Opera Software has released the first update for Opera 11 for Windows, Mac and Linux users. Opera 11.01 includes updated mouse gestures, plus a raft of stability and security fixes which makes it a recommended update for all Opera users. Version 11.01’s standout feature is the way it handles mouse gestures. Various issues with sensitivity and recognition have been resolved to make the new visual mouse gestures more familiar to those used to the old pre-version 11 mouse-gesture system. A brand new feature for Mac users is the ability to install a portable version of the program on to a USB stick – it’s not a simple process, but is outlined in detail on the Opera blog. Opera 11.01 sees a large number of fixes implemented. Notable bugs that have been squashed include one where clicking the same link twice crashed Opera. Another saw Opera crash when a downloaded file was opened, or when a tab was closed. There are also a number of bugs associated with installing and upgrading Opera that have been resolved, including one which saw the installer crash when launched alongside a running copy of Opera. A number of tweaks have also been implemented: gone is the close button on tabs that haven’t been selected, while it’s now possible to open the mail panel as a tab even when it’s only used for feeds. This change is accompanied by other improvements and fixes to Opera’s Mail, News and Chat sections. Rounding things off in this update are six security fixes, including one which prevents web sites gaining limited access to a user’s files. Opera 11.01 is available now for Windows, Mac and Linux users, and should be considered a critical update.
