar ideas before), there are still some welcome additions to what's becoming a very powerful security suite. Safepay, for instance, is an isolated browser which runs in a secure desktop, with a virtual keyboard. It automatically launches when it detects you're visiting banking, payment or other sensitive sites to help ensure your transaction details stay safe. Anti-Theft is Bitdefender's take on a computer location service. If your laptop is stolen, say, you can log in to a web console, display its whereabouts on a map (maybe), then try to lock it remotely or wipe all the data it contains. The USB Immunizer aims to make your USB flash keys "immune to autorun malware". We've yet to test this - and most similar tools aren't quite as powerful as they claim - but any level of protection here is welcome. It takes a moment to discover where everything is, but then Total Security's new interface seems very easy to use If this kind of ultra-comprehensive suite always seems too complex, then you may appreciate Bitdefender's new Autopilot: essentially it's a "leave me alone" mode where the program doesn't hassle you with popups and alerts, instead managing your system entirely automatically. All of this is presented in a flashy new interface, which works well with a few exceptions (there's a desktop gadget which feels like a waste of time). And of course all this comes on top of the core features you'd expect from any security suite: on-demand and real-time antivirus protection, a spam filter, firewall, privacy tools, browsing protection, online backup, file encryption and more. Is it worth taking the trial for a spin? If you're interested in Bitdefender in particular, or this kind of do-everything suite, then we'd say yes: there are bugs and omissions, but in the main it seemed fairly stable and reliable during our tests. And by way of encouragement, Bitdefender are offering a few prizes to the beta testers who provide the most feedback. You could win an Asus B121 12.1 inch Tablet, an Acer Aspire S3 13.3 inch Ultrabook, a Nokia Lumia 900, and 100x Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 licenses for 6 months. One point to remember, though, is that Bitdefender Total Security 2013 really isn't designed to run alongside other security suites. These will generally be detected at installation, with the program refusing to proceed until your existing solution has been removed. And keep in mind also that this is a first public beta. And bugs in this kind of low-level application could have very serious effects on your system, so don't even think of installing the suite on a PC unless you have a full and recent backup available. But if that's not a problem, then grab a copy of the beta and take a look for yourself: there are 32-bit and 64-bit flavours available.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 and Internet Security 2014 betas now available

Kaspersky Lab has announced the public availability of Technical Previews for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. These are very early releases and some way from being complete, so there's little information on new features yet - but a few basic details have appeared. The interface has been updated, for instance. It's not radically different, just simplified, and even more Windows 8-like than it was before. The new releases now support touch screens, too, and our initial impressions are that the program could work well in a touch environment. Kaspersky's Safe Money (a feature which helps to secure your online transactions) now supports more banks and web stores, and allows you to choose your preferred browser. The interface has been simplified, and is more Windows 8-like than ever The company claims the new release will use less resources. And apparently it will also provide "connected standby technology support", although what level of support, and where, isn't yet clear. This doesn't look like a release which is going to win over many new customers, then, but if you're a Kaspersky fan and want to try it anyway, the process is at least fairly straightforward. There's no special beta registration, and you don't have to sign up to anything: just download the installer and you're ready to go. (Although we would recommend removing any existing Kaspersky installation, first, and running a backup if the system contains anything important.) And to find out what might happen then, we've briefly installed and tried out both programs, with mixed results. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 displayed error messages saying our system wasn't activated, for instance, while the interface said we were, while Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 noticeably cut our test PC's performance. But scanning and other features worked well, if a little slower. So on balance, not bad for an early beta, and if you're interested in Kaspersky products then you should find there's plenty here to explore.

VLC 2.0.1 FINAL tweaks interface, improves support and blitzes bugs

One month after open-source media player VLC reached its landmark 2.0 release, the VideoLAN Organization has released VLC 2.0.1 FINAL. The brand new update of this popular cross-platform media player divided opinion – particularly among Mac users – when version 2.0 shipped, and this latest release aims to fix many bugs and annoyances reported over the intervening period. Version 2.0.1 also tweaks the revamped Mac OS X user interface further, plus adds support for MxPEG files and streams as well as limited support for Blu-ray disc menus. It also improves support for multi-tracked MKV video files and removes version 2.0’s “flawed” auto-detection of ALSA audio channels. There are also a number of security updates. The most visible changes can be found on the Mac platform. Having already overhauled the user interface for VLC 2.0, version 2.0.1 tweaks things further to provide more customization options for OS X users. Watch just about any video on any platform using VLC Media Player The Qt interface can now be customized to let users replace the blue seek slider with a sleeker, native one. There are also fixes to the playlist, menus, the main toolbar and various dialogs, including add-ons, open, preferences and customization. In terms of file and disc access, there are a number of major fixes in VLC 2.0.1. CDDB information retrieval has been both fixed and improved for music CDs, and a number of unspecified fixes for both Blu-ray disc playback and HLS support (particularly on the Windows platform) and for encryption. Also fixed is DVD decryption on some RPC-1 drives. Also fixed is UDP/RTP multicast stream reception on OS X Macs using the 10.7 SDK. Other fixes include support for split RAR archives, tweaks to the web interface – adding support for .3ga and .drc file extensions while also fix mobiles display for remote control mode. In all there are over 120 bug fixes and a number of security updates. VLC 2.0.1 FINAL is an open-source, free download for Windows, OS X and Linux.
